campaign push four days before the midterm elections that will decide when party controls congress. president biden and former president donald trump held dueling rallies yesterday stumping for candidates. mr. biden again warned about the threat to democracy posed by election deniers. trump continued to insist that he won the 2020 election while suggesting he'll run again. debra alfarone is in washington with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. sounds like deja vu all over again, but it may be tough to even believe that there are some undecided voters out there. but really that's what both sides are banking on. and really what they want is to have their messages push voters who are thinking of sitting this out to turn up on tuesday. last night, former president donald trump again hinted at another presidential run while campaigning for gop candidates in iowa. >> i will very, very, very probably do it again, okay. >> reporter: he also repeated

false claims about the 2020 presidential election and urged his followers to monitor the polls next week. >> if you care about election integrity, volunteers and election worker poll watcher or poll challenger, we need you. >> they're going after your right to vote. >> reporter: president biden took his message that democracy is on the ballot to new mexico and california. >> we're going into an election. and you have all these people saying they don't accept the outcome of the last one, and they are not guaranteeing they'll accept the outcome of this one. >> reporter: across the country state election officials are trying to reassure voters that next week's results will be accurate, while they're also urging patience because those results may not be final right away. >> when we put those tallies up, rowe we need them to believe in it. they can't have a doubt. and -- because if they do, our republic gets fallen. >> reporter: there will be

dueling rallies in pennsylvania tomorrow with president biden and former president obama on one side of the state and former president trump on the other. speaking of pennsylvania, both senate candidates will be holding events today, and there is a new maris poll out this clocks democrat john fetterman a six-point lead over republican senate hopeful mehmet oz. the balance of power here in washington may very well come down to that race. anne-marie? >> lot of eyes on pennsylvania. debra alfarone in washington. thank you. breaking overnight, brooklyn nets star kyrie irving is now apologizing for tweeting a link to an anti-semitic documentary hours after the team suspended him for at least five games without pay. last night irving wrote on instagram, "to all jewish families and communities that are hurt and affected from my post, i'm deeply sorry to have caused you pain, and i apologize. i initially reacted out of emotion to being unjustly labeled anti-semitic. instead of focusing on the healing process of my jewish brothers and sisters that were

hurt from the hateful remarks made in the documentary." the nets suspended irving after he met with reporters yesterday and again refused to apologize for posting the link last week. the nets said that he was, quote, currently unfit to be associated with the team. earlier this week the nets and irving said that they would each donate $500,000 to anti-hate groups. and the fbi is warning of a credible broad threat to synagogues in new jersey. a law enforcement official told the "associated press" the online threat did not target a specific synagogue by name. the fbi urged synagogues to take security precautions. after the alert was issued, some police departments sent extra officers to guard houses of worship. >> stay alert. be vigilant, and never hesitate calling law enforcement if there's something that is concerning to you. >> the fbi's investigating the source of the threat and promising to release more information at the appropriate time.

twitter is telling its thousands of workers that it will start laying off today. that's according to several news outlets including "the new york times." in a reported email to staff, twitter said that its offices would be temporarily closed today and layoffs would begin. the message also apparently said the action is, quote, unfortunately necessary to ensure the company's success moving forward. it comes a little more than a week after elon musk completed a $44 billion deal to buy twitter. he immediately fired the chief executive and other top managers. house speaker nancy pelosi says her husband is out of the hospital and is back home. 82-year-old paul pelosi was attacked last friday by a man with a hammer in the couple's san francisco home. he suffered a fractured skull and other injuries. nancy pelosi said her husband continues to progress on a long recovery process. meanwhile, federal authorities say the canadian man accused of

attacking paul pelosi, david depape, may have been in the u.s. illegally. the department of homeland security said depape may have overstayed his authorized entry into the country in 2008. cases of rsv are up across the nation, but the fda is sounding the alarm about a shortage of medicine that's used to help treat the virus. here's roxana saberi. >> reporter: when kate brown tried to get the antibiotic amoxicillin for her 10-year-old daughter's ear infection, she was shocked to learn she couldn't. >> i get to the pharmacy and they said, i'm sorry, we don't have any amoxicillin. really nobody does. we'll have to switch her medication. i was nervous putting her on something she hadn't been on before. >> reporter: fortunately an alternative was available. >> i'm thankful, but i'm kind of nervous. like at what point are we going to run out of the other options?

>> reporter: antibiotics aren't used to treat viruses but aron prescribed to treat viruses like rsv or the flu. cases of both viruses continue to rise nationwide. 11 states plus new york city and washington, d.c., are seeing high flu levels. why are you seeing a shortage of amoxicillin? >> they're getting an ear infection or pneumonia with that. >> reporter: cbs news reached out to the largest pharmacy chains. cvs stated, "we are working with manufacturers to replenish supply as quickly as possible." and walgreens said it is still able to meet patients' needs at this time. should parents be concerned? >> parents shouldn't be concerned because luckily we have many different antibiotics to use. we have choices, but i mean, for all intents and purposes we would like more amoxicillin on the market. >> reporter: parents can with pediatricians if there are alternate medicines. we reached out to the five companies that produce the drug.

two responded saying they're looking at ways to make more. roxana saberi, cbs news, new york. diplomats from the u.s. embassy in moscow met with jailed wnba star brittney griner for the first time in months. yesterday's visit comes a week after a russian court rejected griner's appeal of her nine-year prison sentence for drug possession. she was arrested at a moscow airport in february after russian ministers said they found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. they said the u.s. saw firsthand her tenacity and perseverance. highway drama. a stolen truck catches fire dring a low-speed chase in california. we'll shou you -- we'll show you how it ended. and later, a final gift. a new music video featuring the late leslie jordan and his country music friends is released overnight. this is the "cbs morning news."

the driver of a stolen big rig is in custody after a fiery slow-speed chase in southern california. the truck traveled around ten miles an hour with police following. the driver went over a spike strip on the road, kept on going. one of the front tires then fell off, but that didn't stop him. eventually it sparked a massive fire forcing the driver to jump out of the burning truck and surrender. holiday shopping may slow down this year, and pakistan's former prime minister is recovering after being shot. those are some of the headlines. "the new york times" reports imran khan was wounded leading an anti-government protest convoy. it happened yesterday as the 70-year-old was standing with others on top of a truck as it slowly moved through a crowd. one person was killed and nine others hurt. khan was ousted from power in april after a falling out with the country's military

leaders. the white house strongly condemned the attack, and a suspect was arrested. the "associated press" says holiday shopping is expected to cool down a bit. the national retail federation predicts there will be up to an 8% sales growth during the holiday season this year. that's down from last year's more than 13% growth when americans ramped up spending during the pandemic. some shoppers are already out looking for deals in spite of the inflation. >> you want to find a better bargain. you want to be able to get just the right thing. >> the national retail federation predicts sales in november and december will total $950 billion. and as we get ready to resume standard time and move those clocks back an hour this weekend, "reuters" says congress is split on whether we should stop that practice. the senate unanimously passed a measure earlier this year to make daylight saving time permanent, but it stalled in the house. legislative aides told "reuters"

sports fans in philly still had a reason to cheer. they could cheer for the eagles. the only undefeated team in the nfl. they improved to 8-0 for the first time in franchise history after beating the houston texans last night. quarterback jalen hurts passed for 243 yards and two touchdowns. the final was 29-17. lyft is handing out hundreds of pink slips, and miller light is selling a special christmas tree stand for your next kegger. dan lieberman has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks fell thursday after another volatile trading session reflecting investors' unease over the federal reserve's intent to keep raising interest rates. the dow was down 146. nasdaq lost 181. s&p 500 was down 39 points. a newly combined covid and flu vaccine is being tested by drugmakers. pfizer and biontech launching a phase-one trial. the study participants received their first doses this week.
