astros. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the fast approaching midterm elections, just 15 days away, that will decide control of congress. campaign fever is heating up across the country. the white house announced that president biden will campaign in the key state of florida next week. he'll appear at a rally alongside democratic candidate for governor charlie crist. tomorrow in the battleground state of pennsylvania, democratic senate candidate lieutenant governor john fetterman will face republican dr. mehmet oz in their only debate. early in person and mail-in voting are under way in a number of states. christina ruffini takes a look at what's at stake. these are tough fights. >> reporter: on "face the nation," speaker of the house nancy pelosi said the results of the midterms will be decided in the last minutes of the race. >> i see very clearly that the ownership of the ground is with us. >> reporter: but the latest cbs

news battleground tracker poll has the house likely going to the republicans and the senate at a 50/50 split. >> i am worried about the level of voter turnout among young people and working people who will be voting democratic. >> reporter: the surge of support democrats saw over the summer following the overturn of roe v. wade has faded. >> crime is going through the roof. >> reporter: as republicans are trying to focus voters on issues like crime, immigration, and the economy. >> this is an economic and health crisis. >> reporter: in several key races including the tied up arizona senate, republican candidates have openly questioned the results of the 2020 election. >> i think trump won in 2020. >> reporter: house republican liz cheney warned that election deniers are a threat to democracy. >> no one of any party should be voting for people who are election deniers. >> i ran twice. i won twice. >> reporter: but at a rally in texas, former president trump repeated his usual fall claims then teased another run. >> in order to make our country successful, safe, and glorious

[ cheers ] >> reporter: and president biden said in an interview this weekend he intends to run again in 2024 but won't make that decision officially until after the midterm elections. christina ruffini, cbs news, the white house. we could find out today who will be britain's next prime minister. yesterday former prime minister boris johnson said that he's dropping out of the race to replace liz truss. she quit last week only after six weeks in office. truss replaced johnson after he was ousted in july amid a series of scandals. the ruling conservative party is expected to pick former finance minister rishi sunak to be the next prime minister. and russia is stepping up its claims that ukraine is preparing to detonate a radioactive dirty bomb on its own territory, possibly blaming it on moscow. the russian defense minister made those allegations yesterday in phone calls with his

counterparts in four countries including the u.s. washington rejected the claim. a dirty bomb uses conventional explosives to spread radioactive material into the air and contaminate the surrounding area. it is not a nuclear explosion and has never been used before. astrid martinez with the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. without providing any evidence, russia's defense minister made this accusation which the united states and many western officials are rejecting and calling them transparently false. ukraine is also responding by calling the allegation absurd and dangerous. this as concerns over an escalation in the war rise. the u.s., britain, and france released a joint statement rejecting russia's claim that ukraine is planning to use a dirty bomb on its own people, saying, quote, the world would see through any attempt to use this allegation as a pretext for escalation. in a televised address last

night, ukraine's president volodymyr zelenskyy also pushed back say figure russia calls and says that ukraine is allegedly preparing something, it means only one thing -- that russia has already prepared all of it. zelenskyy also said power has been restored to parts of his country after russia unleashed more strikes on ukraine's energy facilities over the weekend. the country has implemented rolling blackouts to conserve energy. residents of mikolaiv sifted through the rubble after missiles hit two apartment blocks sunday. a playground was also destroyed. luckily officials say no one was killed as many residents had already moved away after a similar attack nearby about six months ago. >> these strikes have a clear gel -- clear goal -- to make the ukrainian people suffer. >> reporter: russia installed officials also continue to evacuate thousands from the occupied city of kherson as they

warn of a looming counteroffensive to retake the area. today marks nine months since the fighting began in ukraine. anne-marie? >> astrid martinez in new york. thank you very much. north and south korea exchanged warning shots along their disputed western sea boundary, that's according to each country's military. south korea said its navy broadcast warnings and fired warning shots today to repel a north korean merchant ship that violated the boundary. north korea responded by firing artillery shots toward its territorial waters where a south korean naval ship intruded. the exchange comes amid continuing tensions over north korea's recent weapons tests and ongoing military drills between south korea and the u.s. opening statements are set for today in harvey weinstein's sex crimes trial in los angeles. the 70-year-old former movie mogul faces a possible life sentence on rape or sexual assault charges allegedly involving five women between 2004 and 2013. weinstein has pleaded not

guilty. >> we're going to try like hell to make sure he gets a fair trial. >> harvey, you messed with the wrong women. we will see you here in los angeles where hopefully your conviction will leave you in jail for life. >> meantime, weinstein is appealing the 23-year sentence that he received in new york after being convicted of rape and sexual assault there in 2020. author salman rushdie has lost sight in one eye and the use of a hand. that's according to his agent who spoke with a spanish language newspaper over the weekend. rushdie, who's 75, was attacked in august during a lecture in new york suffering 18 stab wounds to his neck, chest, and torso. the suspect has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and assault charges. and we now know who will be playing in this year's world series. >> on the seven pitch, harper -- hits one in the air, left center field.
