democrats. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin this morning with elon musk's apparent takeover of twitter. "the washington post" and other news outlets are reporting that the richest man closed a $44 billion deal to acquire the social media platform. according to the "post," he ousted top executives from the company including the ceo. musk is expected to speak to twitter employees today during a company town hall. he told advertisers yesterday that twitter should be warm and welcoming to all. naomi ruchim is in new york with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. the drama of this twitter takeover appears to have finally reached a conclusion. elon musk is said to be planning for drastic changes at the company on everything from leadership to what users can and cannot tweet out. elon musk tweeted, quote, the bird is freed hours after the "associated press" reported he

had taken control of twitter. the billionaire tesla and spacex ceo is also said to have fired multiple top executives including its ceo, chief financial officer and chief legal counsel. twitter has not responded to a request for comment from cbs news. >> everything is incredibly uncertain right now. i believe that a musk-owned twitter would mean he would start to implement a lot of the changes to the platform. >> reporter: wednesday musk, whose new twitter description says chief twit, brought a sink to the san francisco headquarters and joked "let that sink in." the following day he was tweeting an open letter to advertisers that he envisions the social media platform as a digital town square where a wide range of beliefs can be debated. but adding it, quote, cannot become a free-for-all hell scape. musk's takeover has triggered uncertainty among some twitter users.

>> elon musk buying twitter and owning twitter will be the end of twitter. >> i've seen obviously people commenting whether they're going to continue using it or not. i haven't thought about it. >> reporter: musk's $44 billion bid to buy twitter began back in april and faced numerous setbacks with musk at one point claiming he was going to pull out of the acquisition. a judge in delaware had set a deadline of today for the parties to close the deal or else go to trial. elon musk has not issued an update on the statement he made earlier in the year claiming he would reverse twitter's permanent ban on former president donald trump. trump was shut out of twitter, facebook, and instagram following the january 6th capitol riot. he has since launched his own social media platform, truth social. >> naomi ruchim in new york. thank you. also breaking overnight, police in oklahoma say that they are investigating the discovery of eight people found dead in a burning house as a homicide

case. the fire was reported yesterday in a residential area of broken arrow, about 13 miles southeast of tulsa. police say witnesses told them a family of eight lived in the house. two adults and six children. >> this is a shock to broken arrow. it's a safe city. broken arrow doesn't have this kind of situation every day. >> police said even though the deaths are being investigated as homicides, they do not think there's a threat to the public. north korea has fired more ballistic missiles this morning, according to the south korean military. officials in seoul say two missiles were fired off north korea's east coast into the sea. this is the latest in a series of weapons tests by north korea in recent weeks. it comes as south korea wraps up annual military exercises that included u.s. troops this year. the two allies will begin large-scale air force drills next week. with 11 days to go before

the midterm elections, americans are showing up to vote. the u.s. elections project says nearly 16 million people have already cast a ballot either in person or by mail. there are new warning signs for democrats who hold control of congress. skyler henry explains. >> reporter: caught on a hot mic in new york, senate majority leader chuck schumer gave president biden a rundown on several battleground states. walker, the republican senate candidate in georgia with a strong anti-abortion stance faces allegations that he paid for two abortions. he denies both claims. >> i can tell you right now they can't take me down because i'm a bad man. >> reporter: while abortion became a major issue after the supreme court overturned roe v. wade, the economy remains the top priority.

a recent cbs news poll found 65% of registered voters said the economy is getting worse. and 45% said president biden is responsible for economic conditions. >> great economic report today. >> reporter: new data showed the country's gdp grew at an annual rate of 2.6% from july to september. this after two straight quarters of contraction. democrats hope voters see the improvement. >> economic growth is up. the price of inflation is down. real numbers are up. >> reporter: republicans say it's too little, too late for the party in charge. >> what has happened through this white house and congress is they have declared war on people's pocketbooks. >> reporter: on friday, president biden heads to pennsylvania hoping to give a boost to john fetterman who's in a tight senate race with dr. mehmet oz. skyler henry, cbs news, washington. five months after a gunman shot and killed 19 children and two teachers at a texas elementary school, angry relatives of the victims confronted the state police

chief. yesterday during a meeting in austin they demanded that texas department of public safety director steve mccraw resign. he's in charge of dozens of state troopers who along with hundreds of other law enforcement officers, waited more than an hour before confronting and killing the shooter. parents called on him to make good on his earlier vow to step down if his department was found culpable. >> if you are a man of your word, then you would -- you would retire. listen, you can get irritated all you want. i lost my damn son. your anger is not going to match mine, mine. >> i can tell you this right now -- dps as an institution, okay, right now did not fail the community. >> mccraw said a criminal investigation into the police response would be finished by the end of the year. and prosecutors in new mexico are now in charge of the investigation into last year's deadly shooting on the set of the movie "rust." the santa fe county

sheriff's department said it submitted findings to the district attorney's office without recommendations on possible charges. cinematographer halyna hutchins was shot and killed when a gun alec baldwin was rehearsing with went off. baldwin said he did not pull the trigger and didn't know who put a live round in the weapon. a tennessee man who dragged a washington, d.c., police officer into the violent mob during the january 6th capitol riot was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison. the 43-year-old had earlier pleaded guilty to assaulting officer michael fanone. he grabbed the officer and yelled, "i've got one," before rioters beat and kicked him and shocked him with his own taser. the officer said that the incident gave him a heart attack and a traumatic brain injury. coming up, heroic actions. how a bus driver helped save passengers during a hijacking in new york city. later, rihanna drops a new single.

above the gumline than floss. for a cleaner, healthier mouth. listerine. feel the whoa! a new york city bus driver is being praised for his actions when a man hijacked a bus during the morning commute. police say the man displayed what appeared to be a real gun yesterday and demanded the driver take off. the driver waited long enough to allow about two dozen passengers to get off, and minutes later the driver jumped out of a window while the bus was still moving. the suspect climbed behind the wheel, but the bus crashed into a utility pole. he was arrested. the gun turned out to be fake. no one was seriously hurt. an app gave people in california an early warning about this week's earthquake, and a residential building in miami was cleared out. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the miami herald" reports the city of miami beach ordered residents of a 14-story condo tower to evacuate. it came after engineers noticed

structural damage to a beam in the garage. the 164-unit condo tower was built in 1971. engineers say that it should take about ten days to shore up the damaged beam, but it's not clear when residents will be allowed to return. last year you may recall a condo collapsed just a few miles away, killing 98 people. the "associated press" says there are warnings the largest volcano could erupt. it last erupted in 1984. officials say while an eruption is not imminent they're on alert after a recent spike in earthquakes at the summit. authorities say the volcano makes up 51% of the island's land mass, so a large portion could be affected by an eruption. and the "los angeles times" says an app provided an early warning to alert more than two million people during tuesday's bay area earthquake. the u.s. geological survey's shake alert app warned users

it will be easier to contact the irs for your taxes. if that's what you want to do. and costco is selling what it calls the largest puzzle. dan lieberman has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks diverged thursday with a mix of economic data. some upbeat results and a disappointing earnings report from facebook's parent company, meta. the dow was up 194. nasdaq down 178. s&p 500 was down 23 points. help is on the way at the internal revenue service. the bureau announced thursday that it had hired 4,000 new customer service representatives to help people get through on its jammed phone lines. the goal -- to add another 1,000 before the end of the year. the new hires are part of the irs improvement program tied to the inflation reduction act funding that was approved in august. auto prices have begun to
