it has detained eight people in connection with saturday's explosion that damaged a key bridge connecting russia to its annexed territory of crimea. russian officials say that five russians, three citizens of ukraine and armenia are in custody over the explosion. moscow also claims the blast was organized by ukraine. meanwhile, in an interview with cnn, president biden called russian president vladimir putin a rational actor who miscalculated his ability to invade ukraine. astrid martinez is here in new york with the latest on all of that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. president biden and other world leaders condemned russia's increasing aggression and are warning vladimir putin not to escalate his war. meanwhile, ukrainians are being asked to conserve energy and to stock up on water after two straight days of heavy bombardment across their country. days after president biden warned of armageddon at a democratic fundraiser, he said on cnn he does not think russian president vladimir putin will

use a new nuclear weapon. >> he, in fact, cannot continue with impunity to talk about the use of a tactical nuclear weapon as if that's a rational thing to do. the mistakes get made. the miscalculation could occur. >> reporter: the president believes putin miscalculated his invasion of ukraine significantly. >> i think he thought he was going to be welcomed with open arms, that this was -- this has been a home of mother russia in kyiv and he was going to be welcomed. i think he just totally miscalculated. >> reporter: the interview aired hours after mr. biden and other group seven leaders held a virtual meeting on ukraine. it was followed by a lengthy statement warning any use of chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons by russia would be met with severe consequences. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy addressed the g7 leaders. he called for a new wave of accountability for russia and asked for more advanced air defense systems.

he says more than 100 russian missiles have been fired at his country since monday. ukraine received the first of four promised air defense systems from germany tuesday. the u.s. says it's also working to speed up the delivery of its advanced air defense systems. and during that same interview with cnn, president biden also said he has no intention of meeting with putin next month when the two are expected to attend the group of 20 summit in indonesia. mr. biden, though, did say he'd talk to the russian leader about releasing wnba star brittney griner who has been in prison since february on drug charges in russia. anne-marie? >> all right. astrid martinez in new york, thank you so much. john fetterman, the democratic senate candidate in pennsylvania, gave his first in-person sit-down interview since suffering a stroke in may. he talked with nbc news about his health struggles and recovery. fetterman used closed caption, something his campaign says he's

previously done to avoid missing words. >> i always thought i was pretty empathetic, i think i was -- excusy, empathetic, you know, that's an example of the stroke, empathetic. i thought i was very empathetic before having a stroke. after having that stroke, i -- i understand much more the kind of the challenges that americans have day in and day out. >> fetterman's campaign said that he is healthy but has a lingering auditory processing issue that they say is expected to go away. the latest cbs news battleground tracker poll has fetterman leading his republican opponent, dr. mehmet oz, by five points. president biden joined the growing number of people calling for the resignation of city council members after racist comments in a closed door meeting. angry protesters packed council chambers yesterday demanding they resign. the three council members all latino democrats, include former city council president nury martniez. she stepped down from her leadership role but has not resigned from the council. in leaked recordings from their closed door meeting, martinez can be heard calling a councilman's black son a little monkey in spanish. last night the councilman responded. >> and i take a lot of hits, and i know i practically invite a bunch of them. but my son? man, that makes my soul bleed. it makes my com-- my temper bur, and i know i'm not alone because los angeles has spoken, and it feels the same way. >> all three council members have apologized. republicans are sticking by herschel walker, the gop candidate for georgia. the top party members are campaigning with him amid

allegations that the former football star paid for a woman's abortion in 2009 and later fathered a child with her. nikole killion has more. >> reporter: former football star-turned-senate nominee herschel walker teamed up with the senate's leading republicans, arkansas senator tom cotton and florida senator rick scott, making little mention of the controversy framing it as an attack on him. >> you can see what they're doing. they'll do whatever it takes, say whatever they have to say because they want this seat right here. >> reporter: while scott and cotton are embracing walker, cbs news has learned gop leaders and strategists are increasingly concerned his troubles could cost him in the pivotal senate race. what do you say to those in your party who have concerns? >> herck walker lived the dream of this country. he's come from the ground up, from a small town with no money. he's -- he's worked hard every day. he believes in this country. that's why people are going to vote for him. >> reporter: in recent days, new reports emerged that walker, who opposes abortion, paid for an

abortion and urged the woman to have a second abortion. she claims to be mother of his child and his walker's wife has texted her. walker continues to deny the allegations. >> i know nothing about abortion. it's a lie. let's move on. >> he threatened to kill us and has us move six times in six months. >> reporter: the democratic backing of raphael warnock used its attack ad using walker's son christian who lashed out on social media last week. >> everything's been a lie. >> reporter: with early voting starting in less than a week, many voters are making up their minds. >> a down-to-earth person. he's not pretending, and like he said, we all have a story. >> loved watching him play football. but he should not be in the u.s. senate. >> reporter: nikole killion, cbs news, carrollton, georgia. the fate of parkland shooter nikolas cruz is in the hands of a florida jury.

jurors are set to begin deliberations to determine whether the 24-year-old should receive the death penalty or life in prison without parole. cruz has already pleaded guilty to killing 14 students and three staff members at marjorie stoneman douglas high school in 2018. the entertainment world is mourning the death of film, theater, and television actress angela lansbury. she died yesterday at her home in los angeles. during her seven-decade career, she won six tonys for "mame" and "gypsy." she was one of the last big stars from hollywood's golden age and voiced roles in animated films including "beauty and the beast." she's best known for playing jessica fletcher on the series "murder she wrote." angela lansbury was 96 years old. coming up, convicted killer cleared. charges are dropped against the man who was the subject of a popular podcast "serial." later, entering the metaverse. we're going to show a new

for the first time a panel of health experts is recommending that children ages 8 to 18 be screened for anxiety. the u.s. preventive services task force suggested that primary care doctors use questionnaires to identify children at risk. part of the goal is to reduce the number of children whose mental health conditions go undetected. according to the cdc, nearly six million children have been diagnosed with anxiety, but the number could be larger since the latest estimates are from before the pandemic. meta is offering a new vision for the future, and if you ever wanted to live in a ranch home, well, you may be in luck. dan lieberman has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks closed lower tuesday reversing earlier gains with investors looking ahead awaiting the latest inflation data out later this week and minutes from the federal reserve's latest meeting.
