this was not a random act. this was intentional. an intruder attacking house speaker nancy pelosi's husband at their home. >> we are seeing more and more high profile people being threatened or attacked. you think we can attribute that to social media. >> the suspect in the death of an oakland dentist not wanting to face consequences of a murder for hire plot taking his own life while in police custody. good evening. two very big stories we're following tonight. the suspect in the oakland murder for hire kills himself in his jail cell, and speaker nancy pelosi's husband attacked with a hammer inside of their san francisco home. paul pelosi is recovering

tonight. he had skull surgery after he was badly injured in the attacking this morning. nancy pelosi rushed back this morning. chopper 5 captured her as she touched down. with i know that paul pelosi was hit with that hammer multiple times. at least one of the blows was severe. he was taken to the area's only level one trauma center where doctors successfully treated a skull fracture. they expect him to make a full recovery, but are taking extra caution considering his age. the attacker is also recovering in the hospital tonight after being tackled by police during the arrest. he's known in the castro as a pro-nudity activist, but he's also an avid conspiracy theorist posting videos saying the 2020 election

was stolen and mocking the january 6th riot at the capitol. >> the suspect violently assaulted mr. pelosi with the hammer. our officers immediately tackled him, disarmed him, and rendered medical aid. the motive is still being determined. >> the san francisco district attorney is expected to file multiple charges against him including attempted murder, burglary, and elder abuse. that suspect is no stranger to bay area politicians, having run ins with several over the years, including scott weiner. betty yu is live at speaker pelosi's house with more. >> reporter: just to give an idea of how things look at here at this hour, as you can see over my shoulder, there's a police cruiser parked right outside the pelosi home.

this is the other big breaking news story we've been following all day. a bizarre and deadly twist in the killing of prominent oakland dentist lily shu. the prime suspect, her own boyfriend, killed himself today just hours after being taken into custody. this video is some of the last footage we have of the man police say hired someone to kill his long time girlfriend and stage it as a robbery. a murder for hire plot they say was motivated by money. >> our investigators with a lot of experience in investigating these type of events clearly felt there was something they needed to look deeper into. this did not seem to be the typical robbery related homicide. there seemed to be something off about the way in which it happened based on the

initial look at the video. >> the doctor was gunned down in august on the way to a massage appointment. the crime caught on camera shocked the community and led to a public outcry about hate crimes targeting asian-americans. >> this is not a hate crime, this is a set up. >> the man helped police by turning over the surveillance video they say helped them crash the case. a man shot the doctor three times, all in five seconds. simon told investigators, the gunman never demanded or gave her time to hand over money. >> no warning, just push her to the ground and go. >> her boyfriend, who was driving the car when she was killed, was untouched? this is not a case about race. this is a case about greed. my hope is

70s. temperatures from saturday so sunday won't change much. temperatures might be a couple degrees warmer sunday, but still very pleasant weather throughout the weekend. going to boo at the zoo in oakland, temperatures topping out in the upper 60s. the san francisco boo also doing their own boo at the zoo. low 60s in the city. and the all important trick or tweet forecast. low cloud cover and fog along the coast to make things spooky school. upper 50s around the bay monday evening with 60s north inland. temperatures cooler as the rain chances arrive tuesday and wednesday. we're talking about scattered very light rain showers. it's not a guarantee of rain. rain chances only in the 40 to 50% range, but hopefully that offers hope of november offering much needed rainfall to the bay area.
