to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with a tragic turn in the search for a california family kidnapped at gunpoint. the bodies of a baby girl, her parents, and uncle have been found. police say a farm worker made the discovery in a remote orchard in merced county, just outside of the bay area. the victims went missing on monday after they were taken from their trucking business in central california. surveillance video released yesterday afternoon showed a gunman leading the family out of the office. authorities believe it was a random attack and a financially motivated crime. >> there's just no words right now to describe the anger i feel and the senselessness of this incident. i said it earlier, there's a special place in hell for this guy, and i mean it. >> investigators say the suspect, 48-year-old jesus salgado, is currently in the hospital after he tried to die by suicide when he was approached by police on tuesday.

he was previously sentenced to 11 years in prison on first-degree robbery charges. also breaking overnight, a federal appeals court ruled that the obama-era daca policy is unlawful. the program prevents the deportation of nearly 600,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the u.s. as children. a panel of three judges said current enrollees will maintain their status, but new applications will continue to be blocked. the case goes back to a lower court for review to consider revisions made in august. president obama said the ruling was disappointing and called on congress to make the policy permanent. the death toll from hurricane ian has jumped to 122 people. the vast majority in florida. president biden toured the storm damage yesterday along the state's west coast. he met with survivors and local businesses owners while getting an update on search and rescue missions. he also praised governor ron desantis for storm response efforts as both men put politics aside for the day.

bradley blackburn is new york with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: hey, anne-marie. the president and the governor had spoken on the phone several times to coordinate recovery efforts following ian, but this was a rare moment when they met face to face. there was plenty to take in on that tour of the damage, and recovery will take time and cooperation from all sides. putting their political differences aside, president joe biden and florida governor ron desantis vowed to help florida in the aftermath of hurricane ian. >> today we have one job and only one job, and that's to make sure the people of florida get everything that they need to fully, thoroughly recover. >> i'm thankful that everyone's banded together. we've got a lot of work to do here. >> reporter: after surveying the destruction from the air, mr. biden coupled what he saw with the extreme wildfires and drought out west. >> i think the one thing this has finally ended is the discussion about whether or not there's climate change and we should do something about it. >> reporter: officials say the hardest hit areas could take months or years to recover,

though governor desantis announced a temporary bridge to isolated pine island has been constructed ahead of schedule. on sanibel island, accessible by a single bridge that was destroyed, residents were brought back by boat for the first time to survey the damage just for the day. >> this is such a peaceful place. a beautiful place. it's completely destroyed. >> reporter: on devastated ft. myers beach, rescue teams are checking homes for signs of people who need help. >> we want to get to those that have run out of medication. those who may be trapped in their homes because of the debris. trying to get them out or check on their wellbeing. >> reporter: across florida, many residents still lack access to clean running water, and more than 200,000 utility customers remain without power. federal officials are still assessing the damage from ian, but yesterday the fema administrator said rebuilding cost will be in the billions of dollars, and potentially one of the costliest natural disasters the nation has seen in many

years. >> it is tough. bradley blackburn in new york. thank you. well, after hitting record highs earlier this year, gas prices are expected to rise once again. opec-plus, which is led by saudi arabia, announced that it would cut oil production by two million barrels a day starting in november. that is the biggest reduction since the start of the pandemic. the biden administration criticized the decision calling it shortsighted. the move will likely lead to a jump in gas prices which currently stands at $3.86 a gallon nationwide. there's a new development after the deadly shooting on the movie set of "rust." a surprise settlement was reached in a wrongful death civil suit that will allow filming to resume. alex baldwin, who's part of the investigation, may not be cleared just yet. jonathan vigliotti explains. >> reporter: a shocking outcome even for hollywood. action on the new mexico set of "rust" will resume this january with actor alex baldwin even though he's still under investigation in the shooting

death of cinematographer halnya hutchins. baldwin was holding the gun when it went off. her husband now will work with baldwin as one of the film's executive producers. how unusual is this? >> this is highly unusual. as is almost everything about this case. >> reporter: it's a turnaround for matthew hutchins whose attorney earlier blamed production. >> had they not been reckless, somebody doesn't get shot on a movie set. >> reporter: hutch ipts said, "i have no interest some engage flooding recriminations or attributing to blame," saying the film will pay tribute to halyna's final work. baldwin acknowledging the specific desire to do what is best for her son. halnya hutchins was killed last october by a live round fired from the prop gun baldwin was holding. baldwin publicly claimed he did not fire the weapon. >> i didn't pull the trigger. >> reporter: fbi investigators determined the gun couldn't be fired without pulling the trigger. it's unclear how the civil settlement will affect a potential criminal case.

>> it's going to be very hard i think for the santa fe d.a. to move forward with criminal charges against alex baldwin and the producers of "rust" when the man who lost his wife has agreed to participate in this. >> that was jonathan vigliotti reporting. so four people face possible criminal charges including baldwin. yesterday the district attorney said no one is above the law as they follow the facts and evidence. now to an exclusive. cherelle griner, wife of wnba star brittney griner who's detained in russia, spoke with "cbs mornings" co-host gayle king about the upcoming appeal hearing on october 25th. griner is fighting her nine-year sentence on drug possession charges. >> what could happen to brittney in two weeks? >> in my brain, please in two weeks have figured this out. but the reality of the situation is that once that hearing is held and the order is finalized, bg's now in the position where

those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the washington post" reports that vice president kamala harris was in a car accident monday morning. the motorcade she was in got into a one-car accident on a closed roadway in washington, d.c. the secret service agent driving harris reportedly struck a curb, and the tire had to be replaced. harris, who was not hurt, was transferred to another vehicle. the secret service initially called the accident a mechanical failure without giving key details of the crash to senior leadership. the "orlando sentinel" says nasa and spacex launched four people to the international space station. [ cheers ] the spacecraft is carrying three astronauts from the u.s. and japan and a russian cosmonaut. the launch comes with strained relations between the u.s. and russia over the war in ukraine, but before the launch crew members said that it has not

alright, i'm out. pet prescriptions delivered to your door. chewy. here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ no jury needed. a law school in boston was guilty of committing an embarrassing error. the northeastern university school of law accidentally sent out acceptance emails to thousands of former and current applicants, but some included prospective students who have applied for admissions starting next fall. in a statement, the school blamed a technical error on the glitch. the affected students were notified of the mistake. final admission decisions will not be made until later on in the academic year. one baseball fan may have caught the deal of a lifetime. cory youmans is the lucky person

who grabbed aaron judge's a.l. season record 62nd home run tuesday night. he caught the ball. now he's being offered major league money to turn it over. memory lane, a sports auction house, says it will pay him $2 million for that ball. he has reportedly not replied. there's no word on what he plans to do with the historic souvenir. and you can now shop at goodwill from the comfort of your own home. four women have been chosen for an unusual in antarctica. dan lieberman has those stories and more in the cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: u.s. stocks fell slightly wednesday following a two-day rally as fresh economic data revealed continued strength in the job market. the dow fell 42. the nasdaq was down 27. and the s&p 500 dropped seven points. blaming rising manufacturing costs and increased demand in electric vehicles, ford motor is raising the price of its electric f-150 pickup truck by $5,000.

that's an 11% increase from the prev other brands including rivian, gm, and tesla have raised their prices, too, citing higher prices for metal and battery components. goodwill thrift store shoppers will be able to do some of their shopping online. goodwill that operates more than 3,000 stores in the u.s. and canada has an e-commerce platform for the first time offering used clothes and home goods with over 100,000 items already on the secondhand site. and the world's southernmost post office is reopening in antarctica after being closed since the pandemic began. the port locke post office and gift shop chose four women out of 4,000 applicants to run the shop. they'll have to travel 9,000 miles to get to work. they'll spend five months there and also count penguins in an effort to monitor and protect the birds. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this thursday morning.

federal authorities say they made the largest seizure ever of the drug fentanyl in new york city history. the drugs were inside a lego box. a new jersey woman was arrested last month for allegedly hiding 15,000 rainbow-colored pills in the toy box as part of a drug trafficking operation. fentanyl is involved in more than 80% of overdose deaths in new york city. and the world's oldest dog, according to the guinness world records died monday just a few months shy of her 23rd birthday. her owner says the key to longevity was being showered with tons of love and attention. she said that pebbles will be remembered for her love of country music and summertime. and when hurricane ian barrelled through florida last week, one family welcomed a tiny new member. george benty marh was born at ten pounds and six ounces hours before ian made landfall.
