stopped. good evening, i'm sara donchey. today's 5.1 earthquake was the largest. hitting south of hamilton. a few after shocks, largest one is a magnitude 3.5 this afternoon. you never know where you will be or what you will be doing when it hits. take this lady in san jose. >> i was in the middle of the massage and was very relaxed until that happened. it didn't scare me because it didn't last very long. >> probably a good thing to be that chill and relaxed. people in my building felt the earthquake. that was the case

across the bay area, here in san francisco. people had very experiences of this earthquake. luckily no injuries or damages to report of. >> reporter: when the paper decorations started moving, san francisco teacher peter larva knew he was in for another earthquake. >> then it started really shaking. i kind of felt it on the ground. it was more wobbly. you could hear the papers, but not really feel it. once it started shaking the floor, we really knew it was an earthquake. >> reporter: he was alone in ingleside. i ran to see if i was crazy or imagined it or something. they were all ends beneath their desk, holding on like we had just done earthquake drills for last week. >> reporter: 50 miles away in san jose. >> it literally had everything

shaking. i was watching the inwith does shake. it spooked me a little bit, but not so bad. >> we were upstairs when the whole thing just started shocking. i thought oh my god, we're having an earthquake. i was talking to my friend. we're both like awe. the last one we were in that felt that strong was loma prieta. >> i was in my anatomy class when it happened. my teacher kind of stopped teaching while it was going with a little grumble. it was first ery e ev confusion. >> a lot of students didn't feel it at all. kids outside or the gym had no idea. >> reporter: interestly this quake was the largest on the calaveras fault since a 5.4

quake in 2007. . sara? >> we spoke to a geologist who called today's quake a gentle reminder to prepare for something a lot bigger e. he said the quake could have been bigger. >> if it was closer, there could have been light damage. things like bottles flying off shelves in supermarket. maybe rattling off shelves in your homes. thankfully this was just far enough away up into the hills that those sort of events didn't impact very many people. but certainly if the earthquake like this were to strike on the portion of fault that's really beneath the cities. we would ha experiencing the significant shaking. >> you can always count on earthquake twitter no matter what big or small. people jump on there the second the

earthquake hits. people were fascinating too. the twitter account for the san andreas fall wasn't me. it was a doozy. so paul, okay, let's talk science. what can you tell us about the actual fault line, where the quake came from? >> reporter: right, everybody outside of california thinks the san andreas fault is the only fault that runs through the length of california. but we talk about the fault tree in the bay area, the hayward fault, the calaveras fault. and that's where this particular earthquake was centered to the east of san jose. as the expert from the usgs says this is a good spot for that earthquake to happen because it releases some of the seismic tension and hopefully helps us avoid a larger quake happening along the partularfault. when we evaluate these bay area. statistically it is the most likely to experience a major earthquake. 6.7 magnitude or larger over the next 20 years according to a study done back in 2014, so almost ten years

ago already. but the calaveras fault is the most likely to produce a major earthquake in the bay area. it is actually only 22% of the chance to produce that magnitude of earthquake. 6.7 would do a lot of damage if it happens in the more densely populated parts of the bay area. it's been a while since we've seen an earthquake. the last one was nap baa back in 2016. 5.5 along the section of the calaveras fault in 2007. otherwise you have to go back to the loma prieta quake in 1989. this depose back to the 1850s. these size earthquakes used to be frequent. hopefully we don't get back into that pattern any time soon. this happens on geologic time. considering from our human brains. >> right. i kind of love when it falls to the disturbing graphics. did you feel it? >> i felt nothing. i was at an eye doctors appointment in san

hit and killed a woman on sunset was on drugs at the time. one woman died, the other was taken to the hospital after being hit yesterday morning. the driver, 47-year-old robert green, from hayward was booked into jail for dui and vehicular manslaughter charges. tonight a pretty wild story out of antioch. the mayor said mayor thorpe says a man punched him today. earlier in his statement he said after giving a speech at a luncheon hosted by the antioch chambers of commerce, i was aggressively approached by an older white male in his late 50s. as i attempted to walk away, the man punched me in my chest. violence is no place in the public discourse and will no longer be led.hois that individual will be prosecuted. the mayor said the man tried to hit him again, but people jumped in to stop him. we reached out to antioch police to see if they arrested

anyone for this, but we have still not heard back. we met face to face for a debate moderated by one of the bay area's most well-known rappers. >> i'm anxious to hear thoughts, plans, profit. agendas, incentives, and let's cesar chavez who can work under pressure. >> he's a big time community activist as well and has spent much of his career doing that. now the two front runners in the race are tao and lauren taylor. here is what they had to say when asked about crime in oakland. >> i firmly believe we can be compassionate, supportive, bring the preventive resources that empower and uplift our community. while also being

firm. >> public safety, it is key. but do not talk to me about public safety if you are refusing to directors. i'm talking about direct investment into community. [ music ] teachers need to know they will be paid [ music ] [ music ] san francisco teachers and staff members were out protesting payroll problems at the school district this evening in costume. organizers say tear goal is to haunt the school board into fixing its payroll system. they say several teachers have not gotten the correct pay or benefits for almost a year . >> doing what we love is not a reason to take advantage of us. this is now the 10th month of

this crisis. >> giving a statement to kpix. saying they're working to investigate each payment issue, fix it, and make sure the same errors don't happen again. so it is beginning to look a lot like ski season in the sierra. resorts have -- more consecutive cold days and 10 million gallons of water. so i think we're getting closer, i guess. >> right. >> i mean rain would be nice. >> rain would be nice. last year at this time we had the big atmospheric river that drenched the bay area, but brought a lot of snow to the high sierra. they were able to open for halloween weekend. that's not going to be the case this year unfortunately. we will hope for a snowier november. a rainier november for us. the rest of october, it does not look very favorable. mostly clear skies tonight, minimal fog for the next couple of nights. minor day-to-day changes as we head through the rest of the workweek and even

into the weekend. the weekend is also trending in a drier direction. yesterday at this time we were talking about the potential for some hit or miss showers for the bay area over the weekend. the rain chances have diminished to the 10% to 20% range and now pushed back into about the middle of next week. tuesday, tuesday night, maybe waiting until wednesday for at least a decent chance for showers. but this is the time of the year when we have been dry for a while as we tend to get excited about every rain chance that will head our way. but the atmosphere will have other ideas. just think of this when you're thinking of our rain chances in late october and early november. the atmosphere, the football is the rain chances that we are the sky hitting for the harder landing. there are some signs of good news in the long range data. it shows a wetter than normal pattern for the whole western u.s. it's a weak signal in the bay area, but hopefully we will get some showers as we head into the first several days of november. we'll keep you updated as that part of the forecast gets closer. clear

skies overhead. cool temperatures. most f us in the low to mid-50s. down to 44 degrees in santa rosa. i don't think you will drop much more than a couple of degrees. but there's a chance you would dip down tonight. mostly 40s inland. low temperatures around the bay. the temperatures tomorrow almost identical to what we would have today, which means 3 to 5 degrees below average. mid to upper 60s around the bay with the mix of upper 60s and the 70s. not much has changed. cooler weather will move in on friday and settle over the weekend. not a huge problem. but temperatures will try to warm up early next week. there's the chance for showers. the very tail end of the seven-day forecast is just a chance of showers at this point, but we'll take what we can get in terms of signs of hope. the good news for trick or treaters or the parents of trick or treaters is that temperatures will be near normal for monday. it looks

like we're going to be dry, so you don't have to water proof whatever outfit you'll be wearing, vern. all right, straight ahead in sports. oh man, it got heated tonight in the desert. the usually unflappable klay thompson. oh, something happened to this star warriors

all right, vern is back with more on the warriors. it was an interesting show? >> safe to say that. four games in and boy, the nba with the warriors. they gave up 72 points in the first half. 62 in the second. no defensive intensity there at the suns tonight. it was about one minute of heated intensity that was highlighted tonight. this is the first road game of the season, picking up second quarter a tight game. klay thompson on the road of the no look behind the back pass for james wiseman. the dunk cut the sun's lead to 2. wiseman scores 12 points. chris paul, he did chris paul things. buzzer beater puts up phoenix 72-56. third quarter check this out. klay thompson and devin booker, started chirping. both received

technicals. but thompson wouldn't stop. so for the first time in his career, he got ejected. he kept referring to his four nba rings to a booker on his way out. from there it was all suns. former st. mary gale pumped in 17 points. suns led by as many as 29. and much of the time devin booker was the best player on the floor. deep three here. he led phoenix with 34. they won it 134-105. warriors record now is a difference. here is booker on what he was saying.
