silicon valley did a really slick company of making it seem like an industry that cared about workers. now at 11:00, mass lay offs looming just hours away with elon musk at the head of twitter. tonight twitter employees playing the waiting game because, in just a few hours, thousands could learn they're out of a job. the company-wide e-mail warned twitter employees they'd be notified by noon tomorrow if they still have a job. it says those staying will get a work e-mail. those that get laid off will get a note in their personal e-mail. twitter has about 7500 workers. musk is expected to lay off half of them. twitter employees also

told not to come into the office tomorrow, and the company is taking it a step further by suspending badge access to the san francisco headquarters. >> silicon valley has often painted itself as a new and hip industry that cares about workers, but it really looks like any other industry. it will cut worker jobs to maximize profits. the workers are largely up to the whims of whoever is in control of the company. >> it seems like the san francisco mayor london breed is seizing the moment tweeting this. with talks of lay offs, including at companies like twitter, a reminder the city and county of san francisco is hiring. with over 4500 vacancies, we're ready to help people sign up. and of course this is happening basically all over silicon valley, not just at twitter. lyft is laying off

13% of its staff. open door the tech company is laying off 18% of their staff. stripe cutting 14% of its work force, and chime is slashing 12%. >> there's been an increasing number of companies that have announced hiring freezes in addition to other cuts to try to bring expenses down. >> apple and amazon are taking a slightly different route. they are implementing corporate hiring freezes. all of these bleak economic headlines are coming ahead of the october jobs report that will be out in just a few hours. it's the last major read of the economy before the midterms. a strange twist in the alameda county district attorney's office. tonight candidate pamela price says one of her campaign volunteers was involved in an incident with a gun. she released a statement

saying in part, i hope that anyone who was injured in this incident makes a full recovery, adding ending gun violence in alameda county will remain one of my top priorities to protect public safety. i was unaware of the incident until i saw the tweet online. we still haven't confirmed exactly who was involved or what happened, but we reached out polfor more information. today, former santa clara sheriff lori smith was found guilty in her corruption and misconduct trial after abruptly quitting on monday. >> this civil jury found unanimously beyond a reasonable doubt that all of those allegations were true, and the result of that will be that the sheriff will be removed from office. >> so the jury found that significant mismanaged jails, traded concealed weapons permits for campaign contributions, and lied on campaign finance forms. smith did not comment today. >> we are gratified that the jury considered all of the

remembering the mystery surrounding a car buried deep in the backyard of an atherton mansion? well, apparently it's open. it was found last month at the home buried five feet underground. now, investigators thought it might have had a body inside at some point, but investigators think now that john lu, the former homeowner, buried his car to commit insurance fraud. they say in the early 90s, he reported the car stolen and filed an insurance claim. he's since passed away. we were all ready for another very tough fire season,

but the santa rosa fire department is considering ending fire season next week. andrea nakano has more. >> reporter: this community was destroyed by the tubbs fire in 2017. many here point to that fire as the one that forever changed this community. this looks like a new housing development. that's because the tubbs fire in a matter of hours burned down every single home in the neighborhood. >> we went to work that night not knowing the fire would destroy our homes. >> reporter: this is what paul's home looked like before the fire. this is what he came home to. the only recognizable thing left on his property was the frame of his new truck. he's the santa rosa fire marshal and was working to alert residents about evacuations that october night. he then started hearing the fire was approaching the streets in his neighborhood. >> we diverted to this general

location and could tell the neighborhood was completely destroyed. >> reporter: while the community still feels the devastation of the destruction five years ago, the tubbs fire forever changed how residents protect their homes by creating defensive space. the fire department also changed how they respond by sending more resources and using technology to spot fires sooner. >> we've had fires this season, but they were actually being controlled, not only by how we respond to the incidents, but the measures residents have put in place. >> reporter: mother may which you are also played a role. we didn't see the winds in normally come in september and october, and with rain in the forecast, fire season may come to an early end. while communities avoided devastating fires this year, firefighters say with climate change, they never know what next year will
