husband of house speaker nancy pelosi with a hammer will be charged today and arraigned tomorrow. sources say david depape allegedly had a bag full of zip ties when he broke into the home on friday. he also allegedly had a list of people he wanted to target. in some of her first comments since the attack, nancy pelosi said her husband paul continues to improve, but that her family is heartbroken and traumatized by the incident. jonathan vigliotti has more from san francisco. >> reporter: 82-year-old paul pelosi is recovering after surgery for a fractured skull. sources tell cbs news it could have been worse. pelosi held off the attack by asking the intruder to use the bathroom. that's when he called 911 for help. the suspect, 42-year-old david depape who had a history of spreading political conspiracy theories on line allegedly struck pelosi with a hammer before being tackled bipolice. sources say he was looking for nancy pelosi who was in washington at the time.

the violence comes as threats against politicians are at an all-time high and days before the midterm elections where some calls to get out the vote have taken direct aim at the speaker. on "face the nation," margaret brennan asked tom emmer, congressman and chairman of the national republican congressional committee, about a tweet he posted four days ago about him touting the second amendment, firing a gun with the hash tag #firepelosi. why is there a gun in a political ad at all? wouldn't a pink slip be more fitting if it's about firing her? >> exercising our second amendment rights have -- >> that's not a debate about the second amendment. that's not a debate on the second amendment. #firepelosi. >> reporter: he said there is no place for violence in our society, despite political leaders on both sides of the aisle calling for calm. elon musk, twitter's new owner who's been under fire hear how he'll fight misinformation, fanned the flames.

he re-tweeted then deleted an article by a con speartorial website that claimed the two men knew each other before the attack. and san francisco police have since gone on the record saying these two men did not know each other before the attack. they say there is no doubt this was a break-in. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, san francisco. on the heels of paul pelosi's attack, there are concerns about potential violence at polling places. with one week left until the midterms, candidates across the country are making their final push. a cbs news battleground tracker poll shows a majority of voters feel pessimistic about things in the u.s. today. debra alfarone is in washington with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. that pessimism, as you can imagine, is potentially fueling a change here in the balance of power here in washington, and it's tipping it toward republicans' favor according to our cbs news battleground tracker. >> i'm feeling good.

>> reporter: over the weekend, president biden sounded a note of optimism just days out from the midterm elections. a new cbs news poll shows a staggering 79% of americans believe things in america are out of control, and a majority of the people who feel that way say they'll vote for republican candidates. still, the latest cbs news battleground tracker gives the gop a slight edge to win control of the house, the senate is a statistical tossup. >> we are going to see not just a red wave but a red tsunami. >> reporter: more than 21 million americans have cast early ballots for the midterm elections according to the u.s. elections project. still, voter intimidation and also potential violence at polling places remain a concern. the department of homeland security and other agencies released a new domestic intelligent assessment friday that said extremists fueled by election falsehoods, quote, pose a heightened threat to midterms.

>> you have threats of harassment, intimidation, and violence against election officials, polling places and voters, let's be clear -- that has to stop. >> reporter: and seven in ten voters actually say that they expected to take a few days, maybe more than a week, to get those final election results. anne-marie? >> oh, boy. thank you. georgia republican governor brian kemp and democratic challenger stacey abrams met for their second and final debate before next week's election. the two leveled harsh attacks on each other yesterday including on the topic of abortion rights. abrams criticized kemp for not promising to sign further abortion restrictions in the state. in 2019 kemp signed a law banning most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy which went into effect this year. >> he has praised the texas bounty system that allows neighbors to make $10,000 by reporting on women.

killed more than 150 people. president yoon sul yeol visited a memorial altar for the victims today. police are investigating what caused the huge crowd to surge in a narrow alley on saturday during halloween festivities in a popular night life district in seoul. two american college students were among the dead, and one witness described what he saw. >> there's so many people -- and i turned around, and i told the crowd, you got to come this way. people are dying. >> south korean officials say most of the people killed were in their 20s and 30s. and at least 132 people are dead after a cable foot bridge collapsed in india plunging people into the river below. the 19th century bridge was packed with people celebrating holidays. it's not clear how many people were on the bridge, but officials fear the death toll could rise.

the bridge reopened last week after being closed for six months for renovations. authorities say that it gave way because it could not handle the number of people on it. president biden congratulated the new president-elect of brazil and said that he looks forward to continued cooperation between the two countries. former leftist president luiz inacio lula da silva defeated incumbent jair bolsonaro in a close reclaim. -- close race. he served as president of brazil from 2003 to 2010, but then was imprisoned for more than a year and a half after being convicted of corruption in 2018. the country's supreme court later overturned that conviction. he will be inaugurated on january 1st. coming up, concerns about the world's food supply. how the u.n. is trying to restore a grain deal with russia. and who will be the next billionaire? the powerball lottery jackpot grows once again. this is the "cbs morning news."

blockade of ukrainian ports cutting off urgently needed grain exports to the world. moscow suspended the earlier deal alleging that ukraine launched a drone attack against russia's black sea fleet off occupied crimea. ukraine denied it was behind that attack. president biden called the russian move outrageous. >> going to increase starvation, there's no reason for them to do that, but they are always looking for some rationale to say the reason they're doing something outrageous is because the west made them do it. and it's just -- it's just not -- there's no merit to what they're doing. >> russia has requested a meeting of the u.n. security council today. and the "associated press" says tonight's powerball jackpot has climbed to $1 billion. no one matched all six numbers saturday when the jackpot was $825 million. tonight's top prize will be the fifth largest in u.s. history. if a winner chooses to take the cash value, they'll get an estimated $497 million.
