sun, earth, and moon line up for a total lunar eclipse, the last one until 2025. it's tuesday, november 8th, 2022. this is the "cbs morning news." election day in america. millions of voters will cast their ballots today in one of the most pivotal elections in u.s. history. we take a look at the key races and what each party needs to do to hold onto power. securing our elections. the message the justice department has announced to make sure all voters are safe as they head to the polls. and powerball problems. why the record-braking $1.9 billion drawing was called off at the last minute. captioning funded by cbs morning and good be well, good morning and good to be with you.

i'm anne-marie green. the campaigning is over. the messages have been delivered. today it's time for the american people to head to the polls and cast their ballots. it's election day with control of both houses of congress up for grabs in one of the most consequential midterms in american history. so let's just take a look at the balance of power as it stands. right now democrats and republicans are tied at 50 apiece in the senate with democrats controlling the tiebreaking vote. in the house currently there are 222 democrat seats and 213 republican seats. that means the republicans only have to flip a handful of seats to control both houses for the remainder of president biden's time in office. with the stakes so high, campaign supporters hit the trails for the last time with a final message. skylar henry has more. skyler, good morning. >> reporter: hey, anne-marie,

good morning to you. candidates across the country in their closing amounts focused on hot-button issues, everything from inflation to economy, abortion rights, and crime. now it's up forotersecid hi c-rging eects on those issues and more. the candidates made their closing arguments ahead of today's electiom >> we built a campaign to win an election. >> our backs are against the wall here. >> reporter: -- to georgia. >> your vote is your voice. >> reporter: -- to pennsylvania. >> this is a transformable election. it's going to a loud message to washington. >> send me to washington, dc, and send dr. oz back to new jersey. >> reporter: after a maryland rally, president biden predicted this. >> i think it's going to be a very big wave. i hope so. >> reporter: election security still is a concern, and though the white house said yesterday there are no credible threats,

law enforcement has circulated bulletins about violent extremists. that concern occurred initially a few weeks ago when a man broke into nancy pelosi's home and attacked her husband. pelosi believes the current political environmental is to blame. >> it is a flame that was fueled by misinformation and all the rest of that, which is most unfortunate and has no place in our democracy. >> reporter: pelosi, whose house career spans three decades, says the attack will impact her decision on whether or not she'll retire. what's important to note here is even as polls close tonight, we may not know the full results in terms of how everything will shape up for quite a few days. poll workers have stressed patience as they count the results not only from today but the mail-in votes as well as those who voted in early, anne-marie. >> with so many close races, it's going to take a while. skyler henry in our nation's

capitol. thank you, skyler. control of congress is the ultimate goal with both part is in the hotly contested midterm. so what exactly does each party need to do to control the house and the senate? scott macfarlane broke it down earlier on cbs news. ten states have been marked in yellow. if democrats win five of the yellow states, they maintain control of the us senate. republicans would need to win six. republicans hold north carolina, florida, pennsylvania, ohio, and wisconsin, which means republicans have to win a blue state, flip it red, to get the majority. they've been so bullish and spent more than a quarter million dollars in georgia hoping herschel walker can do that. if republicans do, democrats have to win back a red state. that's why there's been so much money in three u.s. presidents in pennsylvania in recent days. all of it hinges on these ten battleground states.
4:35 am
>> that's the senate. what about the house? >> talk about close margins. we have those in the u.s. house as well. 218 votes needed for control. republicans have 213, which means they have to win five more. there are more than five endangered democratic house seats in new england, new york, new jersey, and virginia alone. >> that was scott macfarlane reporting. election security has been a big concern. in response the justice department is sending monitors to 24 states to make sure federal voting rights laws are being followed. they're protecting voters just as they have for decades, and it comes as civil rights groups and others have raised concerns ore voter intimidation at some locations and ballot boxes. there have been reports of armed people watching ballot boxes. maim sure you stick with cbs news for everything you need to know. we're going to have full coverage of the 2022 midterm elections right here on cbs starting at 8:00 p.m. eastern.

>> and it looks like we will find out in a week whether former president donald trump will, in fact, run again in 2024. >> i'm going to be making a very big announcement on tuesday, november 15th at mar-a-lago in palm beach, florida. >> trump dropped that hint last night at a rally in ohio for republican senate candidate jd vance. last week trump said that he would probably run again. and a russian businessman with ties to russian president vladimir putin appears to admit for the first time russia has meddled in u.s. elections. in remarks posted yesterday, yevgeny prigozhin said he has interfered in u.s. elections and he would continue to do so. he also responded to a journalist's question about the russians' possible meddling in today's elections. he was indicted in 2019 as part
