like high taxes, gas prices, and the homeless crisis. now these grievances could be a potential benefit for republicans. there's an all-out effort to get out to vote on the campaign trail. from florida to pennsylvania. >> it's a choice, a choice between two vastly different visions of america. >> reporter: the truth and facts and logic and reason and basic decency are on the ballot. >> if you want to stop the destruction of our country and save the american dream, then this tuesday you must vote republican in a giant red way. >> reporter: pennsylvania and georgia are among the five tossup races that could decide control of the u.s. senate. >> the california voter who is sort of trying to figure out why this is relevant. well california matters one because it's where the money is. two

it's where they are. and everything that plays out in the rest of the eastern part of the united states is, you know, multiplied here because there are more americans in california than any other state in the country. >> reporter: james taylor is a political science professor at the university of san francisco. >> the republicans have targeted california like they did with gavin newsom's recall. they targeted orange county and a number of other southern california districts in that region. hoping they could actually be the balance that leads to the house being captured by the republican party. >> reporter: we asked bay area voters about their top concerns. >> my big issue is the student loan forgiveness. >> i don't know, stuff is getting really expensive. >> crime, you know, the level of crime we're seeing in our area, you know, it's sad. that's my biggest concern. more than the economy or anything else. >> reporter: many voters are also worried about democracy

itself. frustrated and distrusting of the political system. >> and big changes are coming to both oakland and san jose. both cities have two-term mayors who are leaving office after eight years. in san jose the race is between santa clara county supervisor cindy chavez and matt mahan. county supervisor sinty chavez is a seasoned politician with nearly two decades of government service under her belt. matt mahan is a relative newcomer to politics, right in the middle of his first term on the council. >> the city of san jose is the 10th largest in the country. and i am running for mayor because i won't be learning on the job. >> voters are looking for a change in direction. they want to know what we're going to do differently. >> the current mayor sam liccardo. and now the race to replace

the top four candidates today. >> reporter: door knocking, shaking hands. >> are you running for mayor? >> reporter: passing out campaign flyers, connecting with voters. each candidate putting mileage on those walking shoes today as they canvassed neighborhoods to solicit votes. >> thank you for voting. we'll let you be on your way. >> reporter: the top four candidates say they are focused on crime and homelessness. loren taylor formed an alliance. ignacio de la fuente is an old school democrat who is coming out of retirement. and councilwoman sheng thao is considered the progressive candidate. >> i'm the unity candidate in the sense that i have the strong support of my council colleagues. >> reporter: councilwoman thao will focus on intion make sure police have the resources to fight crime. >> we need a change. people are dying for a change. so therefore i am the change agent. >> reporter: councilman taylor says his track record of

getting things done is why people should vote for him. >> thank you for the support. i look forward to representing you. >> making progress instead of playing progressive politics. >> reporter: he says on top of more resources for the youth, he'll hire more cops to address the violence. >> voting for loren taylor number one will ensure that oakland does move forward addressing our tough challenges. >> reporter: council member reid says all the other candidates can talk about crime, but her personal experience is why she's dedicated to fighting crime. >> public safety comes from just a deeply personal place. da lin, we lost our son, brandon, to gun violence 2013 halloween night. long before i came on city council, i've been fighting to keep other people's children safe. >> reporter: she'll work with the community and the police. >> we've been at multiple churches this morning with a big push for souls to the poles with a lot of our faith leaders here. >> ignacio de la fuente running for mayor. >> reporter: former council president, de la fuente, says he's tired of the shootings and the lawlessness in oakland,

become a bigger part of the story for monday afternoon and for tuesday morning. but for right now, it's the leading edge with the steady rain that's moving through. the north bay, you've seen the cold front come through. santa rosa, petaluma, we will be coming for a close up look. that's probably some of the more impressive rain of the night for petaluma, santa rosa, you've seen it clear. so let's track this now because that line, beautifully outlined in first alert doppler, also picked up in futurecast. you've got to love it because now we have a pretty good idea of what happens next. that line will continue to march their way south. by midnight, it's over the heart of the bay. by the time we would get to 2:00, 3:00 in the morning, it's clear. when we wake up tomorrow, most of this part of the storm is done. then we'll get into the afternoon with scattered isolated showers. some of those will be thunderstorms tomorrow. we're going to look at that because that will become a bigger part of the problem on tuesday. and the complete forecast coming up in a few

minutes. back to you. >> thanks. we should hear new things about the discovery of the remains. the east bay woman who has been missing for several months. the 24-year-old disappeared in january after visiting the antioch home of her ex-boyfriend marshall curtis jones, who died during a shootout with washington state police in june as they tried to arrest him. gabe's remains were found thursday in plymouth, east of sacramento. an area the jones had traveled to after she disappeared. the police have scheduled a press conference for tomorrow morning. first twitter slashes thousands of jobs from its work force. now facebook's parent company, meta, is about to do the same. the wall street journal reports meta is preparing to announce thousands of layoffs as early as wednesday. facebook employees have already been told to cancel any non-essential travel starting this week. the job cuts are being blamed on meta stock sliding 70%. and elon musk says twitter

will permanently suspend anyone who impersonates another account on the platform. and to keep from being suspended, users will have to declare the impersonation a parody. dead on cue, kathy griffin's account was suspended after she changed her display name and photo to elon musk and mocked the new ceo. and now problems for apple. if you're hoping to get your hands on apple's new iphone pro or pro max, don't expect one any time soon. covid restrictions at an assembly plant in china have reduced production, leading to shipment delays. that means longer wait times for customers who are wanting those phones. officials say they are working with their suppliers, hoping to return to normal production while making sure workers are kept safe. and still ahead on kpix 5, news at 11:00, tracking the storms. the snow that has hit the sierra. we have road warnings from cal trans coming up

week ago. so the rain in the valley and the snow in the sierra welcomed weather for neighbors though it comes with it dangers. the first snowfall of the season. shut down california roadways. tuesday afternoon drivers traveling along i-80 felt the affects of sierra snow. >> be patient. you can't be in a hurry. >> just be okay with 25 miles an hour. >> reporter: angela sneed, her sister, and their new puppy, driving from roseville towards reno. >> this is her first snow. >> reporter: made a pit stop in nyack. >> a full tank of gas, a case of water, and a couple packages of beef jerky. >> reporter: just moments after their family refueled, cal trans closed i-80. after spinouts caused chaos along the roadway. >> when we have chain controls in effect right now on 80 and 50, the speed limit is greatly reduced. on 80 the speed limit is 30 miles per hour. and on 50 it's 25 miles per hour. this

take it slow. as a meteorologist and one who will have a lot of experience in the yosemite, did you ever get caught in the snow? >> i could think of a couple, sure. you know for the ones that come to mind first is trying to get over highway 50 in the sierra there and that stop between the bridges. in the story they were saying hey, you only need to go 30 miles an hour. you'll be lucky to go at all by the time we would get into tomorrow afternoon and tuesday. that's how much snow is coming to the sierra. i want to start with that. let's take a look at the mountains and start filling it in with the accumulated snow. starting now, the gorgeous pictures of what's already falling. just getting started. the snow levels will get down to about 4,000 feet and that is very good for the sierra storm. but it also means a good stretch of that drive on 80 and 50. you'll be in the snow from the pines on 50 and then probably from, you know, 15 minutes before you would get to blue canyon, going all the way up the rest of the drive. it will be snowing. it will be a rough drive and fittingly the national weather service will have us under a winter storm

warning there. doesn't expire until 4:00 a.m. on wednesday. travel will be difficult. travel will be non-existent at times up there over the next two days. so plan accordingly if you need to be up there. let's come back home for our side of this. we would a this at the top of the newscast. we're already getting our rain. the leading edge with the cold front has gone through sonoma county. it is just about to get down into southern marin as we checked down on petaluma a few minutes ago. you can see the line of rain having to come down right through town and where some of the best rain is now. and in santa rosa, you are already seeing the back edge of this. you've got your rain. now that line right there, it's just going to keep working their way south overnight. we'll probably get a quarter of an inch of rain from that between now and about 5:00 a.m. then we'll get into a little bit of a break. tomorrow morning when you wake up, streets will be slick, but you won't be getting a whole lot of rain during the morning commute. then we get into the afternoon and you'll see what

will come back. isolated showers and thunderstorms. this is the way to go through monday and there will be more time on monday when you're not getting rained on when you are, but if you happen to get one of those cells that will develop over you, a brief downpour like that one. a couple coming over the city of the east bay. they will see cay them sporadic and that is the most impressive part of the whole storm on tuesday morning in the predawn hours. that's the large complex of heavier cells of rain. so we're all going to have quite a show for tuesday morning and it is the kind of thing like this right here at 4:00 a.m. and where we probably will get woken up by thunder in the distance or maybe not so far off and maybe it will be in that neighborhood. but right here is where we will get some of the best rain from the whole storm. that will probably linger into a part of our tuesday morning commute. then into tuesday afternoon, the thunderstorms will be more numerous. tuesday should be more active than monday. we're not done until we would get into wednesday. it's not often that the bay area will get included in the storm

prediction center and the convective outlook where they say you should be aware of thunderstorms as the potential and we're included in that. not that they will be severe. but get our attention about an inch and a quarter coming our way. and the big picture will show you the size of the storm and why it will take a little while for all of this to clear through, but it will. in the seven-day forecast by the time we would get to wednesday afternoon, we're done. thursday and friday we clear out the other system coming out on saturday. it's not impressive that one on saturday. but we will at this point, there's rain in the forecast for the first part of next weekend. but more important issue, it might be to discuss how cold we will be here and the daytime highs in the mid-50s. the morning lows by thursday and friday, getting well down into the low to mid-30s. all right, guys, back over to you. >> all right, thanks. still ahead at 11:00, a mountain lion feasting in a bay area backyard, and it isn't the first time. and since we're on the theme, a california woman bitten by a shark lives to tell the tale. we've got her story when we come back.

another mountain lion sighting in san jose tonight. the third one in the past two days. two of the sightings are happening here alone. san mateo resident said they jumped into the backyard about 3:30 this afternoon and got one of his chickens. another sighting about 6:00 tonight near laurel creek. officials are reminding residents to keep a close eye on kids and pets and don't approach the animal. a close call for a woman in san diego, swam competitively in college and swims in the ocean two to three times a week. friday morning, she and her swim partner were resting in the water before heading back to shore when something slammed into her. she says she
