we are seeing people going on road trips last. people are staying at home. >> it's been crazy. >> now at 11:00, high gas prices have been hitting our bank accounts hard for months on end. but now the governor is going after oil company profits. so will that be enough to stop the spike? why one expert says no. good evening, i'm sara donchey. so if you drive a car in the bay area, you have felt the pain at pump surely. now the governor is pointing his fingers at exhale companies. gas prices have dropped a bit over the past month here in california. regular costs $5.80 on average one month ago. today

it costs $5.68. however, our gas prices, the high of $3.76. we don't even know what that's like here. so the question is now. is the governor's plan a good long-term solution to keep prices from spiking? anne makovec live for us in mill valley tonight with what the experts are saying about this. andrea? >> reporter: well sarah, the good news is gas prices are going down here in california. now an expert i talk to tonight says now is the time to shop around for the best price. now is also the time to not forget how high the prices got in the last few months. >> i like here because it's the cheapest. even the gas station we were at a minute ago was $6. this one is like $1.50 cheaper. >> reporter: drivers are starting to sew see only see.

the state is looking into a windfall property tax on oil companies. >> this has been tried a few times. we've learned it's very difficult to design the windfall property tax that only hits hits. [ inaudible ] he will do nothing, but the price of gas, especially since addressing high gas prices. >> what happened this year is the crude oil increase. there's nothing we could do about that. that's a world market. >> reporter: as frustrated as drivers were about paying more than $6 per gallon. >> it's hard working a minimum wage job or a job you don't get

paid much. >> reporter: the goal is to get to the bottom of the mystery gas tax, a tax generating billions of dollars. >> for the last seven years, we have been seeing an extra 30 cents to 40 cents a gallon. in total it's added up to more than $40 billion. >> reporter: overall the government should do more to keep oil companies in check. >> there should be a cap on how much they can charge. after that, that's covered by their temps. >> reporter: a committee has been formed to try to get to the bottom of this mystery tax. the return is as the prices go down, the focus for the search for answers will fade. sara? >> so andrea, i'm wondering how much lower can we actually expect the gas prices to get this time? >> reporter: yeah, so it's been

a high school student in fairfield was arrested for bringing a handgun to school. not just that, but police say he had an extended magazine. police say the student threatened another boy that was taken to the office. that's when officers found the loaded gun in his bag. the student was taken to juvenile detention and booked on several weapons charges. okay, everybody in our newsroom is talking about this video today. it looks like it came from a horror movie, very real though for a family in pasadena. when a woman with a

pick axe just started smashing in all the windows in the house with the family's newborn baby inside. lauren posen has the story of what happened next. >> we got a target. >> reporter: arman says he got notification at monday from a security system that something was going on at his house. >> all i see is a woman it trying to bash our door in. >> reporter: inside his house, his mother lawn and new born baby. as nay look up, they see the massive pick axe about to britain again. it shows the woman continuing to destroy the huge glass windows on the front of the home. each time the glass shattering louder and louder as they hit the ground. one of those windows is where moments before the attack. he

the middle to upper 50s. more cloud covers will move in. stronger onshore breeze. slightly cooler teatures towards the end the we lein the forecast on saturday. we will see dry conditions continuing into early next week. the next chance of rain doesn't head our way until wednesday, but it looks fairly promising at this point. it's still seven days away, but the weather prediction center, which is another branch of noaa, along with the national hurricane center, all looking at different aspects of the weather. they're outlining the bay area for a potential of light rain. most of us less than .10. slightly higher amounts in the elevations of the north bay and the santa cruz mountains. i'll emphasize this again, it's the seventh day of the seven-day forecast. it's a long way out there. right now clear skies overhead. temperatures are dropping off. we've got mostly mid to low 50s down to 29 degrees in livermore. temperatures will drop down to the middle

portions of the 40s for most of us. upper 40s in the north bay valley. even the coolest temperatures are only going to be about 5 degrees below average, so nothing record setting, nothing that far out of the ordinary. low 60s along the coast for highs tomorrow. mid to upper 60s around the south end of the bay down to the peninsula. low 70s in the santa clara valley. 72 degrees in san jose. mostly low 70s in the east bay. the warmest spots only reached the mid-70s, which isn't that warm for this time of the year. mid-60s in san francisco. temperatures for the east bay reaching the r s, most of the golden gate. until you go part north, farther north. but then we do climb back up to near above average levels. especially for inland parts of the bay area. a chance for showers will arrive potentially as early tuesday, more likely by wednesday next week. we'll keep you updated on that. good news for the trick or treaters.
