federal reserve hikes interest rates, yet again.and we diggintothe race r californi the person in charge of our state's wallet. good afternoon, i am reed cowan, welcome to the 3:00 broadcast.capitol hill is on alert, days after the attack on the husband of house speaker nancy pelosi, and just days before election day, kpix 5's anne makovec joins me with the preparations for voters and elected officials. >> yeah, it's a scary time to be in politics .capitol police say they are monitoring, right now, thousands of cases , nationwide, as we take a live look at the u.s. capitol . they are also coordinating with local and state agencies. >> helicopters flew mac low over the u.s. capitol, for a security exercise just six days ahead of midterm elections. capitol police chief, tom manger, calling for more

security resources to protect lawmakers, citing today's political climate. >> demonizing rhetoric, false claims of election fraud, paired with calls for action against other parties' individuals are combined to cause real harms. >> shannon, tracks political violence, as the head of bridging divides initiative at princeton university.she says, despite concerning rhetoric, people should feel safe going to vote. >> it is a period of heightened tensions, but there are poll workers, administrators, community groups, who have been able to prepare a long time for this day. >> a federal intelligence bulletin warned that domestic violence extremists across the ideological spectrum impose a heightened threat to the midterms and beyond election day. though there are no specific threats currently. cbs news has confirmed the break-in at nancy pelosi's san francisco home. capitol officers monitoring high

interest locations.suspect david depape accused of assaulting the house be girl's husband , paul pelosi, has not pleaded guilty . prosecutors say he had a list of politicians he was targeting. now, depape is being held without bail. if he ever does get out is barred from contacting the pelosi family or coming within 150 yards of their home.he is due back in court on friday, when the judge is expected to set a date for his preliminary hearing, sense of them. >> thank you. the attack has local officials increasing their own security. mayor london breed says she's already made some changes. >> i have had a number of death threats. i have had you know, someone show up with protesters, with a pitchfork in front of my home. and you know, others who have been very aggressive, so yeah. i'm definitely concerned. >> well we will continue to follow all the latest

developments in the attack on paul pelosi, here on kpix 5, streaming on cbs news bay area, and online at kpix.com. other top bay area stories, now, in santa clara. a tesla was hit by a train, this morning. chopper 5 was over the area of martin avenue as crews were looking into that rash. so far we do not have an update for you on the condition of the tesla driver. a pedestrian hit and killed in san jose. a man was crossing the street at cherry expressway when he was hit . he was rushed to hospital but later died from his injuries. the driver stating cooperated with officers, and they say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash. if you are keeping track this is the 30th industry and fatality in san jose this year. >> we have eclipsed with a pedestrian death reclassified last week to i believe over a 20-year high where we haven't had this many pedestrian deaths in our city.

>> that is the sergeant dealing with, looking for solutions in our community. he cites distracted driving as a potential reason for the spike.the police department he also says is critically understaffed. let's talk interest rates. do we want to? they are climbing higher, i can.that's another move by the federal reserve to ease inflation. benchmark rates are being raised three quarters of a percentage point, it is the sixth increase of the year to try and cool off the economy. the fed's ultimate goal is to see the current inflation rate of 8% come down to 2%. economist predict they will continue raising rates. that idea sparked a selloff on wall street, today. the dallas 505 points. the nasdaq fell, 366. the s&p 500, down 96.

controller, the person in charge of our state's money, this is not usually a high profile race, but this year for state auditor could be important. if lonnie chen defeats chair melia cohen, he would be the first republican to win a state office since governor arnold schwarzenegger and his reelection in 2006. >> the state of company collected nearly $250 billion in tax revenue last year including at the pump. chen believes a lot of that is wasted by agencies led by democrats and says it's his mission to change how your money is watched and spent. even in the bread aisle at the grocery store, lonnie chen is keenly aware of rising prices. it's not inflation he is zeroing in on it, but rather, wasted tax dollars in the tens of billions of dollars. >> where is the money going in our state ? restoring confidence in somebody actually watching out for them versus just kind of spending the money without any effort at restoring

accountability or demanding results. >> he is a long-term policy expert who was taught at stanford university answered on the social security advisory board under the obama administration. but he's running for political office for the first time. >> people let you into their lives, their homes, talking about tough times they are having with gas prices. or when kids ' schools aren't better, or how can they afford to get a house? this race is the one state-wide race that has a chance at being competitive. >> political professor at san diego, leading up to the general election, he says there is a stark difference in what chan and cohen are talking about. >> she is really going to focus on the court issues made evading democrats this year, abortion rights, donald trump >> esncerbo for exe e former prenvewhhaed nu6t an n. t thin

of the function of the controller's job right now as we speak, as i sit on the board of equalization. so i think the choice is pretty clear. >> let's get straight to the gas tax, shall we? your opponent wants to audit the gas tax. where do you stand on that? >> oh yeah, i am auditing any tax dollars spending is reasonable and suddenly falls within the scope of the state-controller. saying you will call an audit is not new, you supposed to do that. >> before we go it's no secret how much money has been put into each campaign your opponent certainly has put in a number of dollars into this good is not going to make a difference? is that going to change things? where do you stand on that in terms of how much money has been poured into this race? >> good question. california has a history of rejecting the wealthiest of the wealthy that poor in personal money into their campaigns. i am a little

. showers were quiet down to the rest of this evening. it will be chilly overnight, even a frost advisory in the north bay valleys. a dry break will continue on friday with the unsettled pattern, chances return by late saturday, saturday night into sunday, but continuing through the first half of next week. we still have showers out there right now. let's take a look on first alert doppler. we have a lightning strike to the west of santa rosa. y have seen a couple of those today, very small reports of hail from these thunderstorms. we have such cold temperatures in the upper level of the atmosphere. all the weather is moving west to east, and we had a faint rainbow . a few more showers towards eastern contra costa county, and a few showers for alameda county into santa clara county, mainly in the higher elevations of the mt. diablo and santa cruz range. we will see a few showers possible for the next few hours, but in general, things are going to be

quieting down once we get past sunset. future forecast showing central valley activity diminishing further into tonight. but, the long-range forecast still favors what are than normal conditions for much of the western u.s. and it has a bull's-eye close to the area over the central sierra as we head towards election day, and the several days after that. let's add up that ring with our forecast models. we'll focus on the american model first, sang next week we could pick up half an inch up to an inch and a quarter. the european forecast model is much more optimistic than that saying there is potential for three quarters of an inch to potentially two inches of rainfall. these models have averse to places, the dry one was what yesterday, the wet one was dry, yesterday. they will converge on a solution closer to next week. there's going to be more snow falling in the high sierra as well. right now there is that shower in the distance, temperatures are cool, only

mid to upper 50s to around 60 degrees. and it will be chilly tonight as temperatures in the north bay drop-down close to freezing well the rest of us will be in the upper 30s and low to mid 40s. but that's cold enough for a frost advisory, with temperatures getting close to freezing. make sure animals have a warm place to shelter, and cover up vegetation you don't want to lose, for the season. we are slightly warmer for today. upper 50s along the coast, near 60 down the peninsula, right around 60 in the santa clara valley, not too warm compared to other bay area parts. high temperatures around the bay, right around 60, with low to mid 60s inland, in the north bay, till you go farther inward. saturday , once that next rain chance arrives during the daylight hours, the better chance will be saturday night into sunday, with the most wet day arriving on monday, the most widespread and heaviest rain settling in for the next

we know emergency dispatchers are important servants in our community, but they also have to have nerves of steel to get people to help they need and fast. but imagine doing that job, picking up the phone, and then hearing this on the other line. >> mama, please hurry she's got a gun. >> give me a description. >> she's got -- >> you are in the freezer? >> fear in those voices, terry clark was working her job as an assistant in new orleans when her own daughter placed that desperate call for help, 16-year-old tanaya was working at mcdonald's when a woman locked her in the freezer and

robbed the place. she was able to provide her critical information to get police on the scene, then she whisked over there, herself. >> i broke down when my child said we are in the freezer. and i said, in the freezer? i was taking the call , tears coming down my face, but i am still trying to do my job. and i did my job to the best of my ability. >> yes, she did. in fact she was back at work the next day.t supposed to be off by the time that call came in, but she decided to stay to serve her community to help out her coworkers who need it. lots of hugs, th
