connected tv. i'm serena marshall, cbs news, washington. it's friday, november 11th, 2022. this is the "cbs morning news." unprecedented damage, that's how some florida officials are describing what hurricane nicole did as it came on shore and tore through the sunshine state. a look at the damage and where the storm is headed next. student loan plans struck down, a federal judge deals a big blow to the biden administration's plan to cancel student loan debt. and washington commanders sued. why the team, its owner and the nfl itself is being sued by washington, d.c.'s attorney general. good morning and good to be with you. and happy veterans day to the heroic men and women who have

served our country. i'm anne-marie green. and we begin with what is left of hurricane nicole after it lashed florida causing what some officials are calling unprecedented damage. right now the storm has weakened to a tropical depression and has entered the state of georgia. nicole will continue to move north and east and rip through the carolinas and into virginia by this evening. down in florida, though, the storm caused catastrophic damage including in daytona beach where people are without homes after nicole left them unlivable. and believe it or not, there could be more damage on the way, elise preston has more. >> reporter: homes along this barrier island teeter on the edge before hurricane nicole hit. now many have crumbled into the ocean. local officials in volusia county say as many as 40 single homes and 19 hotels are compromised. >> no one has ever seen anything like this. we're worried about the condos, worried about rehoming people.

>> reporter: walls are gone, furniture is ruined. everything these homeowners have worked for has been swept away by the sea. >> this whole area is unsafe as well. it's just compromsed everything and it's creating basically almost like sinkholes underneath these houses. >> reporter: back in september hurricane ian undermined sea walls in the area and there wasn't enough time to fix them before nicole made a rare november landfall. >> this is obviously not as significant a storm as hurricane ian was, but coming on the heels of that, you're seeing communities where you had a lot of that erosion on the coastline, you know, this has put some of those structres in jeopardy. >> reporter: homes, roads and the beach are all unsafe and residents are urged to stay indoors. >> at this time we are not sure when the beach will be safe to visit again. >> reporter: rising water and flooded roads have cut off neighborhoods and here in daytona beach shores neighbors are overwhelmed by what it will take to rebuild their community.

>> it's heartbreaking. our town is in for some pretty hard times, i think. you do everything you can to be safe, but you can't control the hurricane. >> that was elise preston reporting. from a hurricane in the east to a winter storm in the north. the first blizzard of the season is blasting parts of north dakota, south dakota and minnesota. it's dumping more than a foot of snow along with sleet and freezing rain on the northern plains. forecasters say winds could be as high as 50 miles per hour. now, the storm led to a chain reaction crash and shut down some highways in north dakota. and control of the united states congress still hangs in the balance three days after election day. senate races in arizona, nevada and georgia will determine which party controls the u.s. senate for the remainder of president biden's term. georgia is headed to a december runoff, but we are awaiting results in arizona and nevada where ballots are still being counted. cbs news projects the race in arizona is leaning democratic, while nevada still a toss-up.

skyler henry is in washington with more on where things stand now. skyler, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. election officials in arizona and nevada are pushing back over criticism from former president trump and other republicans that the vote count is, quote, rigged and taking too long. saying that they've said for several weeks that they wouldn't have a final vote talley on election night and it could take several days. >> are you ready to do this one more time? >> reporter: georgia's u.s. senate candidates are back on the campaign trail. >> they said we in overtime. we are in overtime. >> reporter: control of the u.s. senate depends on georgia's december 6th runoff and two other states, arizona and in evidence darks which remain uncalled. as the count continues in nevada election officials denounced false claims from former president donald trump suggesting their elections are, quote, rigged. >> obviously he's misinformed, two years later, about the law

and our election processes. >> reporter: officials in arizona's largest county also pushed back after gubernatorial candidate kari lake accused them of dragging out their count. >> it is offensive for kari lake to say that these people behind me are slow rolling this when they're working 14 to 18 hours. >> reporter: in washington the president thanked the democratic national committee. >> experts said we couldn't beat the odds but we did beat the odds. >> reporter: cbs news projects the house leans republican with dozens of races left uncalled. still, it appears members from the gop have already started lining up in a bid to become the next speaker. representative kevin mccarthy, the current republican leader in the house, has announced his intent to run, though there are reports some far right members of his caucus could challenge him. meanwhile, house democrats say their leadership elections will be held in three weeks. and while there are dozens of races that are still uncalled here in this election, there are already focuses on 2024.

former president trump is still moving forward with that special announcement at least for now hinting towards a presidential bid. meanwhile, president biden was asked about whether he will run for reelection, he said that he will make that decision next year. >> skyler henry in washington. thank you. breaking overnight, a federal judge in texas struck down president biden's student loan forgiveness plan. the judge a trump era appointee said that the plan to coopsel hundreds of billions of student loan debt was unconstitutional. the ruling was in response to a lawsuit filed on behalf of two borrowers not eligible for its program. the plan had already been temporarily blocked by a federal appeals court in a separate case. the justice department is appealing the judge's ruling. and a major lawsuit has been filed against the nfl and the washington commanders. they are accused of trying to lie to the public about an alleged toxic work environment surrounding the team. bradley blackburn has a look at

the lawsuit. >> reporter: the blistering civil suit access the washington commanders owner dan snyder, the nfl and league commissioner roger goodell of working to deceive the public about an investigation into the team's allegedly toxic workplace. >> the defendants lied about what they knew and then they lied about what they were going to do about it. >> reporter: the investigation which kicked off in 2021 looks into allegations of sexual harassment and workplace misconduct. the d.c. torn general ckarl racine said most impacted women. >> the evidence shows mr. snyder was not only aware of the toxic culture within his organization, he encouraged it and he participated in it. >> reporter: a washington commanders attorney issued a statement saying snyder and his wife commanders co-ceo tanya snyder previously acknowledged that an unacceptable workplace culture existed and apologized many times. it says the consumer protection lawsuit repeats innuendo, half

truths and lies. megan, a former team employee, told cbs news she was among the targets of the alleged workplace abuses. >> i'm one of many women that experienced sexual harassment, derogatory comments daily, comments about what we were wearing and that's just surface level. it really was a very hostile place to work. >> reporter: according to the d.c. attorney general snyder and the nfl together tried to block findings of the league's own ten-month investigation from being publicly revealed. bradley blackburn, cbs news. info wars host alex jones was ordered to pay an additional $473 million for calling the sandy hook elementary school shooting a hoax. the punitive damages imposed by a connecticut judge yesterday brings the total judgment against jones to almost $1.5 billion in a lawsuit filed by the victims' families. 20 children and six adults were

on the morning newsstand. "the new york times" reports pooinden will meet with chinese president xi jinping on monday during the g20 summit in indonesia. it will be the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since mr. biden took office. the white house says mr. biden will be direct and straightforward with the chinese leader amid tensions between the two countries over the issue of taiwan. vladimir putin will not attend the summit according to indonesian officials. newjersey.com says an 18-year-old man was charged with threatening to attack synagogues. omar alkattoul was arrested yesterday and appeared in federal court in newark. he is accused of posting an online threat last week against synagogues and jewish people that caused the fbi to issue a warning to synagogues across the state. police increased security at jewish houses of worship and jewish schools. the suspect faces up to five years in prison if convicted. and the "chicago sun-times" says construction at the obama

in fact, in more than two years. the dow surging 1200 points, the nasdaq up 761 and the s&p 500 jumped more than 207. a big part of that reason for the explosive rally, the government's new inflation report which showed a slowing. inflation dropped to a 7.7% annual return, lower than the expected 8%. it increases hopes the 40-year-high inflation rate we've been experiencing may be slowing to lower levels. a big recall coming from one of the nation's biggest car companies, general motors recalling 340,000 suvs, including certain tahoes, suburbans, yukons and escalades. the issue the daytime running lights may not shut off when the regular head lights are on which could cause glare for oncoming drivers. and elon musk has owned twitter for only two weeks but already is hinting it two declare bankruptcy. musk warning employees that bankruptcy isn't out of the
