with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin this morning in the election battleground state of pennsylvania which could play a large part in deciding which party controls the u.s. senate. with less than two weeks before the midterms, democratic lieutenant governor john fetterman faced republican tv personality dr. mehmet oz last night in their own debate. it was a chance for voters to see fetterman and assess whether he's up for the job as he recovers from a stroke that he had in may. astrid martinez is in new york with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. last night's first and only senate debate in pennsylvania was a pivotal moment in the final stretch before the midterm elections. lieutenant governor john fetterman continues to face serious questions about his health. meanwhile, his opponent, republican dr. mehmet oz, is fighting to take a seat currently held by republicans. >> let's get started. >> reporter: last night, democrat john fetterman and republican mehmet oz faced off in a high-stakes hour-long debate. >> i had a stroke. he's never let me forget that.

>> reporter: immediately fetterman addressed what he called the elephant in the room -- his recovery from a recent stroke. he used the closed caption device during the debate. at times speaking haltingly and occasionally stumbling like on this answer to a question regarding his changed position on fracking -- >> i don't -- i don't -- i support fracking, and i stand -- and i do support fracking. >> reporter: oz who mostly ignored fetterman's health challenges played up his own status as a political outsider. >> i'm a surgeon, i'm not a politician. >> reporter: the debate did get heated at points while discussing contentious issues like abortion and crime. >> i'm the only person on the stage now that has -- is successful about pushing back against gun violence. >> he argued that people should be let out of jail without any bail no matter what they did to get in there. >> reporter: the top issue for pennsylvania voters, according to a cbs news battleground tracker, the economy and inflation. >> john fetterman thinks the

minimum wage is the weekly allowance from his patients. >> dr. oz can't understand what it is like. he has ten gigantic mansions. >> reporter: cbs battlegrounds tracker also has this race as a tossup at the moment. in a state where the winner could determine which party controls the senate. and the latest cbs news battleground tracker gives republicans a slight edge to win the majority in the house, while the senate is still up in the air. >> astrid martinez in new york, thank you very much. the los angeles police department says that it is investigating whether a secret audio recording of city council members' racist remarks was taped illegally. a council president nury martinez resigned earlier this month after the recording surfaced. it was taped last year during a private meeting attended by martinez and two other latino council members. they have resisted demands to also resign. there's no word on who made the recording. a russian court rejected

brittney griner's appeal and upheld her nine-year prison sentence on drug charges. the wnba star appeared on a video link during yesterday's hearing outside moscow. she was convicted after russian officials said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at a moscow airport in february. griner will now be sent to a type of labor camp. president biden has asked about his -- was asked about his next move in efforts to win her release. >> we are in constant contact with russian authorities to get brittney and others out, and so far we've not been meeting with much response. but we're not stopping. >> president biden has said that he would meet with russian president vladimir putin at the g20 summit next month if putin was willing to discuss griner's release. police in st. louis say monday's deadly shooting at a

high school could have been much worse. two people were killed. 15-year-old student alexandria bell and 61-year-old gym teacher jean kucka. seven students were wounded. investigators say the shooter, 19-year-old orlando harris, was armed with an ar-15-style rifle and more than 600 rounds of ammunition. the former student at the school was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police. authorities say they found a handwritten note in his car saying he was an isolated loner his entire life. >> the threat here is over. however, we are going to continue to be vigilant in our schools and neighborhoods to be present and to be alert for situations that could create harm to our community. >> the gunman was able to get inside the school even though the doors were locked, and send -- and seven security guards were on duty. rapper kanye west is facing more fallout over his anti-semitic remarks.

his sports agency, donda sports, has lost two high-profile athletes -- nfl star aaron donnell and would nba star jaylen brown. announced yesterday that they are cutting ties with his agency. it comes after a number of corporations also dropped their relationship with the singer following his hurtful comments. jonathan vigliotti has more. >> reporter: rapper and designer kanye west thought he was untouchable. nine days ago he said this -- >> i can say anti-semitic things, and adidas can't drop me. now what? now what? >> reporter: amid tumbling stocks, the german sneaker giant severed ties with the artist, statement it does not tolerate of hate speech, and it will stop mpanies. west's yeezy brands once brought adidas nearly $2 billion in annual sales. critics said they were puting profit ahead of ethics.

foundation, he said the leak made his colleagues on the court's majority targets for assassination. the opinion was leaked before the court eliminated the nationwide right to abortion. he said the leak was a grave betrayal of trust by somebody. alito also mentioned that a man was charged in an alleged attempt to kill justice brett kavanaugh after being arrested near his home. authorities said the man was upset over the leaked draft. some students went viral with their creative headwear, and voters are turning out in georgia. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the atlanta journal constitution" reports early voting turnout in georgia has already surpassed more than one million people, shattering midterm election records. state election officials said voters are flocking to in-person early voting locations ahead of the november 8th midterm. >> to put that into perspective, ats point the last about 590,000 votes.

"the arizona republic" says five people were rescued after being stranded more than 200 feet underground overnight at the grand canyon caverns. the group completed a tour of the caverns sunday when the only elevator broke down as they were getting ready to head back to the surface. they spent the night in an underground hotel room inside the caverns. rescuers used ropes and a harness to pull the tourists to safety the next day. no one was hurt. and "the washington post" says a philippines college professor asked her students to wear anti-cheating hats for a midterm exam, and they went all out. the students showed up for their mechanical engineering test this month wearing all sorts of designs on their heads. the professor said that she didn't have problems with her students cheating, so the hats were just for fun.
