this morning search and rescue operations continue in florida. cbs news has confirmed 100 related dths. the majority of deaths are in florida. more than 440,000 homes and businesses are still without power in florida. authorities say most of it should be restored by sunday. people lined up for food, water, and ice days after the catastrophic hurricane as one sheriff defends a late evacuation notice. cristian benavides is in fort myers with the latest on all of this. christian, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the mayor here of fort myers beach tells cbs news he believes there are still about two dozen people unaccounted for, but that doesn't include some of barrier islands like captiva where search and rescue still can't go in by land. across parts of florida, people sifted through the personal belongings that made it through the destruction ian left behind. >> we really don't want to leave

because this is all we have left. >> reporter: cars lined up for bottled water as the hurricane's far-reaching impact stretches into a second week. >> we finally got water last night. but it's yucky water. >> reporter: in tampa, hundreds of volunteers from a disaster response team cook and serve meals for those in need. >> we've seen the devastation, and the only way this happens where people can make a difference is when we all work together. >> reporter: as the death toll rises, providing aid is a door-to-door effort. >> fire and rescue. >> we have four ambulances here, and we have two rescues here. >> reporter: here in hard-hit lee county, the sheriff defended the response amid the mounting criticism over the decision not to issue an evacuation order until tuesday, the day before hurricane ian made landfall. >> we got that message out at

fiona. it knocked out power and created landslides. it came while puerto rico was still recovering five years after hurricane maria hit. >> the people of puerto rico keep getting back up with resilience and determination. quite frankly, it's pretty extraordinary when you look at it from afar, and you deserve every bit of help your country can give you. >> the damage in puerto rico from hurricane fiona is estimated to be at least $3 billion. secretary of state antony blinken strongly condemned north korea firing a ballistic missile over japan, the first in five years. this prompted japan to issue a warning for residents to take cover and temporarily suspend trains in northern japan. japan said the missile was believed to have landed in the pacific ocean this. was north korea's fifth missile launch in the last ten days. it's an apparent response to joint military drills between the u.s. and south korea.

and a scathing new report is detailing systemic abuse within the women's professional soccer lead. they found sexual misconduct, verbal abuse is rampant throughout women's soccer. nikki battiste reports. >> reporter: it was detailed publicly how they were ignored and overlooked in favor of keeps coaches and owners in jobs. >> the sexual misconduct varies here from really inappropriate misogynistic-type comments to unwanted sexual advances to actual coercion by coaches. >> reporter: former u.s. depueralty te asttoryne led the probe. the report says abuse of coaches moved from team to team, those in a position to correct the record stayed silent. >> in a circumstance like this under the national women's soccer league, is there such a thing as a consensual sexual relationship?

>> not between a player and a coach. there is such a power differential in that relationship, it is, by definition, not consensual. >> reporter: last season, five of the ten head coaches in the national women's soccer league either were fired or stepped down amid allegations of sexual misconduct. sexual misconduct accusations against coach paul riley ignited protests among the players who last year paused games for moments of silence. sinead farrelly is one of the players who spoke out against riley. >> soccer for me was my safe space in my world and something that i had such an innocent pure love for since i was a little girl, and that was taken from me. >> reporter: previously unreported incidents between former coach christy holly and a player described how he invited her to watch game footage and instead showed her pornography and touched her inappropriately. >> that was nikki battiste reporting. the u.s. soccer president called the report heartbreaking and promised action including

creating an office to handle allegations of misconduct and enforcing background checks on all u.s. soccer staff. well, the u.s. is sending ukraine four more advanced rocket systems. that's according to american officials. that's part of a new $4.6 million aid package that's expected to be announced today. it brings the total number delivered by the u.s. to 20. the systems have played an important role in helping ukraine's military make inroads in russian-controlled areas. meanwhile a russian court has set an october 25th court date to hear brittney griner's appeal for her nine-year prison sentence for her drug possession. the wnba star was convicted after russian police said that they founder vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at a moscow airport in february. she testified that she packed the canisters by mistake. the biden administration has proposed a prisoner swap with russia to bring griner and fellow american paul whee lan home.

iran supreme leader made his first public comments since protests broke out following the death of a woman in the custody of the country's morality police. ayatollah ali khamenei said he was deeply heartbroken by the woman's death last month and he cracked down on security forces and accuses the u.s. and israel for being behind the demonstrations. more than 130 people have died in the protests. that's according to fines rules.

kim kardashian is fined for breaking crypto promotion rules, and russia is searching for a woman who staged a bold tv protest. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the washington post" says a russian journalist who protested the war in ukraine on state television escaped from her pretrial house arrest. russian officials say the woman fled with her 11-year-old daughter. she was placed on moscow's wanted list yesterday. in march she held up a soon on air that read "stop the war" and "they're lying you." she faces up to ten years in prison if convicted for spreading fake news about the russian military. "the new york times" reports bomb parts were found in a hotel where a father was shot while visiting his son at a nearby college. he was in town for a family weekend at marist college. two men were arrested in connection with the kill. police say they found bomb-making materials and books with instructions on creating explosives in a room booked by the suspects.

of fraud or scams. the company that operated zelle said previously that 99.9% of tractions occurred without these complaints. >> london's heathrow airport will end its cap on the daily number of passenger departures it allows starting october 29th. it had capped the number to limit long lines, baggage, and cancellations as airports struggled to cope with the rebound in travel demand after covid lockdowns were lifted. airport staffing shortages that affected check-ins and baggage have improved since the summer heathrow set. and blame inflation for what's expected to be higher prices for christmas trees this year. tree farm operating costs including everything from labor and materials to shipping are all up. just how much more will the holiday cheer cost? an industry survey suggests a wholesale price hike of as much as 20% compared to last year. but the good news is the harvest looks good, and farms say they don't expect any shortages. that's your "cbs moneywatch"

to becoming one of u2's biggest fans and becoming an activist. he will visit 14 cities for what is being billed as an evening of words and music and some mischief. there was a surprise for a middle schooler in southern california. a reserve officer was called in when a coyote was found hiding in a bathroom stall. the animal had been spotted several times in recent weeks but never on the school grounds until yesterday. the officer successfully lassoed the coyote and released it in a rural area. and good grief, charlie brown, there's a new great pumpkin. a pumpkin in upstate new york weighed in at 2,554 pounds. that sets a new u.s. record for the heaviest pumpkin. it will be on display at the great pumpkin farm fall festival.
