donchey. the issue of gun violence front and center in oakland. the father who lost his daughter 25 years ago is channeling his pain to try to help young people who are still dealing with that same issue today. andrea nakano the vigil. >> reporter: yeah. loesha lacey was only 16 years old when she was gunned down. her father for the last 25 year has been working to bring peace to the streets of oakland and that work has been critically important, especially in the last 25 years. >> on this spot, 25 years ago, my daughter took her last breath. >> reporter: a group gathered to honor the life of loeshae lacey and the countless others who have lost their lives to gun violence. her father donald

started a foundation named after his daughter. >> it is not lost on me the meaning of her name. it is nigerian and it means love life. >> reporter: lacey has been working to spread the message of love life sting connections to give his community hope. >> he would listen to me and hear me cry at 2:00 in the morning and lift me up. >> love life. don't take life. >> reporter: it is a simple message, but one he feels need to be repeated in oakland. >> in a city that is so overwhelmed with violence, we need to sing that song. love life over and over. >> reporter: his daughter inspired him to become a community advocate. even at the

young age of 16, she was known as a conflict resolution mediator at school. now lacey is making sure the message of peace reaches the youth. >> i take that with me and i just think about that. and i bring that into a way that kids will like and share that with them so they can hopefully share it with somebody else. >> reporter: zaire hughes lost his brother to gun violence in 2015. his mother audrey said it was the love life foundation that helped her family grieve and cope. >> love life. why don't you jump on it? >> reporter: and through the love life foundation, the mission is to spare others from the pain they have experienced. and build a vibrant oakland community. >> this isn't a movement for black or brown, it's a movement for all people. violence affects us all. >> reporter: the love life foundation will hold several

events this week in honor of the 25th anniversary. but anyone anywhere can honor his daughter by spreading love through a random act of kindness. andrea nakano. kpix5 . two days after the elections are over, we still don't know who the next mayor of oakland will be but we have some idea. wilson walker has the u in numbers tonight and what they mean. >> reporter: we have received more votes in oakland. not many votes but they tell us quite a bit. we will show you the first place votes in the oakland mayoral race. lauren taylor not only continues to lead, but his margin against his closest challenger has actually grown a fraction of a percent. we flip over to the rank choice voting totals. his lead in that regard continues to expand as well. this is not just a path toward victory, but an increasing margin of victory. we will not get numbers here in oakland. they are taking the day off for

veteran's day. we are expecting a substantial vote total to come in on monday night. >> tuesday, election day. we were focused on the early votes we were able to prep. before election day. and the in person votes that were cast throughout election day. and now we have moved everything over to processing the remaining vote by mails and like i said, the vast majority of what we have received now and what we are processing, word dropped off on election day. >> reporter: will that be enough to resolve the race? who knows. we don't know what the remaining tens of thousands of votes look like. but the latest batch of numbers more good news for lauren taylor. wilson walker, kpix5. this election teaching us a little bit of patience. the san jose mayoral race. ballot counting in san francisco is also far from over. today, the city reported results from less than 10,000 ballots. more than 130,000 of them still need to

be processed in san francisco. you know, it will probably be weeks before all the u.s. senate races are settled. control of the u.s. house right now is leaning republican. but, we still don't have answers in key races in some very important battlegrounds from coast to coast. we will stay on top of it. we will follow all the election results as they come in. you can find updates here on kpix5. cbs news bay area and at kpix.com. elon plussic not really painting a very pretty picture of twitter's financial future. he warned employees that twitter did not have the necessary cash to survive. he even used the word bankruptcy. all of this happening as some key executives are leaving in droves including people who oversee security and content moderation at twitter. bloomburg reporting in the past 24 hours, the head of trust and safety, the vice president of sales, the chief privacy and compliance officers have all

left. the chief of cyber security is also out. i made the hard decision to leave twitter, she tweeted, i have had the opportunity to work with amazing people. i'm so proud of the teams and the work we have done. engineering manager eric rosenburg tweeted this. i resigned from twitter after nine years. i'm proud of everything i accomplished here and everyone i worked with to do it. and now, the federal trade commission actually has its eyes on twitter. the agency released its own statement saying quote we are tracking recent developments at twitter with chief concern. no chief executive or company is above the law. how about this? we couldn't even reach out to twitter to get their response about this story because the company's entire communications department has been laid off. >> unfortunately, i think the cost of food will remain high for both thanksgiving and christmas hanukkah season. >> .

>> inflation. good and bad news. prices are rising at the slowest rate since january, but this thanksgiving will be expensive. turkeys cost 17% more than a year ago and grocery staples are on the rise. eggs are up 43%. butter, 27%. inflation in the bay hitting a 20 year high last month. one mayor culprit, utility costs. electricity and natural gas prices have been shooting up. a federal court has struck down president biden's student loan forgiveness program declaring it illegal. a conservative group filed suit last month. the program was already on hold after a ruling by the u.s. court of appeals in a different legal challenge. doctors are very worried about a triple-demic this holiday season. covid, flu, and rsv. rsv cases as we have been reporting for weeks are soaring among kids. they are filling up pediatric icus . more people are also coming down with the

flu earlier this season. most cases of covid, flu, and rsv are probably going to be mild. but, holiday gatherings could spread illnesses quickly. >> we hear stories of vulnerable people becoming ill when a family member or a friend came to an event with symptoms. so, very, very important to think about others. >> skiers and snow boarders are probably happy. get all of your gear ready. top sierra ski resorts are opening early in the next few hours. boreal and mount rose are opening tomorrow. heavenly and north star will be back open six days early. kirkwood welcoming skier back saturday nearly three weeks earlier than planned. interestingly enough, a couple of weeks ago, that didn't seem like it was going to be the situation. >> right. but that is just soaking, the rain we saw was a dumping of snow for the high sierra. so conditions are looking pretty good and the skiers are happy to get out there a little bit early. the background of this is beautiful. but let's take a look at the know totals earlier

three people had to be

rescued after a tesla crashed into a home. this happened on san bruno not far from bay view park. a tesla drove into the garage. this is what the car looked like after that crash. pretty awful. all three people who were rescued are now in the hospital with major injuries. and this is the aftermath of the crash itself. the garage door was basically ripped to shreds. police are looking into why the driver crashed in the first place. california attorney general rob bonta suing 3m, dupont, and more than a dozen smaller companies in the first ever statewide suit over so-called forever chemicals. >> we allege the manufacturers knew or should have known about these dangers when they made these products. and manufacturers failed to warn of these chemicals and concealed them entirely. >> the companies could face

hundreds of millions of dollars. young people in the bay calling attention to climate change today. they took the message through the streets of san francisco in a climate strike march. they are calling for more effective policies to fight climate change. their first stop was at a local military recruitment station. the protesters called out the military for its major carbon footprint. hurricane nicole left a path of destruction along the florida coast. this drone video shows seven houses that collapsed into the ocean in volusia county after the storm hit. nicole made landfall as a category 1. erosion is a big issue with this one. 20 feet of sand washed away by huge waves. it feels like when ever we see a storm like this, we see something like this. the water got so high in saint augustine that somebody busted out the surfboard and they were paddling through the street. you know, i can't tell you, i mean i worked in markets where flooding is a big problem.

we look at tend to converge on a scenario of what's going to happen. that's not the case this time. it is only 24, 48 hours away. we are seeing a wide range of possibilities so let's take a look at futurecast and show you one of those possibilities. increase in cloud cover tonight that might keep temperatures a little warmer than last night. more clouds and sun to start the day. but we will see the sun breaking through in the afternoon. and then a chance for a few showers to be sneaking into the north bay tomorrow evening and trying to make their way across the bay area tomorrow night. a lot of that will evaporate before it hits the ground because the air over the bay area is pretty dry. but a more substantial area of moisture droping in from the north by midday on saturday. and, this latest forecast model run shows a better chance of that holding together as it goes across the entire bay area. there are other forecast models that keep us dry. we need the rain. but you have to be flexible with any outdoor plans for saturday.

wouldn't necessarily cancel anything. because there's still a solid chance this never materializes. but have an alternative in mind. plenty of sunshine. temperatures still cool on sunday, but looking pretty good. if we get some rain, it is not going to add up a whole lot on top of what we have already received. livermore and san jose looking good at this point. fairly close to average in san francisco. santa rosa could use a little moisture. less than half of what you are supposed to receive. there is some of that cloud cover over san jose where temperatures dropped down to 48. 30s on the map early tomorrow morning. mostly mid to upper 30s . which keeps us above freezing. still that frost advisory is in effect through 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. low to mid 40s around the bay and along the coast. high temperatures tomorrow, reaching up to only 5 or 6 degrees below average. so that will be on the cool side once again. mid 50s along the coast. everybody else is going to be in the upper 50s and low 60s . doesn't matter if you are in the santa clara
