good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this evening hurricane ian strengthened to a category 3. this dramatic image from the international space station yesterday shows just how large the hurricane is. in cuba, officials rushed to try the evacuate people in small coastal villages ahead of the storm. parts of the island could see a storm surge of 14 feet. in florida people are preparing for what is expecting to be a powerful category 4 hurricane when it hits somewhere along the state's west coast early tomorrow. in st. petersburg, people waited in long line in cars to pick up sandbags. christian benavides is in st. petersburg with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it has not made major landfall since 1921. that's over a century ago.

if it holds, those who live in this area are likely to see storm surge like never before, which is why people living in low-lying areas have already been told to get out now. up and down the west coast of florida, people are bracing for the arrival of hurricane ian. >> they say mandatory evacuation. it's time to go. >> reporter: ian has grown significantly in the last 24 hours and is expected to develop into a category 4 storm with 140-mile-an-hour winds. >> property damage in these things, it's terrible that that could happen in a storm, but we can fix that and we can help rebuild, but you've got to take care of yourself. >> reporter: it's been more than a century since a major hurricane directly hit tampa bay, but officials say there the region's luck may have run out. >> this is not a drill. be prepared for anything. >> reporter: the national hurricane center says ian's exact path is still uncertain, but even if the eye stays offshore, a 10- to 15-foot storm surge is still likely to inundate the st. petersburg

area. >> that is a tremendous amount of water. yo do not want to decide to evacuate when you see water coming under the door of your home. >> reporter: as many as 300,000 people may be forced from their homes. >> failure to plan is planning to fail. >> reporter: other residents heeded the warning to expect flooding and power outages. shortages of bottled water, generators, and gasoline are being reported across the state. >> nobody wants 100-mile-per-hour winds for eight or ten hours, you know, so you're a little bit worried. but prepared? yes. >> reporter: ian's path is still unclear, but forecasters warn it could hit the coast of florida as soon as tomorrow. ian is forecasted to reach category 4 strength in the next 48 hours before making landfall here in florida. anne-marie?

>> cristian benavides, thanks so much. for more here is carl parker from our partners at the weather channel. >> here's the latest forecast track. intensities from the hurricane center getting to 140 miles per hour tuesday evening and then 130 on wednesday morning. but importantly as it is closing in on the coast there, nearing tampa still as a major hurricane, it slows down dramatically, taking a full 24 hours to move to that next forecast point to the north of tampa. that is going to mean a prolonged period of all of the impacts, exceptionally heavy rain, storm surge drying into tampa bay and surrounding areas, over several high tide cycles and also a lot of wave action, and, of course, very strong winds as well even as the storm is starting to weaken. this could be the big one for some sections of the west coast of florida. a very vulnerable section of florida, and a lot of concern over what this storm is going to do.

back to you. >> well, that's meteorologist carl parker from our partners at the weather channel. to outer space where nasa successfully crashed a small spacecraft into a tiny asteroid to see if it could alter its course. the d.a.r.t. spacecraft slammed into the asteroid while traveling at 14,000 miles an hour. an onboard camera captured the encounter until just before the moment of impact. it's part of a test to see if we can one day nudge an asteroid out of the way before it crashes into earth. >> this asteroid was coming into the field of view for the first time. we really had no idea what to expect. we didn't really know the shape of the asteroid, but we knew we were going to hit. so i think all of us were kind of holding our breath. i'm kind of surprised none of us passed out actually. >> it will take days or weeks just how much the asteroid's path was changed. japan held a rare state funeral today for assassinated

former prime minister shine zoo abe. his widow carried an urn containing her husband's ashes. vice president kamala harris was among thousands of dignitaries and mourners. he was shot in japan while giving a campaign speech in western japan in july. the cost of the funeral was more than $11 million according to japan's government. in iran, the largest anti-government protests in years are growing. they started more than a week ago since the death of a 22-year-old woman while in the custody of the morality police. ramy inocencio spoke with her relatives. >> reporter: women raging against rigid iranian law, immediately pulling their head coverings and burning them, men joining them to announce it as oppressive. these are the biggest riots to rock iran since 2019. at least 75 people have been

killed said a human rights watchdog, that number expected to rise. these demonstrations driven by the death of 22-year-old mahsa amini. the country awaits a final coroner's report. her father said she was beaten by morality police. force enforcers of iran's strict dress code, her head covering reportedly too loose. she was tortured, according to eyewitnesses, says erfan mortezaei, mahsa's cousin. he's living in exile in iraq. she was tortured in the van and then at the police station and then hit on her head and she collapsed. this was her burial in western iran. thousands paid respects. protesters have even stoned images of the supreme leader ayatollah ali khamenei. >> if you could tell the ayatollah one thing, what would it be? the in

we could see a partial government shutdown unless congress passes a stopgap bill on friday. both sides have been pressing for a short-term measure that would keep the government operating until after the november midterm elections. one of the biggest hurdles is a proposal by west virginia senator joe manchin to speed up the permit progress says for energy projects. there was a bizarre incident at a chicago police facility, and charges could still be filed in a deadly movie set shooting. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the new york times" reports actor alec baldwin and others could face criminal charges in the shooting on the set of the movie "rust." the santa fe new mexico district attorney's office asked for additional funding from the state to cover costs if charges are brought up against four people. baldwin was holding a gun last october when it fired, killing cinematographer halyna hutchins

and wounding the director. alec said he did not pull the trigger and does not know who put live rounds in the weapon. the "chicago tribune" says a man was shot after climbing a fire escape and ended up in the middle of a s.w.a.t. training exercise. authorities say the suspect climbed five flights yesterday to infiltrate the police facility. he entered through a door that was propped open, and they say he picked up at least two guns that were lying on the table as part of the s.w.a.t. training. the guns did not contain live rounds. >> the person, the offender points those guns at officers and is fired upon and struck by one of the officers. >> the 47-year-old man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. and the "orlando sentinel" says nasa is playing it safe and rolling artemis 1 back from the
