i'm anne-marie green. breaking overnight, loud explosions rocked the ukrainian capital of kyiv. smoke could be seen rising over buildings in the center of the city. the mayor said several residential buildings were damaged in what he called a drone attack. he tweeted that 18 people were rescued from one building, and some of the blasts happened during the morning rush hour. it comes a week after russia launched deadly strikes across ukraine including the same area of kyiv. meanwhile, russian-backed officials are blaming ukraine for a weekend rocket attack that hit the mayor's office in the separatist-controlled city of donetsk. the municipal building was heavily damaged. one official said it was a miracle no one was killed. ukraine did not claim responsibility or comment on the attack. and billionaire elon musk has changed course a day after saying his spacex company could no longer fund ukraine's use of its starlink internet service indefinitely. the service has helped civilians and ukraine's military stay on

line during the war with russia. citing the need for good deeds on saturday, musk tweeted, "even though starlink is still losing money, we'll keep funding ukraine government for free." people in stockton, california, are resting easy this morning now that a suspected serial killer is in custody. police say the 43-year-old man was on a, quote, mission to kill, and hunting for another victim when they arrested him saturday. he wanted the shooting deaths -- he's wanted in the shooting deaths of six men that terrorized the city for months. tips from the public helped lead to his capture. wendy gillette is in new york with the very latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. police believe the suspect was out hunting for another possible victim when he was arrested. they say they're sure they stopped another killing. residents of stockton, california, are expressing relief two days after the suspect in a series of deadly shootings was taken into police

custody. >> i felt so much joy for the families and relief knowing that we don't have to be paralyzed by fear anymore and anxiety in our community. >> reporter: police said tips from community members helped lead to the arrest of 43-year-old wesley brownlee early saturday during a traffic stop. at the time, police say brownlee had a handgun and was wearing dark clothing and a mask around his neck. >> he was out hunting. we are sure we stopped another killing. >> reporter: authorities say ballistics link brownlee to six shooting deaths. five men killed between july and september in stockton, and another man was killed last year in oakland. a woman is also believed to have been shot and wounded by the suspect last year. ahead of the arrest, stockton police had released this surveillance video of the suspect. >> we'll use every resource at our disposal to make sure the people of our city are protected and feel safe. >> reporter: officials also searched brownlee's home, obtaining a warrant. formal murder charges are

expected to be announced tuesday during his scheduled arraignment. police say their work is not done as they search for a motive in the killings. most of the victims were hispanic men, some were also homeless. anne-marie? >> wendy gillette in new york. thank you very much. iranian state media says that at least eight people were killed and 61 hurt after a fire broke out saturday at a prison in tehran holding political prisoners and anti-government activists. the families of two americans being held there said that they were safe as of yesterday morning. iranian officials say the fire was caused by a fight between inmates in a prison workshop. roxana saberi has more. >> reporter: the flames that erupted from iran's most notorious prison turned deadly with activists fearing the number killed is much higher than claimed by the regime. as the sound of gunshots and explosions rang out in videos posted on line, families waited

anxiously to learn about their loved ones trapped inside. iran's state-run media sent in a reporter claiming firefighters quelled the flames in a sewing workshop and that prisoners were safe in bed. the prison houses both regular criminals and political prisoners like journalists, activists, and recently protesters. the fire has reignited anti-regime rallies a day after angry demonstrators confronted security forces in the city of adibil where a teachers trade association says plain clothes agents had raided this girls school, killing one student and injuring and detaining several others. it's a pattern, activists say, that's emerging across iran. >> it is a very dark moment with regard to thousands of people who have been detained. >> reporter: roxana saberi, cbs news, london.

politics now. with the midterm elections just weeks away, a new cbs news battleground tracker poll shows democratic momentum has stalled amid concerns about the economy. the latest estimate shows republicans are still favored to gain control of the house by a 224 to 211 margin. only 15% of registered voters believe the economy is getting better. 65% say it's getting worse. 20% say it's staying the same. >> it's a very clear choice, clear difference in approaches now on capitol hill and among officeholders where the focus ats, the focus for the president, is to cut that cost of living and to cut the pressure, give people more breathing room at a time where inflation remains a major concern. >> when asked about inflation, 68% said the biden administration could be doing more. 32% said it is doing all it can. and 63% of respondents say gas prices are going up. that's compared to 16% in august.

police in virginia say a suspect is in custody after eight people were shot and wounded near the campus of james madison university. investigators say multiple gunshots were fired into a crowd at an outdoor gathering yesterday morning in harrisonburg. eight people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening inj injuries. the students are not currently enrolled. a violent carjacking of an uber driver was caught on video. russia comments on brittney griner. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." vladimir putin said the wnba star's release is a priority for president biden but not moscow. griner was arrested in february after russian officials said that they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at a moscow airport. she pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine years in prison. the biden administraon osedriswap bring home griner and fellow jailed american paul whelan. kpix reports on a terrifying armed robbery and carjacking of an uber driver. the incident was captured on dash cam video. the suspect sitting in the back seat at first made friendly conversation with the driver. after a few minutes, one of them pulled out a gun. they ordered the driver out of the car, took his belongings, tossed the camera to the ground, and drove away. >> it's scary. i feel, you know, helpless at that time. i don't have a phone.
