for their stays compared to the government rate. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. breaking overnight, ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy says at least one person was killed in a russian missile strike on a residential building in the southern ukrainian port city of mykolaiv. ukraine also says russia attacked an energy center causing several explosion, and it comes one day after russia launched a deadly wave of iranian-made kamikaze drone attacks on multiple cities, killing at least four people. ukrainian police tried to shoot down the drones. the attacks sparked more international outcry against russia, and now the u.s. is also promising possible punishment for iran. bradley blackburn is in new york for the latest on all of this. good morning. >> they're trying to terrify civilians with the drone attacks. mostly they have been missile strikes. these drones are slower moving, but they're still deadly effective weapons.

new outrage after russia launched deadly attacks on several major ukrainian cities using iranian-made drones that explode on impact. protesters at the iranian embassy in kyiv demanded iran stop providing the weapons to russia. >> the united states strongly condemns russia's missile strikes today, which continues to demonstrate putin's brutality. >> the white house slammed the attacks, while the state department says the transfer of drones to russia is a violation of the security council resolution. >> this is something that we're continuing to monitor closely on our end, and we're in close touch with our allies and partners, including those in the united nations to address iran's dangerous proliferation of weapons to russia. >> ukraine is fighting back. this video shows ukrainian police working to shoot down the unmanned aircraft. ukraine's president volodymyr zelenskyy says his forces have destroyed at least 37 drones since sunday.

he also called on the world to give his country more air defense systems. despite the recent escalation in russian attacks, there were hugs, smiles, and tears among this group of ukrainian women, prisoners of war, after they returned to their families in a massive prison swap. and those drone strikes may be a way for russia to conserve its stock of precision missiles. president zelenskyy claims russia has ordered more than 2,400 of them from iran, so this wave of attacks, anne-marie, may just be the beginning. >> bradley blackburn in new york. thank you so much. candidates took part in heated debates in their second and final debate to represent ohio in the u.s. senate, democratic senator tim ryan squared off against republican venture capitalist and author jd vance. they clashed over the issue of abortion. earlier this year a 10-year-old ohio girl crossed state lines to

receive an abortion after she was raped because of ohio's fetal heartbeat law. >> and jd and his extreme crew, they want to have a national abortion ban. they're not happy with people having to go to illinois. they want people to get a passport and have to go to canada. >> and both the media and tim ryan need to be honest about the fact she would have never have been raped in the first place if tim ryan had done his job on border security. >> vance said he would vote for the national abortion ban at 15 weeks introduced by senator lindsey graham, but that he also believes in certain exceptions. in georgia, republican governor brian kemp and stacey abrams faced off. last night's issues included guns, education, and crime. >> no sheriffs are endorsing her statewide because of her stances on wanting to defund the police, eliminate cash bail, and serving on the boards of organizations like the margaret casey foundation that supports and

gives grants to organizations that are promoting the defund the police movement. >> if i may respond because he actually lied there. >> yes. >> i do have the support of sheriffs, but unlike mr. kemp, i do not make it my plan to list every person who supports me. >> more than 100,000 people in georgia turned out at the polls yesterday on the first day of early voting. the house committee is looking at how much the trump organization was charging secret service to stay in its hotels during his presidency. the former president and his family's security details paid far in excess of the government approved rates, at least 40 times all at taxpayers' expense. more from scott macfarlane. >> reporter:ec the house oversight committee showed trump hotels and properties charged skecret

service agencies five times the rate for protecting him. committee member gerry connolly. >> here's a man who boasts of how wealthy he is, and yet he is nickelling and diming the secret service, providing protection to the press family for everything they'e worth, and i just think -- i think it ought to bother everybody. >> reporter: in one case the secret service was charged more than $1,100 for agents who were protecting trump's son, eric, well above the allowable $242 rate. they cited visits to his bedminster golf club and mar-a-lago and pointed to a public service by eric trump in 2019 who says the secret service stays at the trump properties for free. for over four years the secret service made 669 payments to the trump organization, totaling more than $1.4 million. >> this wasn't, you know, one thing that happened because of

extraordinary circumstances. it was routine that donald trump and his companies would gouge the american taxpayers. >> reporter: in a statement to cbs news, eric trump said services provided to the secret service were offered at cost, discounted, or for free. meanwhile the house committee says it's seek a list from the secret service of all of the agency's expenses at trump properties. scott macfarlane, cbs news, washington. well, the justice department is recommending that former top trump aide steve bannon be sentenced to six months in prison and pay a $200,000 fine. bannon is scheduled to be sentenced friday on two counts of contempt of congress. he was convicted earlier this year of defying a congressional subpoena to testify and supply documents to the house committee investigating the capitol riot. bannon's lawyers deny he was acting in bad faith and are asking for probation. president biden officially kicked off the application process for his highly anticipated student loan

forgiveness program. >> i'm going to officially launch this new application site at studentaid.gov. this is a game-changer for millions of americans. >> borrowers who qualify can apply go have up to $10,000 in federal student loan debt canceled. it's $20,000 if they received federal pell grants. mr. biden said 8 million borrowers already had applied for relief in a test over the weekend. he said filling out the application form takes less than five minutes. >> a suspected serial killer is set to be arraigned later today in california where he'll likely face murder charges. 43-year-old wesley brownlee was arrested saturday in stockton. authorities said yesterday he has a criminal history that includes traffic violations and convictions for drug crimes. investigators say ballistics link him to the shooting of five men in stockton this year and another man in oakland last year.

authorities are seeking information on four people of interest in connection with a fast-moving fire in washington state. the nakia creek fire has burned more than 1,500 acres in a state forest northeast of portland, oregon. police say they're trying to identify two men and two women who were seen on the ridge of the fire when it started october 9th.000 residents nearby told sunday. a nearby prison was also evacuated yesterday. cooler weather helped to fight the blaze. >> this is not normal. i think this is one of the driest summers we've had on record. thfires 5% contained though. "the boston globe" says the celtics are honoring the late hall of famer bill russell with special uniforms this season. the team unveiled the city edition uniforms yesterday.

big rally. the dow gained 550, the nasdaq added 354, and the s&p 500 was up 94 points. netflix is launching a new feature that lefts people using an existing account migrate a profile over to a brand-new account while preserving all their viewing history and settings. it's part of an effort to make it easier for people using som someone else's account -- a violation of the company's policy -- to start following the rules by paying for their own account. toys "r" us is making a holiday season comeback with 454 store selections at macy stores this past weekend. the toy store giant filed for bankruptcy in 2017 and closed all of its stores in 2018 as brick and mortar locations saw declining sales. it's meant to help capitalize on the holiday season rush. and trick-or-treaters won't be spared inflation this year
