caused by hurricane ian. he'll meet with one of his top critics, florida governor ron desantis. but they're expected to focus on victims and recovery and not politics. rescuers are still continuing their search for hurricane survivors, though. at least 108 deaths have been reported. officials believe the number will continue to go up. more than 300,000 homes and businesses remain without power. some neighborhoods are still flooded one week after the storm hit. astrid martinez has the latest. >> reporter: the white house says when president biden visits ft. myers, florida, this morning to survey the destruction and meet with first responders and local residents, politics will not play a role. that includes during a planned meeting with governor ron desantis, one of the president's most prominent republican critics. >> they're going to talk about what -- what else are the needs in florida to get to a place of recovery, to get to a place of rebuilding. >> reporter: ian's floodwaters

are receding, but in some areas the recovery effort is just getting under way. >> there's more urban search and rescue capability in florida >> reporter: a week after the category-four hurricane first made landfall in the u.s., rescue teams continued to go door to door in search of both victims and survivors. >> we want to get to those that have run out of medication. those who may be trapped in their homes because of the debris, try to get them out or check on their wellbeing. >> reporter: the extent of the damage is still being assessed, especially in coastal communities that took a direct hit from ian. >> manufactured homes ripped to shreds. >> reporter: hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses remain without power. getting the lights back on is a priority, but officials say the task could take a month or more to complete. astrid martinez, cbs news, new york. breaking overnight, a

missile test went wrong in south korea during a joint exercise with the u.s. causing panic among some residents. military forces conducted drills this morning sending a number of missiles into the sea. one missile failed shortly after launch, blowing up as it crashed into the ground. no injuries were reported. south korea's military apologized for causing panic in the area and vowed to investigate what happened. the joint exercise is in response to north korea after it test fired a ballistic missile, sending it over japan for the first time since 2017. it traveled more than 2,800 miles prompting a warning for residents in japan to take cover. white house officials call the test dangerous and reckless. >> the launch was a danger to the japanese people, destabilizing to the region, and a clear violation of the united nations security council resolution. >> north korea has reportedly fired nearly 40 ballistic missiles so far this year. the fight over documents seized from mar-a-lago may end

up at the supreme court. former president trump has asked the high court to step into the ongoing legal fight. he wants them to overturn a lower ruling that allows the justice department to continue to review the classified material. it's currently investigating trump's handling of highly sensitive documents. lawyers for the doj have until next tuesday to respond to trump's request. and this morning, republicans are rallying around herschel walker, the senate gop candidate for georgia. the former nfl star who supports a national abortion ban denied a report that he paid for a girlfriend's abortion in 2009. robert costa has more. donehe gets on twitter, he lies everything has been a lie. >> reporter: christian walker, the son of georgia's herschel walker, blasted his father after

"the daily beast" reported the senate candidate who opposes abortion rights allegedly paid for a girlfriend's abortion in 2009. the unidentified woman supported her claim with a $575 receipt from an abortion clinic and a signed $700 personal check from walker to cover expenses. she told "the daily beast" she came forward because of walker's stance on abortion, saying, "i just can't with the hypocrisy anymore. we all deserve better." walker who prayed with supporters at an atlanta event has denied the allegations. >> i never asked anyone to get an abortion. i never paid for an abortion, and it's a lie. i send money to a lot of people. >> walker's son, a conservative tiktok influencer, posted several times since the story broke denouncing his further's -- his father's campaign. >> he has four kids, four different women. wasn't in the house raising one of them. he was out having sex with other women. do you care about family values? >> reporter: the coming days could be critical for the

embattled republican who trails incumbent democratic senator raphael warnock by just two points. >> i think the campaign is in turmoil. they were caught offguard. what they do in the next 48 hours will make or break it. >> reporter: voters we spoke to said the bombshell allegation might not have much of an impact. >> he has told untruths enough that what is one more untruth. >> reporter: do you believe georgia republicans will stand with herschel walker regardless of these allegations? >> i think so. >> reporter: senate republican leaders stood by walker, underscoring how important this race is to winning the senate majority. but this all comes as several senate republican candidates are facing headwinds in key battlegrounds across the nation just over a month before the midterms. robert costa, cbs news, atlanta. police in stockton, california, say a potential serial killer appears to be on a mission.

six men were killed and one woman wounded in shootings dating back to last year. video was released of a person of interest. they appear on video at several of the crime scenes, but no evidence directly links them to the shootings. since april of 2021 there have been shootings linked by ballistic evidence. there's a $125,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. overnight, russian president vladimir putin signed laws to annex four ukrainian regions. the parliament ratified treats to absorb the territories. they held a voter referendum last month, but the west called it a sham. meantime, a breakthrough on the battleground in ukraine. the armed forces released a video of soldiers in a recaptured territory in the kherson region. president volodymer zelenskyy said his country's military has made advances against russian forces in the south and the east.

would you take a look at this? the fall foliage season is definitely under way in minneapolis. colorful trees, red, yellow, and green, they line the mississippi river, a sign of things to come for others across the nation. it is beautiful, though. with the fall season under way, that means flu season is also here. the cdc is warning that it could be a very rough winter. the health agency is urging everyone 6 months and older to get their flu shot. in a recent national survey, only 49% of adults say that they plan to get the vaccine. cdc director rochelle walensky addressed the low numbers at a conference yesterday. >> over the past two years, we've seen some worrisome drops in flu vaccination coverage, especially in some groups of people who are at the highest risk of developing serious flu illness. >> australia, which experiences winter ahead of the u.s., just
