[ end of song ] vac anne makovec is watching this one. >> chopper 5 over the scene this afternoon. this is in the area of bancroft way near the northern end of aquatic park. at about 12:45 a cargo train hit a semi trailer . the load lost most of its metal parts. the cause of the crash is under investigation. this comes after a person was hit and killed by a train in berkeley in the

area of carlton street near the end of aquatic way, reed . voters decide. so we are less than two weeks out from election day, and one of the most hotly contested races is to replace libby schaaf as the next mayor of oakland. two candidates are urging voters to support both of them. here's how that works. oakland uses a ranked choice voting system, so oakland councilmembers lauren taylor and trevor read joined forces today to ask you the voter to rank them one and two on the ballot in that order. a candidate , two status quo politicians endorsed by mayor libby schaaf who haven't been able to build coalitions behind their campaigns are now endorsing each other at the very last minute. so this week we are profiling the front runners in

that race to become oakland's next mayor. let's start with member lauren taylor. our wilson walker has what to expect if he comes out on top in november. >> i have been here since 1970, family-owned business, as you can see. we have been here a long time. we are longtime residents of oakland. mister rodriguez has spent decades helping people clean up after dissolve stars and disasters is how he would describe his neighborhood. >> and this is what we deal with. this is what kids have to go through to go to school. every day. >> asked rodriguez if oakland is headed in the right direction . >> all the citizens, the businesses are flowing out of here. they want out. and that's a shame. >> it is a sentiment shared across oakland that things are not going in the right direction. and it's in that climate of frustration that voters will choose oakland's

next mayor. mike it's good to see you as well, absolutely. how are you? folks are furious about the state of the safety. the illegal dumping, william angry and frustrated too. i am a kid from oakland, born and raised here in this credible town my background is not typical of a politician or elected official. i'm a biomedical engineer, that's what i went to school for. >> district council member loren taylor speaking at a diversity and inclusion event . >> one of those is to invest in programs like this, contract development programs, and construction resource center. >> he says his perspective is not the status quo. >> when we take a look at what it takes to move forward, it's going to take an outsider. i came into the government four years ago. >> one area he would like to see is the race to solve violent crime. >> we've got to show something

, show folks that we are going to hold folks and perpetrators accountable. >> he is one of two running from east oakland. >> we have never had a mayor who is represented east oakland. there is a reason that half of the city looks the way that it has, it has gotten limited investment. >> but frustration with house looseness, affects the entire city. >> area, a lot of residence are worried that solutions are needed soon. >> if you are not registered to vote registered to vote, because your vote matters. for me , it is about making sure oakland gets what we need to realize our full potential. >> really appreciate everyone here. >> in oakland, wilson walker, kpix 5. >> thank you, wilson. you will

area actually got an alert ahead of the shaking like you were an supposed to do on the shake app. >> the early warning system will automatically alert you in the effect of an earthquake, but you still have to opt in, download the app and install it on your phone. and that's really limiting its reach. california's office of emergency offices says the more than 95,000 people that are moderate warned a large earthquake was on the way. >> the point of early earthquake warning is not to alert you of every little rumble that you may possibly feel, only the ones that may knock stuff off the shelves or put you in harm's way. >> the state and federal government built hundreds of earthquake centers across california. they can often detect an earthquake and send out warnings before people from the epicenter even feel the shaking. but you have to opt in and sign up for alerts. >> utilizes a downloadable app

called my shake. you can download that your phone, it's free and get alerts that way. >> the u.s. geological survey says there is a relatively small chance this quake will be followed by an even bigger one, but small aftershocks they say are likely. >> there is a 1 and 100 chance of an aftershock greater than an magnitude 5. >> state officials say in the aftermath of the quake many downloaded be my shake app. still, it is better to be informed before the big one. >> this app is out there for free for them to download, so they can get advanced notification. >> if you have an android phone you might have automatically received an alert today whether you opted in or not. for everyone else you still need to download the app. in santa clara, devon feely, kpix 5. thank you so much. you can find more coverage on kpix.com in the top story. you will

welcome back. we continue to profile the front runners in the race to replace oakland mayor libby schaaf. earlier in the newscast ever wilson walker spoke with city councilmember loren taylor. he also set down with treva reid, the councilmember currently representing east oakland. >> we have been right here about right here about 20 years. a little bit over 20 actually, about 25. >> powell says his neighborhood has seen ups and

downs in those 25 years. the recent surge in violence has not skipped his street, he says the past two years have been a challenge. >> yeah, i mean, the violence, the dumping, the trash, the roads , i mean you know. like you said, everything is going in the wrong direction , and the spike in the violence, i don't know. but i am still optimistic. i love oakland. and i'm here. and i'm going to do my part to make a change. >> we have heard a lot of that in oakland, that there needs to be changed, and it's with that sense that things are not going the right way that voters will choose oakland's next mayor. it's back it's great seeing you again from artoday. >> people want to see our city is going to function and we are going to shop delivering for them, and the things that they deserve. taxpayers are not seeing us showing up on the basics, keeping our city clean and beautiful. hi, hey, how are you doing? treva reid holding a town

the bay area things are looking good.as we get closer to the end of the workweek, lots of sunshine out there today and lots of sunshine again, tomorrow. back to near average temperatures tomorrow for one day, and then a stronger onshore wind, additional cloud cover, spells a minor cooldown as we hit the end of the workweek. the storm track aims well to our north, rain chances for the weekend have all but disappeared. there is a chance that we saw a couple sprinkles from those passing clouds, friday through saturday night, but it's 10% lower in terms of even a few sprinkles here and there. better rain chances on the way into november. tuesday, november 1st, but it looks like the middle of next week, wednesday, we might see scattered showers. it's been about six weeks since we've had measurable rainfall. it was nice to see the rain back in mid-september, but we don't expect it back quite now. we will keep our eyes op fo thra ca

outsidplenty outside in san jose, running in the upper 60s. 72 degrees in santa rosa, that's the warm spot. 70 in concord, but 62 downtown. it's going to be another cool night over night. most temperatures bumping out the upper 40s, but some 30s and 40s for the low valley, cool air collecting and those valleys to begin the day on thursday. at high temperatures will warm up with lots of sunshine. no fog, so temperatures will climb up to what is most normal for october if not a few degrees above normal. around the south end of the bay, highs in the santa clara valley, mostly in the low 70s, including 72 in san jose.mostly low 70s inland and the east bay. the warmest spots reaching up to the mid-70s. 60s in san francisco with mid to upper 60s for oakland in the east bay. this time of year, not a huge contrast between san francisco and oakland's highs. the 70s for most inland parts of the north bay. just a
