green. we begin with what's likely to be the last public hearing held by the house committee investigating the january 6th attack on the capitol. today the committee says it will present new evidence and never-before-seen video exploring former president trump's failed attempt to overturn the 2020 election results in the days before and after the riot. natalie brand reports from capitol hill. >> reporter: today the house select january 6th committee says it will focus on former president trump's mindset in his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. unlike previous bombshell hearings, there will be no live witnesses, but each of the committee's nine members will give a presentation. committee aides say the hearing will include taped witness testimony. it's unclear whether that will include discussions the committee had with ginni thomas, the wife of supreme court justice clarence thomas. members say she was urging the trump white house to fight the election results. the hearing is also expected to

feature new video showing efforts to respond to the capitol riot as it unfolded, as well as new evidence from thousands of documents turned over by the u.s. secret service after a july subpoena. >> our job is to make sure that we protect democracy. >> reporter: the committee has to wrap up its work in the next few months with a report expected by the end of the year. that timing coincides with the departure of the panel's two republican members. wyoming's liz cheney lost her primary bid for re-election while adam kinzinger of illinois is retiring. house gop leaders have signaled they may launch their own probe into january 6th if they win the majority in november's midterms. natalie brand, cbs news, capitol hill. and cbs news will carry a special report of the january 6th hearing starting at 1:00 p.m. eastern. a connecticut jury ordered right-wing conspiracy theorist alex jones to pay nearly $1 billion in damages for spreading lies about the sandy hook elementary school shooting.

20 children and six adults were killed in the newtown, connecticut, shooting in 2012. relatives of eight victims and an fbi agent who responded sued jones in connecticut. they said they were harassed and threatened by people after the "info. wars" host called it a hoax. they claim he used the mass shooting to make millions of dollars. >> all i can say is i'm proud that what we were able to accomplish was just to simply tell the truth, and it shouldn't be this hard, and it shouldn't be this scary. >> jones has acknowledged he was wrong about the shooting. in an earlier trial he was ordered to pay nearly $50 million to the parents of another victim. on his show yesterday, jones asked his viewers for donations. his attorney said he will appeal. jones still faces a third defamation trial in texas. former los angeles city

council president nury martinez resigned from her council seat over racist comments she made at a closed door meeting. martinez and two other council members, all latino democrats, have been under pressure to resign after leaked recordings from the meeting surfaced. martinez can be heard making racist remarks about the black son of a white councilman and other crude comments. north korea says its leader, kim jong-un, supervised the launch of two long-range cruise missiles. state media released images of yesterday's missile tests along with photos of kim. it said the missiles flew for nearly three hours and hit a target more than 1,200 miles away. kim said it was a successful demonstration of his military's nuclear strike capabilities and readiness for actual war. breaking overnight, a new round of attacks in ukraine's capital this morning. officials say kamikaze drones made by iran struck the area around kyiv.

one top leader said critical infrastructure facilities were hit, but no other details were given. it was not clear if there were casualties. the power plant was temporarily knocked off the power grid yesterday after a russian missile strike. but as charlie d'agata reports, ukraine will soon be able to fight back with new weapons from the west. >> reporter: russia's punishing missile barrage this week captured on dash cams and other cameras across the country. proof of russia's lethal reach and ukraine's vulnerability in trying to stop it. the brutal retaliation for the blast on the bridge connecting russia to crimea directed by hard-line commander sergei surovikin, promoted by president putin within hours of the bridge attack, now in charge of the war.

shots. yesterday u.s. health officials authorized kid-sized doses for 5 to 11-year-olds ahead of an expected winter surge of the virus. it comes amid a troubling spike in 33 states of a respiratory virus that attacks children called rsv. the cdc says symptoms include coughing, wheezing, runny nose, and decreased appetite. it's transmitted through direct contact. nearly 60,000 children younger than 5 are hospitalized due to the virus each year. there are no approved vaccines. coming up, unnecessary roughness. the raiders' davante adams is charged after shoving a photographer to the ground. and later, setting the art world on fire. why a famed artist is burning his pieces of art worth millions of dollars. this is the "cbs morning news." news."

things went a bit afoul at last night's national league playoff game between the san diego padres and the dodgers in los angeles. a large goose landed in the outfield during the eighth inning. it stayed there for a while as the game went on. eventually the grounds crew swooped in, put a towel over the goose, dropped it into a bin, and removed it from the field. there's a new launch date for "artemis 1," and an nfl player was charged for a post-game shove. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports las vegas raiders' wide receiver davante adams was charged with misdemeanor assault for shoving a photographer to the ground. adams pushed the photographer as he left the field following monday night's loss to the kansas city chiefs. police called it an intentional, overt act that caused whiplash,

a headache, and a possible minor concussion. adams said he pushed the photographer after he jumped in front of him. he later apologized. an "a.p." source said adams could face possible punishment including a fine or suspension. the "miami herald" says nasa is targeting november 14th for a third attempt to launch its "artemis 1" moon rocket. two previous attempt to launch the space agency's most powerful rocket ever were scrubbed due to technical issues. the rocket was moved back into its hangar last month as hurricane ian approached florida. it will send an uncrewed capsule into orbit around the moon and back to earth on a test flight. and "people" says an illinois boy went home for the first time after spending all three years of his life in the hospital. francesco bruno has a rare life-threatening genetic condition that affects a baby's bones, joints, and muscles. in his case, it impacts his

high school students in the u.s. struggled during the covid pandemic. a.c.t. test scores dropped to the lowest level in 30 years according to a report released yesterday. the average score this year was a 19.8 out of 36. 42% met none of the subject benchmarks which include reading, english, math, and science. most painters wouldn't dream of destroying their own masterpieces, but on artist did just that as part of an experiment. damien hirst tossed pieces of his work into a fire at a london art gallery. he said he's transforming his art into nfts, a digital copy of his work. people could keep the nft or take home a physical copy of the artwork. >> nfts are new for me, whereas having something i can hold. i prefer that.
