i'm serena marshall, cbs news, washington. it's thursday, november 10th, 2022. this is the "cbs morning news." breaking overnight, nicole makes landfall. the hurricane came ashore along florida's east coast. we'll be live from near the eye of the storm. hanging in the balance. control of the u.s. house and senate are still up for grabs as votes are still being counted across the country. what president biden is saying about the results up to this point. and attack suspect indicted. a man accused of attacking paul pelosi with a hammer is indicted by a federal grand jury. the charges he's facing. well, good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with tropical storm

nicole making landfall overnight in florida. the storm hit the east coast as a rare november hurricane just south of vero beach this morning. it's downgraded, though. earlier nicole battered the bahamas. jason allen is just north of west palm beach and right where nicole came ashore. what are things looking like now? >> reporter: good morning. you know, we've got a little bit of light rain, and the wind has come back. vero beach had a break this morning after a very rough night. for about an hour it was almost dead calm at times as the eye of the storm passed over the city. but now here comes the rain again, here comes the wind in the opposite direction as the storm makes its way across the state. after pounding the bahamas, nicole made landfall in the u.s. just south of vero beach just before 3:00 a.m. the storm is bringing punishing winds and rain. on wednesday, storm surge caused part of this building's parking lot to collapse in daytona beach.

sheriff deputies went door to door at this seaside condo complex evacuating residents. >> with this storm surge coming in and high winds, we are fearful that several of those buildings will collapse. >> reporter: across town residents loaded up on sandbags in the final hours before hunkering down. >> we were affected last hurricane, and we had more than water all over damage. now we're getting prepared for this hurricane this time. >> reporter: teddy miller planned to ride out the storm at home in jensen beach. >> unfortunately being that we just went through this four weeks ago, three, four weeks ago, we're kind of somewhat prepared. >> reporter: nicole is expected to knock out powers to hundreds of thous o governor dws arepore s fast as possiblelinedibegin pore>>orte evaation orde in in fect all alo . nicole will go down as just the third hurricane to make landfall in florida in november since recordkeeping started in 1853.

this morning the power is still on here in vero beach. but we have started to see some of the reported outages increase hour by hour. and ate nicole makes its way over more populated areas in central florida. >> all right. jason allen in vero beach, florida. thank you so much. on to politics now and control of congress hangs in the balance with votes still being counted in several key races across the country. here's where we stand right now -- cbs news projects the u.s. senate is still a tossup with 48 states -- rather, 48 seats for democrats and 49 for republicans. we are awaiting results in arizona, nevada, and georgia which is heading to a runoff next month. as for the house, republicans have flipped seats and could gain control. needing 218 seats to hold the majority. yesterday president biden spoke about the midterm election he talked about democrats

holding off a so-called red wave, saying it was a, quote, good day for democracy. skyler henry is in washington with more. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you. although it was a confident president biden yesterday sharing his thoughts on the midterm results but also adding he is ready and willing to work with republicans regardless of the final vote tally. there are still several tossup races in both the house and senate making control of congress coming down to the wire. the day after tuesday's midterms, president biden celebrated what he called a good day for democracy. >> democrats had a strong night. we still have a possibility of keeping the house, but it's going to be close. >> reporter: cbs news projects the house leans republican with votes in multiple tight races still being tallied. gop leader mccarthy has launched his bid for speaker. >> we are going to take the house back. >> reporter: president biden called mccarthy yesterday according to the white house.

>> i'm prepared to work with my republican colleagues. >> reporter: it could take days before we know which party controls the house. the battle in the senate is likely to take several weeks with georgia's top two candidates headed for a december 6th runoff. >> i don't come to lose. >> we will hear from the people of georgia. >> reporter: cbs news projects the senate race in arizona as leaning democrat while nevada is considered a tossup. >> they kent say -- kept saying he's going at nominations. is he good on the general election? >> reporter: a source close to donald trump tells cbs news the former president has been, quote, blaming everyone except himself over the results, including his aides and fox news host sean hannity. sources also telling us there's an internal debate over whether trump should go forward with his big announcement planned for next week that could signal another presidential run. >> thank you -- >> reporter: meanwhile, president biden says he intends to run again but will make that judgment early next year. we should also point out that

alaska's senate race is still undecided. the top two candidates are both republicans, so that won't impact the balance of power. president biden and vice president harris are expected to address the midterm results again today at a planned dnc event in washington. >> skyler henry in our nation's capital. thank you. the democratic party suffered a bit of an embarrassing loss when the congressman in charge of re-electing house democrats lost his own race in new york. yesterday sean patrick mahoney, head of the democratic campaign committee, conceded to his opponent, republican mike lawler. it marked the first time a -- first general election defeat, rather, for a campaign chair of either party since 1980. and supporters of abortion rights saw victories in at least four states. measures protecting abortion rights passed in california, michigan, and vermont. voters in kentucky said no to limiting abortion access. cbs news has not projected a

final outcome on a measure in montana always limiting abortion rights. but voters are leaning toward rejecting it. five states had proposals on the ballot legalizing recreational marijuana. voters in maryland and missouri said yes, while those in arkansas, north dakota and south dakota said no. the man accused of attacking the husbands of house speaker nancy pelosi faces decades in prison after being indicted on federal charges. a grand jury indicted david depape yesterday on charges of assault and attempted kidnapping. last week he pleaded not guilty to state charges in california including attempted murder. 82-year-old paul pelosi was attacked with a hammer in the couple's san francisco home last month. and now to the war in ukraine in what may be a big setback for russian president vladimir putin. russia's military is withdrawing from the ukrainian port city of kherson. it's the only regional capital russia has captured since it invaded ukraine more than eight months ago.

it comes as ukrainian forces advanced in the region. president volodymyr zelenskyy has warned that russia could be faking a pull-out to lure his country's troops into battle. meanwhile, lawyers for brittney griner say she's being moved to a russian penal colony to serve her nine-year state. she was arrested at a moscow airport in february after russian authorities said they found cannabis oil in her luggage. yesterday president biden said he hopes russia will now negotiate for griner's release. >> my intention is to get her home, and we've had a number of discussions so far. and i'm hopeful that now that our election is over there's a willingness to negotiate more specifically with us. >> the biden administration has proposed a prisoner swap with russia to bring griner and fellow jailed american paul whelan home. coming up, an update on a radioactive contamination

the world health organization reports a nearly 90% drop in worldwide covid deaths since february. the u.n. health agency said that there were just over 9,400 deaths linked to the virus last week. that's compared to more than 75,000 nine months ago. the w.h.o. said the numbers are cause for optimism, but urged vigilance as new variants continue to spread. and the bbc says a student was arrested after allegedly throwing eggs at king charles and queen consort camilla. it happened yesterday as charles and his wife were greeting a crowd in the city of york. the 23-year-old student could also be heard booing the king. he was quickly restrained by police, and none of the eggs struck the royal couple. people in the crowd started chanting "god save the king" after the eggs were thrown. still to come, a warning about your lunch. a foodborne bacteria is being linked to deli meat and cheeses and has already killed one person. one

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ first twitter, now meta. a massive round of layoffs has been announced at facebook and instagram's parent company. carter evans has a look at the layoffs of 11,000 people. >> reporter: the 11,000 layoffs at meta come after the company lost more than $700 billion in value since ceo mark zuckerberg re-branded facebook and went on a hiring spree. >> 2021 tech was booming due to people staying at home. 2022 has seen a reversal of those covid trends. >> reporter: zuckerberg apologized to employees for his big gamble on the virtual reality metaverse. the country, wall street is awaiting final election results and new inflation data. stock futures flat. the dow down 646 points. nasdaq 263, and the s&p 500 falling 80. the downlook impacting wall street jobs with layoffs at citi group and barclay's and other firms may be following. cmbc reporting citi group let go of 50 trading personnel this week and dozens of banking roles. barclay's cut around 200 banking and trading positions. jpmorgan and morgan stanley are also expected to have end-of-year cuts. thanksgiving travelers will have a reprove from worries about a rail line shutdown that would be devastating. a strike scheduled originally to begin in no deal was made between the union and the industry has been pushed back to december 5th. the holdup has been over the demands for paid sick time and quality of life concerns such as regularly scheduled weekends. and adidas will continue to sell yeezy products just without
