overall jobs picture going with that. let's drill down a little bit. joining me live now is michael bernick . first of all, let's start with the tech layoffs and hiring freezes we are hearing about at some major companies. what does that spell out for a very tech based future? >> well even in good times, reed, this is a highly volatile industry , tech, and we've had layoffs. the layoffs we have seen in the last couple weeks, not only at twitter, but also at strike and lyft, and slowdowns at google, do show a greater slowdown in the industry. but i think the important thing this morning is, if you look at the national numbers, the national numbers and the california numbers, the economy does remain strong. so we gained over 260,000 jobs, nationwide , just in the past month, and unemployment went up slightly from 2.5% to 3.7%. but by historic measures it's

very low. >> we talked about that job growth , but where does that leave us going into next year? >> we are certainly not seeing a drop, dramatic drop in employment. we are seeing a slowdown in terms of the pace of job growth , 261,000 jobs is below the numbers that we have been averaging over the previous 12 months, so we will see a slowdown. both nationwide and here in california. but the economy is going to drop out. i would say with the tech industry we will be seeing layoffs, but this is still a highly resilient industry, and one that's gone through a lot of volatility beforehand. >> we thank you for joining us today during this broadcast, with your thoughts on our neighbors and those who have lost their jobs. michael, thank you. speaking of jobs, driverless cars are going around at night. our shawn

before stronger storm system brings in rain and gusty winds by sunday night into monday. let's take a look at futurecast as we make our way to the weekend. futurecast trying to squeeze out some rain towards midday, but the actual shower activity is going to be moving into the northbay around lunchtime, dropping north to south, towards the golden gate i made late afternoon and progressing further south, into the santa clara valley and across the east bay as we head into the evening and overnight hours. now, this is all going to shut down by about midnight, tomorrow night. and then we get that dry break for most of the day on sunday. that's good news for the golden gate half marathon. sunday plans are looking good at this point. we will keep you updated, but there is that more substantial area of rain dropping down towards us, and it will be here by sunday night into monday. so let's add up the rain through the middle of next week. we are talking about a substantial amount for this time of year, anywhere from three quarters of an inch

to potentially 1 1/2 inches. these numbers will undoubtedly change, no model has a perfect snapshot of what's going to happen, but it's a nice round of arrangement which is exactly what we need. and it's exactly what they need in the high sierra, anywhere from 2-4 feet of snow over the next few days. keep that in mind for travel plans if you will be on i-80 or on u.s. 50. oakland is the cool spot at 59 degrees, everybody else in the low to mid 60s. we'll drop down to the upper 40s and 50s overnight. weather the past several nights, because we are going to have that blanket of clouds, maybe not a solid blanket, a few holes here and there, but enough to keep the warmth near ground level, at least some warmth. temperatures are going to warm up to the low to mid 60s. still about a 3-5 degrees cooler, but then the rain will settle down. around the south end of the bay commitment 60s for most, and the santa

clara valley . temperatures in linden east bay reaching up to the low to mid 60s, before that rain arrives, likely by late afternoon for this part of the bay area. earlier near the golden gate and for the northbay, your temperatures don't have as much time to warm up. low to mid 60s around the bay. temperatures further north also limited to around 60 at best for those highs tomorrow, before the rain rolls in. again, most of sunday looks dry. rain chances move back in sunday evening and sunday night, and there is a rainy pattern monday and tuesday. i going to be an all-day washout , then a break in the action wednesday and thursday before another chance of showers heads our way on friday. a lot of questions about that. long-range models says it's a good chance of rain, others keep us dry. reed? >> thank you. if powerball fever was not enough already, ahead, the news
