well, good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin in florida where people are beginning the long road to recovery after destruction of hurricane ian. president biden will tour the damage on wednesday. at least 86 deaths have been reported so far in florida and north carolina. more than 600,000 homes still remain without power. rescue efforts are still underway. the department of defense posted this video on social media showing people airlifted to safety after being stranded on sanibel island. emergency officials say more than 1,600 people have been rescued statewide since the storm hit. we have more from ft. myers, one of the hardest hit areas. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. the search and rescue continues in southwest florida where some streets still look like this -- lined with boats that washed ashore following the storm.

hurricane ian carved a deadly path of destruction across florida in only a few hours, but the ongoing rescue and recovery will take time and resources. >> we are continuing the first priority which is saving as many lives as possible. >> such a big storm, brought so much water that you're having basically what's been a 500-year flood event. >> reporter: in some parts of florida, flooding is getting worse. the st. john's river in seminole county keeps rising. those nearby need boats to get to their homes. >> we're at the deep end. so i think these first three houses, four houses are all flooded. the rest are just getting flooded. >> reporter: on sanibel these volunteers brought residents of the hard-hit west coast barrier island to safety. >> it came up about four feet in the house. so i've been living upstairs. >> reporter: here in the ft. myers area the damage is so bad local elected leaders have used the words like catastrophic and life changing to describe the devastation.

this is one stretch of it, lined with boats washed ashore by storm surge. lee county officials, meantime, continue to defend the timing of their evacuation orders less than 24 hours before ian made landfall. >> warnings for hurricane season start in june, and so there's a degree of personal responsibility here. i think the county acted appropriately. the thing is that a certain percentage of people will not heed the warnings regardless. >> reporter: as a new week begins, more than half a million floridians remain without power. while dozens have been confirmed dead, access to the barrier islands remains limited, so that number certainly could rise. meantime, officials believe that on sanibel, some 200 households statewde decided to ride out the storm despite being told to leave. anne-marie?

>> very risky. reporting from ft. myers beach, thank you. the new term of the u.s. supreme court begins today. the nine justices will hear arguments on issues including race, voting, and the environment. the newest member of the high court is justice ketanji brown jackson, the court's first black woman. in her first case today, the justices are being asked to limit the reach of the clean water act, the main law to combat water pollution. there's an $85,000 reward to find the suspect or suspects in the deadly shootings of five people in stockton, california. detectives released an image of a person who they call a person of interest dressed in all black and wearing a black cap. they believe the murders started in july and that they are all connected. each victim was walking alone when they were killed. four of them were hispanic, and one was white. >> i'd be scared especially if it was -- especially like toward a specific race or specific person or like a specific family.

i'd be definitely scared. >> thinking about moving out of here to be honest. it ain't safe out here at all. >> a town hall meeting is scheduled for wednesday for the community to voice their concerns. the heads of nine nato members have backed a path to membership for ukraine to join the western alliance. it comes on the heels of another major victory for ukrainian forces. charlie d'agata has the story. >> reporter: a day after ukrainian forces swept into the key town of lyman in eastern ukraine, president volodymer zelenskyy announced in a video address lyman is cleared fully, thank you to our militaries, our warriors. he vowed that the warriors would recapture more territory in the coming days, saying there will be more ukrainian flags flying in donbas this week. the same region president putin laid claim to on friday in his illegal annexation of four

territories in ukraine. yet, since that moment, he's only given up more ground. russia's ministry of defense forced to concede its troops withdrew from lyman in order to avoid being surrounded. it has served as an important logistics hub for russian troops who have held onto it for months. u.s. defense secretary austin lloyd calling it a significant loss. >> we sit astride the supply lines of the russians. this presents a dilemma for the russians going forward. >> reporter: but as russian troops reposition, the defense ministry released this video claiming to show multiple rocket launchers firing on the battlefield and these images parading well-equipped new recruits running drills before they're sent to fight on the front lines to defend the region putin now calls his own against ukrainian forces determined to claw every inch of it back.

we're among the last to visit the town of lyman just days before it fell to the russians in the spring. recapturing it is a major victory. as far as putin's concerned, that's now an attack on russian soil. charlie d'agata, cbs news, ukraine. the soccer club in indonesia apologized this morning to victims of a deadly stadium stampede. its president said that he's ready to take full responsibility after at least 125 people died. hundreds attended a candlelight vigil in the capital last night. they sang and held signs advocating against police brutality. it occurred after a game saturday night. fans of the losing team rushed the field. police chased them with batons and fired teargas in an effort to control the crowd. most of the victims were trampled or suffocated. the home team has been suspended from hosting soccer matches for the remainder of the season. and secretary of state antony blinken heads to latin

oscars in 1973 has died. sacheen littlefeather died yesterday at her home in california. she became the first native woman to speak on stage at the oscars. she was booed and mocked by some members of the audience after she explained that brando couldn't accept the award due to hollywood's portrayal of native americans. in august she received a formal apology from the academy. sacheen littlefeather was 75 years old. a helicopter crash was caught on video, and a death at football stadium is now under investigation. those are some of the headlines. "usa today" reports a fan died after falling from an escalator at the stadium in pittsburgh. officials responded to the stadium after the jets-steelers game ended yesterday. the man was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries. an investigation is underway to determine what happened. the "fresno bee" said a helicopter crashed into a home injuring two on board.

it was captured on a home security camera, clipped the edge of the house and hit a tree before going down. the 47-year-old pilot and 33-year-old passenger had minor injuries. they were both conscious and walking around when police arrived. no one on the ground was hurt. one neighbor described what she saw. >> yeah, they started spinning, and they hit the palm tree. and then -- until they fell on the floor. i called 911. >> the ntsb will investigate. and the the -- the "associated press" said king chals will not attend a climate meeting next month. there was speculation that he would attend before queen elizabeth died. under rules that govern britain's constitutional monarchy, the king is barred from interfering in politics. charles attended last year's climate summit in scotland when he was prince of wales. still to come, a killer
