>> stories of survival. families reunite after riding out the storm. we go in one home where the water was almost chest-high. captioning funded by cbs chest-hie. well, good morning and good well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. hurricane ian is expected to make landfall again today, this time in south carolina. the category 1 storm is currently offshore, and it could bring up to 12 inches of rain to the state. wind speeds are estimated at 85 miles an hour. a hurricane warning has been issued for coastal areas along south carolina and north carolina. storm surges could reach 5 feet. more on that in a few minutes, but we're going to start in florida where governor ron desantis called ian a 500-year flood event, and president biden said it could end up being the worst storm in history. christian benavides is in kissimmee, florida. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this is a retirement community in orlando where over 100 people

had to be rescued. in fact, we were here as the national guard brought out a couple of residents being tied down in southwest florida. we're now getting a sense of the destruction. near fort myers, search and rescue teams brought residents of sanibel and captiva to safety and scoured barrier islands for signs of life. >> people were surprised how quickly this storm turned and ended up being trapped. >> reporter: hurricane ian ripped apart parts of the sanibel causeway, cutting access by land. across florida the destruction can be seen from the air for miles around. at the storm's peak, naples fire and rescue had to break the window of this car to pull a woman to safety. throughout much of the state, people are assessing their losses and counting their blessings. >> i'm trying to be brave. >> reporter: after ian made landfall as a category 4 hurricane wednesday with sustained winds of 150 miles per hour, it tore apart this fort myers trailer park.

>> i literally watched my house disappear with everything in it. >> reporter: in this central florida retirement community yesterday afternoon, airboats with rescue crews were a welcome sight. >> i didn't realize we had a storm until they told me. i was sleeping. >> reporter: here in kissimmee, near orlando, the city has implemented a mandatory curfew from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. because of major flooding. the county says ian drooped more than a foot of rain. >> we're going to do our best to build florida back as quickly as possible. we're not going to be leaving. >> reporter: at fema headquarters in washington, president biden said as soon as conditions allow, he will visit florida and puerto rico, which was ravaged by hurricane fiona just days ago. governor ron desantis says for the hardest hit communities this is going to be a years-long recovery. meantime there are still 2 million customers, over 2 million customers without power

here in the state of florida. anne-marie? >> wow. cristian benavides in kissimmee. thank you, cristian. stories of survival and reunions are playing out. cbs news anchor nancy o'donnell went inside one damaged home in fort myers. the family showed our crew just how high the water got. at one point the husband and wife did not think they would make it. >> so are you guys standing in the water up this high last night? >> yeah. we got up on the counter at first. and then i told my husband, i said, you know, i think we're going to drown. >> later in the day the parents reunited with their daughter who had feared the worst. 911 operators were overwhelmed with calls for help from stranded people during the storm, but in one case, everyone or rather in some cases, everyday citizens jumped into action. here's omar villafranca. >> don't ever leave me again. >> reporter: an emotional moment

amidst a ruin. kim silva reunited with her family after riding out her first hurricane alone. >> what's that moment like when you finally see them and everybody knows you're okay? >> you just start crying. >> reporter: after ian flooded her north port home, michelle robinson waded through waist-high water with her bulldog daisy, riding a kayak looking for dry land. >> we slept on the island in the kitchen. up top? >> yeah, all night. >> reporter: neighbors helped neighbors salvage what the storm didn't destroy, but the things saved were not as important as the lives saved. rescue and recovery scenes played out across florida's west coast. at the storm's peak, flash floods caught many off guard. naples fire and rescue had to break the window to this car to pull a woman to safety. in charlotte county, two heavy construction cranes at this

building site were toppled, and scaffolding smashed into the building, a testament to the storm's powerful winds. >> this is fawcett icu. we've had major structural collapse and major flooding. >> reporter: and health care workers at port charlotte were forced to move vulnerable patients, some of them on ventilators. part of the roof was torn off. this is the kind of damage that 124-mile-per-hour winds can cause. the storm just toppled this gas station, and right behind it, the winds knocked out the windows to this building all the way up to the fifth floor. cleanup here could take weeks. omar villafranca, cbs news, port charlotte, florida. well, ian is now headed toward the carolinas and georgia, threatening millions of people there. officials have warned that the darker is far from over. michael george is south of charleston with more. michael, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning.

we're on the south carolina coast line. where we are, we're feeling the wind pick up in intensity hour by hour. ian is on the way. it's expected to make landfall right here where we are as a category 1 hurricane around midday, and it's getting stronger. right now the wind speeds are at 85 miles per hour. seeing the damage ian has already done, residents just north of florida are doing their best to prepare as the storm heads their way. >> it's going to be blowing strong winds, and it's going to be all over the state at different levels. >> reporter: the national hurricane center warns ian could produce life-threatening flooding, storm surge, and strong winds from georgia up through south carolina. >> this storm can still be dangerous and even deadly. heavy rains up to 7 inches in some areas are likely to bring flooding. landslides are a threat in our mountains, and there's a chance of tornados statewide. >> reporter: in bryan county,

georgia, conditions on the water started getting rough midday yesterday. the coast guard helped rescue a man in the okeechobee river as he was trying to secure his jet ski when he got pulled out to sea. >> you see the waters out here. you need to stay off of it. >> reporter: the southeast coast of south carolina is expected to take a direct hit. this is a region known as low country, filled with salt marshes, waterways, and beaches, areas already prone to flooding. thstsurgre could be particularly devastating. lisa sanez and her two sons fled to the charleston area from their home in tampa. they were trying unsuccessfully to steer clear of ian. >> my sister, actually she brought us out here to get away from the storm, so -- >> and now it's headed the way. >> it's headed this way. i don't know. we're going to hunker down here. we are storm chasers. >> unintentionally. >> unintentionally. >> reporter: forecasters do expect ian to rapidly weaken starting later today as it moves

"the new york times" says russian president vladimir putin plans to announce today the annexation of four provinces in ukraine. he's expected to deliver a speech that some 40,000 square miles of eastern and southern ukraine will become part of russia. it's likely he will downplay military struggles and rising opposition to his partial military mobilization. top u.n. officials are condemning the move. >> any decision by russia to go forward will further jeopardize the prospects for peace. it can prolong the dramatic impacts on the global economy. >> voting was recently held in four ukrainian provinces that are controlled by russia. the west has called the referendum a sham. reports that ginni thomas, the wife of supreme court justice clarence thomas, spoke with the house committee investigating the capitol riot. the committee chairman said ginny chairman stood by her claim that the 2020 election was stolen. her arguments came during a closed door five-hour meeting yesterday. she had been in contact with white house officials and lawmakers in arizona and wisconsin after the election. her attorneys said thomas appeared before the panel to clear up misconceptions about her activities related to the 2020 election. and the "associated press" reports britain's royal mint unveiled the new coin of king charles iii. it was created by a british sculptor. it was personally reviewed by king charles. in keeping with tradition, the king's portrait faces to the left, the opposite of queen elizabeth, his mother who died earlier this month.
