this was not a random act. this was intentional. an intruder attacking house speaker nancy pelosi's husband at their home. >> we are seeing more and more high profile people being threatened or attacked. you think we can attribute that to social media. >> the suspect in the death of an oakland dentist not wanting to face consequences of a murder for hire plot taking his own life while in police custody. good evening. two very big stories we're following tonight. the suspect in the oakland murder for hire kills himself in his jail cell, and speaker nancy pelosi's husband attacked with a hammer inside of their san francisco home. paul pelosi is recovering tonight. he had skull surgery after he was badly injured in

the attacking this morning. nancy pelosi rushed back this morning. chopper 5 captured her as she touched down. with i know that paul pelosi was hit with that hammer multiple times. at least one of the blows was severe. he was taken to the area's only level one trauma center where doctors successfully treated a skull fracture. they expect him to make nga extrllfucaution considering his age. the attacker is also recovering in the hospital tonight after being tackled by police during the arrest. he's known in the castro as a pro-nudity activist, but he's also an avid conspiracy theorist posting videos saying the 2020 election was stolen and mocking the january 6th riot at the

capitol. >> the suspect violently assaulted mr. pelosi with the hammer. our officers immediately tackled him, disarmed him, and rendered medical aid. the motive is still being determined. >> the san francisco district attorney is expected to file multiple charges against him including attempted murder, burglary, and elder abuse. that suspect is no stranger to bay area politicians, having run ins with several over the years, including scott weiner. betty yu is live at speaker pelosi's house with more. >> reporter: just to give an idea of how things look at here at this hour, as you can see over my shoulder, there's a police cruiser parked right outside the pelosi home. tonight we're learning much more about the suspect arrested

in this violent attack. >> heartbroken. i've known paul for a long time. i was actually this past sunday at an event with him sitting next to each other having a nice conversation. he's just a lovely, wonderful person, and to just imagine the terror. >> reporter: state senator scott weiner says this is the direct result of toxic right wing rhetoric and incitement against the speaker and so many others. >> i get regular death threats and speaker pelosi gets even more. >> reporter: david depape was known as a pro-nudity activist. >> i believe he was protests against public nudity legislation we did in san francisco about a year ago. he was connected to a woman who was a very, very scary person.

security political figures like pelosi usually have, and why something like this probably shouldn't have happened. >> it really doesn't matter if it's a gated community, fortress, whatever it might be, there's always, in a situation with a dignitary, there's always an advanced team that goes to the house, do a survey of the house, and they look at security deficiencies. they do that, they make recommendations about how to fission them, and that's before they even would have the dignitary in the house. >> you can imagine more cameras added probably. and this has made national headlines. politicians from both sides of the aisle, republicans and democrats nationally and locally, having reacting to the news. >> this is despicable. there's no place in america. there's too much violence, political violence. too much hatred.

kill his long time girlfriend and stage it as a robbery. a murder for hire plot they say was motivated by money. >> our investigators with a lot of experience in investigating these type of events clearly felt there was something they needed to look deeper into. this did not seem to be the typical robbery related homicide. there seemed to be something off about the way in which it happened based on the initial look at the video. >> the doctor was gunned down in august on the way to a massage appointment. the crime caught on camera shocked the community and led to a public outcry about hate crimes targeting asian-americans. >> this is not a hate crime, this is a set up. >> the man helped police by turning over the surveillance video they say helped them crash the case. a man shot the doctor three times, all in five

others along the coast, and 70s 2349 santa clara valley including exactly 70 in san jose. mid-70s in the east bay. some warmer spots reaching into the mid-70s. not that warm for late october. mid-60s in san francisco and upper 60s for oakland and the east bay. 70s north of golden gate. as you go farther inland, more likely to reach the mid-7 others to upper 70s. temperatures from saturday so sunday won't change much. temperatures might be a couple degrees warmer sunday, but still very pleasant weather throughout the weekend. going to boo at the zoo in oakland, temperatures topping out in the upper 60s. the san francisco boo also doing their own boo at the zoo. low 60s in the city. and the all important trick or tweet forecast. low cloud cover and fog along the coast to make things spooky school. upper 50s

lots to do to celebrate halloween on a carless jfk promenade in san francisco's golden gate park. this is the halloween haunt on jfk. tonight there were a lot of free activities going on and carnival rides, haunted houses, a hay maze, and more. and if you like seeing the kids dressed up in the cute costumes, there were plenty of those. we talk about this a lot, but if it feels like the holiday season is starting earlier than ever, you're on to something. the ceo of american christmas warehouse says installations at retailers have gotten so complex, they can take weeks to set up meaning stores have to start putting them up before halloween. some say that retailers are responding to consumers who are starting their shopping early in part because of inflation. according to a survey from the national retail federation, 46% of consumers plan to start
