and early voting turnout has reflected the urgency among voters. already 40 million americans have cast early ballots according to the united states elections project. that's about one million more than the previous midterms in 2018. you can tell just how important these elections are by who's hitting the trail. yesterday president biden and former president trump both held events campaigning for their parties' candidates in new york and florida. skyler henry is in washington. biden and trump were not the only big names out campaigning. >> reporter: that's right. good morning. good to see you. former presidents obama and clinton were also stumping alongside democrats in states especially where the races are tight. something toespeally today is tt ican a democratic candidates across the country will be sharpening messaging on the issues where the voters say they matter most. over the weekend, four u.s.

presidents hit the campaign trail a day after president biden and former president barack obama made a joint push for pennsylvania's democrats, mr. biden went to new york. >> this election isn't a referendum. it's a choice. a choice between two fundamentally different visions of america. >> reporter: former president donald trump also went to pennsylvania saturday, then to florida on sunday. >> you need to vote every democrat out of office and vote for republicans up and down the ballot. >> reporter: while former president bill clinton was in nevada -- >> everything i worked for all m life is on the line now. >> reporter: history in the midterms typically favors the party that's not currently in control of the presidency. as candidates make their final push they trying to motivate voters to a series of key hot-button issues like crime. >> what we're here talking about and the need to fight crime shouldn't even be viewed as a democrat versus republican issue.

>> we have to continue getting the illegal guns out of the hand of people -- >> reporter: and inflation -- >> look at the economy. look at the economy. they've destroyed it. >> i'm going to keep working on this issue to bring down costs. >> reporter: threats to election officials and political violence remain a concern heading into tomorrow. a federal intelligence bulletin warned that domestic violent extremists across the ideological spectrum pose a heightened threat to the midterm and through election day. though there are no specific threats currently. we talked about the tns of millions of people who have already hit the polls. one research group says that they expect this election to be the most expensive midterm in history with nearly $17 billion, that's with a "b," spent on federal and state races. add that to the balance of power here on capitol hill being up for grabs. back to you. >> skyler henry in our nation'so

one of the k races that coullp detmine cole u.s. senate of wisconsin. incumbent ron johnson is fighting to defend off a challenger to his seat from democrat mandela barnes. we have a closer look at the race and the issues that could shape the outcome. >> reporter: in battleground wisconsin, a clash over crime. >> crews crime by supporting -- reduce crime by supporting plaufrs. >> making sure we prevent crime in the first place -- >> reporter: republicans' national focus on crime hits hard in the wisconsin senate race where democratic lieutenant governor mandela barnes is challenging senator ron johnson. homicides have been on the rise in milwaukee and state department website since the -- and the state since the covid pandemic. barnes has been criticized of police budgets. >> i want to make sure that law enforcement have what they need. >> the disdain for lawsuit for

far too many years. >> violent crime is surging in wisconsin -- >> reporter: political groups in wisconsin have spent millions on ads focused on crime, and it appears to be having an impact. the issue registers as a top concern for voters just behind the economy and inflation. >> milwaukee's having a crazy year as far as shootings and things. we need to focus on community. >> reporter: democrats are hoping to shift the focus to johnson and his comments about january 6th. >> there weren't thousands of armed insurrectionists. >> reporter: how can you say that but also claim to support the police? >> i immediately condemned, forcefully condemned, repeatedly condemned the violence. there weren't thousands of armed insurrectionists. ise that false narrative. >> reporter: the barnes campaign hopes the issue of abortion access makes the difference in this tight race. our polling shows that it's the top isue of concern for his supporters. currently wisconsin is operating under an 1849 law banning nearly all abortions in the state.

cai caitlyn huey burnes, cbs news, maracana. another battleground with key races is arizona, and in a closely contested race for governor there's an investigation into a suspects envelope sent to the republican candidate. this was the scene at the phoenix campaign headquarters of kari lake. the campaign official said a staffer opened an envelope containing a suspicious white powder. that staffer is under medical supervision. it's not clear yet what was in the envelope. the race between lake and democrat katie hobbs is very tight. lake holds a slim lead in most polls. make sure you stay with cbs news all day tomorrow. we're going to have full coverage of the 2022 midterm election the here on cbs starting at 8:00 p.m. eastern. and now to the war in ukraine. and we are learning that the biden administration has held secret talks with russia in hopes of deescalating the nuclear threat. cbs news has confirmed that national security adviser jake

matching your job description. visit indeed.com/hire there was a deadly plane there was a deadly plane crash in africa's lake victoria, and a shooting on a busy philadelphia streets is under investigation. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand" stand. the "pittsburgh post gazette" is reporting nine people were wounded during a shooting police say gunmen emerged from a vehicle and fired 40 shots into a crowd. nypd people were struck. four remain in critical condition. police are searching for suspects and a motive has not been determined. the bbc says the death toll from the passenger plane crash near tanzania has risen to 19. the plane carrying 43 people plunged into lake victoria yesterday morning as it attempted to land. rescue crews were able to bring at least 26 people to safety within the first hours of the crash. a survivor of the crash said there was heavy turbulence as the plane tried to land in bad

weather. and "rolling stone" reports that the rock and roll hall of fame has inducted its class of 2022. dolly parton headlined the class which also included lionel richie and duran duran. parton who earlier this year asked for her nomination to be withdrawn because she didn't deserve the honor took to the stage to perform a new song she specifically wrote for the occasion. rapper eminem was another member of this diverse class of inductees. the detroit rapper put on a performance with ed sheeran and steven tyler and was inducted by fellow rapper dr. dre. a very emotional scene at a backstreet boys concert in london. singer nick carter breaking down in tears over the death of his younger brother. you can see the boy band members being embraced by his band mates at the 02 arena in london. it was carter's first show since the passing of his younger brother, aaron carter. the 34-year-old was found dead in his california home on saturday.
