and it is the rain we've been needing. our chances for more straight ahead. good afternoon, everybody, i am reed cowan. let's start with that first alert weather. it's been a pretty good soaking over much of the bay area berkeley, on the left of your screen there, and drivers in san jose, they all had to do some navigation to move around street flooding . then crews were handling flooding in mountain view. in fact, this was the view from chopper 5 over 85 around south moffett boulevard. in milpitas they got pockets of rain through the morning hours. it got heavy at times. here is chief meteorologist paul heggen tracking the forecast right now. we have scattered showers around the bay area, some much-needed rainfall. but today was a first alert weather day because of that potential for the heaviest rain to be falling during the morning commute. you saw those issues we had in the south bay, and that's where we still have

flood advisory until 5:00 this evening for san jose and santa clara, including san jose and milpitas as well. we have left over pockets of standing rain, you will want to watch out for that this afternoon and evening. more scattered showers through the rest of tonight, but they are going to be fewer and far in between as we head farther into the night, down to about a 20%-30% chance by tomorrow morning. not a 0% chance, but we will be mostly dry. we have had almost 2 1/2 inches of rain for ben loman, almost 1 1/2 inch in san jose , east bay, and santa clara valley. almost 1 inch in downtown san francisco as well. we'll take a look at the seven-day forecast foin ans in a election day is here, officially. a lot of your across the bay area and the

country mailed in your ballots over the past few weeks. now it's time for others to head to in-verse and voting at the polls. >> reed, good afternoon. as you suspected, a lot have turned in their mail ballots , as every registered voter in the area received one in the mail. there is a steady flow of voters coming to the polls. one center in san mateo, this is considered a voting center, because even on a day today , if you are not registered you can come to this center, register, and also vote in person. it's a lot easier to vote this year in california. entering the day, a little over 20% of the ballots had been received in san mateo county. we just got an update, that's now about 35%. and since implementing the voters choice acting model, where every registered voter gets a ballot

and choice to submit it, that way in-person turnout has been relatively light. for many who came to vote in-person there's a lot on the line in this political climate. >> this country is having a really hard time. what happened on january 6th is not okay. what is happening to veterans rights, elders rights, medicare, social security, that's not how we should be living in the world. we need to take care of each other. i know big business wants to say it's all about money, but it's not, because when he does not come before people. >> i wanted to get my ballot in the machine to see that it was tallied the way that i voted, just to be 100% sure. i work in high tech, and i know that sometimes things don't always work the way you want them to. with all the best intentions it does not always work. i am a due diligence kind of person. i like to make sure my ballot is tallied correctly. >> reporter: a lot of people we spoke with today say they

just want to make sure that their vote is counted, and that is one of the reasons why they voted in-person today. it's of course very difficult to estimate the final turnout , but officials here in san mateo county, based on previous elections and averages , expect final turnout to be somewhere in the ballpark of 60% or more. we shall see by the end of tonight st ters. and some, let's send it back to you. >> kenny, i have a follow-up question. the gentleman who said he wanted to see if his ballot voted and registering it scworked for him? >> reporter: so he was expressing a little concern about you know, just the security. he did not want to mail in his ballot. he said that was definitely not something he wanted to do. he felt like he has more confidence by coming here to

vote in-person. it's not a perfect system, according to him, but he still felt that was , that gave him a little bit more assurance that his vote was counted. he shared with me a few other details about how he thinks the system could be perfected. it's not a perfect system. but certainly he felt better than he came here in-person. >> and that the bafor it at da > it crucial for people to exercise their right to vote. >> everybody to get a legal vote and make their opinions noted, it's important. >> contra costa county is reporting one fourth of the mail-in ballots officials sent out have already been returned. that adds up to more than 177,000. so we want to check in

now with kpix 5 's anne makovec with a look at some of the biggest races and measures a lot of our voters are watching right now. >> starting off with voters and who will replace two outgoing bay area mayors. starting in oakland, four candidates are vying for that job. lauren taylor and trevor reed are moderate democrats who have formed an alliance did ignacio de la fuente, who is coming out of retirement, the winner, will replace mayor libby schaaf . for san jose, santa clara county supervisor, cindy chavez there on your right against san jose city unma mahan, and then, the gambling propositions we have seen. 26, backed by tribal nations . 27

futures more lgbtq candidates than ever with california leading the way. our loren thomas explains how a more diverse group of local and national lawmakers could benefit everybody. >> voting in this year's election marks a significant moment for tom , the political director for equality california , as well as the greater lgbtq community. >> it does matter. it feels really tangible. and i think there are region areas for optimism. >> this year, a record number of lgbtq candidates on the ballot, not only in california, but a historic first in all 50 states. and this year it's a tangible significance that could result in high stakes outcomes. >> it's critical, absolutely critical . and speaking just to the san francisco experience , i think what we saw here was during the monkeypox crisis that happened just this past summer, having queer people

at the table, in positions of power, to advocate for ways only elected officials can often do, really, i think, changed the trajectory and saved a lot of people. not only hospitals, potentially their lives. >> at least 1065 out lgbtq people are running for office, according to the victory fund, and here in california, a record 10% of the state legislature is expected to be made up of lgbtq elected officials. >> so many queer people on ballots across the country, in every state, it's really remarkable. here in san francisco, again, we were really at the forefront of achieving that sort of representation. and it still feels special here. >> after coming out in high school, temprano served in his democratic club. he says

east and drug the best chance of rain away from us. it will still leave plenty of moisture towards southern california and into the high sierra. let's take a look at the radar view, just around the bay area. we still have these hit or miss showers, and one spot under flood advisory, this is portions of alameda county, but mostly santa clara valley, around san jose. there could still be standing puddles, maybe a few flooded intersections. watch out for that as you make your way out and about this evening. showers continue to rotate in from the pacific. it is really scattered activity over the water. we will see fewer of these showers through the rest of tonight . and futurecast has a good handle on the overall pattern. can't rule out the possibility of a passing shower , same thing as you head out the door tomorrow morning. but those showers will not be as much of a factor in tomorrow's forecast. the best chance will be in the santa clara valley and inland and east bay. again, those are going to be more miss than hit. the sierra, still hitting close to a foot of

additional snowfall for the highest elevations. trouble is strongly discouraged along u.s. 50 and i-80. pretty clouds in the distance right now, but also blue skies are showing itself. everybody is in the low to mid 50s right now, it is cool. it's been breezy. the wind won't be as much of a factor, tomorrow, but it will be chilly tomorrow morning, temperatures mostly in the low to mid 40s, low and mid bay valleys in the upper 30s to start the day, wednesday. high temperatures tomorrow will still end up a good 8-12 degrees below normal. most of us topping out in the upper 50s. not too much variation . 50s along the coast, 50s to 60s in the santa clara valley, similar in those inland areas. around the bay, no changes, mid to upper 50s north of the golden gate. again, it's a well stirred air mass. cooler temperatures farther north , inland, portions of mendocino county only reaching up to

around 50 for highs tomorrow. temperatures will be somewhat tomorrow and friday, a return to the low 60s for inland parts of the bay area. the dry weather looks like it will continue. we had showers in the forecast for monday, next week. that has diminished. it's still not a 0% chance, but we are less impressed overall with how that system is going to behave. we will keep an eye on that, but the weekend itself looks dry with temperatures returning close to normal. reed ? coming up how
