for more news, download the cbs news app o it's wednesday, september 28th, 2022. this is the "cbs morning news." breaking overnight, hurricane ian closes in. we're seeing the first signs of damage as the storm is set to make landfall in southwest florida today. >> i think i was pretty ready when they said hurricane. yeah. i'm not a trooper. race to evacuate. residents pack up and hit the road. how many people are being urged to leave the area. cuba blackout. the island country loses power after being hit by hurricane ian leaving millions of people in dark. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green.

millions of people along florida's gulf coast are bra this morning for hurricane ian as it intensifies in the gulf of mexico. satellite images show the eye of the storm packed with lightning. ian could become a catastrophic category-four hurricane when it makes landfall along florida's west coast today. people spent the day yesterday boarding up their homes and businesses and preparing for the worst. 2.5 million people are under evacuation orders. the powerful category-three hurricane tore into western cuba yesterday packing 125 mile-per-hour winds. it knocked out power to the entire country leaving 11 million people without electricity. it also devastated some of the country's crucial tobacco farms. one tobacco farmer called it apocalyptic. cristian benavides is in tampa with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the state of florida is bracing for a powerful potentially category-four storm to make landfall here, but it's shifted

about 100 miles to the south. what does this mean? two things. one, that the tampa bay area will likely be spared the worst of this. but areas that perhaps didn't prepare as much will now be in e as ian churns toward southwestern florida, it's already showing its potential for destruction. on tuesday it ripped into western cuba killing at least two people and knocking out power to the entire country. in key west, flooding soaked the streets, snapped this palm tree in half, and pushed high waters below this home. >> this is going to likely make landfall as a category-four hurricane. there will be catastrophic flooding and life-threatening storm surge on the gulf coast region. >> reporter: exactly where ian will crash ashore remains uncertain. some 2.5 million people in the region were ordered or advised

to evacuate ahead of its florida landfall, expected for today. >> we always use the adage you can hide from the wind, but you need to run from that water. >> reporter: here in tampa and across large parts of florida people are not only preparing for flooding and winds that could reach 130 miles per hour but also for widespread power outages. officials here warn it could take crews days to reach downed lines after the storm passes. >> got a generator just in case we have the hurricane. >> get some sandbags and maybe gas cans. >> reporter: meanwhile, ian's outer bands are already to blame for spotting several suspected tornadoes that touched down in south florida, toppling small planes at this broward county airport. initially hurricane ian was slated to make landfall early tomorrow or in the overnight hours. now it is forecasted to hit as early as this afternoon. anne-marie? >> cristian benavides in tampa.

thank you so much. stay safe. we want to bring in weather producer david parkinson to talk more about ian. clearly ian's path seems to be adjusting bit by bit. what do we know about where ian is headed now? >> the important reminder is the center of the storm is not all you have to worry about. the concern we have to watch here is how big this storm has widened out. hurricane-force winds now 75 miles across. you can see the well-defined eye. it's gone through a replacement cycle which means it is likely to intensify straight up until landfall. the storm now off the shore of southwest florida. you see the rain bands starting to make their way into ft. myers and eventually up into the tampa bay area. interestingly enough, if we watch the track from the national hurricane center, it takes it up to a category four with 130 mile-per-hour winds. landfall as a category three. probably some sometime or as a category four, i should say. sometime in the afternoon or evening. look at how slowly it's moving. by 8:00 a.m. even with orlando and moving up and along the

coast and reemerges off the atlantic by thursday morning as a tropical storm. then eventually becomes a low-pressure system into the weekend. if we look at the futurecast here, watch all of this water getting pushed out of tampa bay. that is why they have less of a concern for flooding for storm surge. instead, it's on the other side by ft. myers where you're going to be seeing the worst storm surge, the worst flooding rain, though, to the west side. this is a storm about the water both coming from the sea and from the sky. >> wow. david, thank you very much. >> sure thing. ahead on "cbs mornings," we're going to be talking with barbara tripp, the tampa fire rescue chief, about storm preparations and her message to the people who are not evacuating. hurricane ian has led to the postponement of today's public hearing by the house committee investigating the january 6th capitol attack. there's no word on a new date, but it could be the final one in the panel's investigation. meantime, jury selection began yesterday in washington in one

of the most serious cases connected to the insurrection. the founder of the right-wing extremist group the oath keepers and four others face the rare civil war-era charge of seditious conspiracy. scott macfarlane has more. >> reporter: on trial in federal court in washington just steps away from the site of the january 6th attack, a group of five oath keepers including leader stewart rhodes charge wednesday seditious conspiracy for allegedly plotting to block the peaceful transfer of power, staging rifles and ammunition across the river in virginia, and helping coordinate the attack on the capitol. defense attorneys plan to argue this rhodes, who was not in the capitol, and his subordinates were preparing to act on trump's behalf waiting for him to enact the insurrection act. this congresswoman hid in the house chamber during the attack. >> this is a terrifying part of this whole puzzle is the affiliations direct courting and

affiliation between the trump white house, donald trump himself potentially, but certainly his top people and these extremist, violent extremist groups. >> reporter: according to court documents, text messages show rhodes spent months after donald trump's loss calling for action from his members. just two days after the election warning, "we aren't getting through this without a civil war." trump ally roger stone, allegedly protected by oath keepers ahead of january 6th, is under scrutiny for comment made before the election revealed in a documentary. [ bleep ] let's get to the violence. >> reporter: he's also heard arguing trump's team should declare victory before the results are fully counted. >> a key thing is to claim victory. possession is nine tenths of the law. we won. >> reporter: in a statement roger stone says the clips don't prove he had anything to do with the events of january 6th. another turn in the investigation of that day. the secret service has collected

two dozen cell phones as it probes the january 6th text messages. scott macfarlane, cbs news, the capitol. we turn to new developments in russia's war with ukraine. pro russian officials say residents of four occupied territories in ukraine voted overwhelmingly in favor of referendums to become part of russia. now the u.s. and other western nations have denounced those elections saying that they were meant to pave the way for russia to annex parts of ukraine. in a video address to the u.n. security council yesterday, ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy said russia is attempting to steal the territory of another state. meanwhile, european leaders are accusing russia of sabotaging two underwater gas pipelines in the baltic sea. video shows methane bubbles on the surface above the one and two pipelines running from russia to germany. the damage had no immediate effect on european energy supplies, but it means that the pipelines are unlikely to carry gas to europe this winter.

the father allegedly killed his estranged wife and abducted their daughter. they were spotted yesterday in a pickup truck and chased by deputies for about 45 miles before there was a shoot-out on the highway. authorities explained how the girl was shot. >> the suspect vehicle comes to rest at which time a subject exits the passenger side of the vehicle wearing tactical gear and runs toward sheriff's deputies and during the gunfire goes down. >> the deputies said they did not initially realize it was the girl running toward them. investigators did not say whether she was shot by deputies or her father. rescuers in nepal are searching for a missing extreme skier from colorado. 49-year-old hillary nelson disappeared monday. she apparently fell into a crevasse while skiing down the summit of mt. manislew, the world's eighth highest mountain. the expedition organizer said she was with her partner, fellow
