violently attacked when someone tried to rob him at the palace of fine arts, and everything was caught on camera. there were plenty of witnesses around, but that didn't deter the attackers. da lin has been following the story, and tells us attacks like this have become pretty common at this popular photo spot. cameras, and they know there are a lot of opportunities at the palace of fine arts. from weddings to engagements, a lot of cameras capturing beautiful memories at the world famous palace of fine arts. >> that's so cute! >> reporter: but one recent photo shoot turned dangerous. it happened on wednesday around 4:40 p.m. the victim refused to give up his camera. the attackers repeatedly threatened the victim with their guns. one of the guns has an extended clip. they hit him and pistol whipped him. >> just watching the struggle, i really felt for him and the

couple because i know that they felt helpless. >> reporter: the groom in the white suit and bride in the red dress. there are dozens standing around, fearful to get involved and possibly get shot. we're told the photographer is based in dallas. the couple is from the bay area. they had gotten their marriage certificate at city hall before the photo shoot. after about a minute of struggling, the gunmen ran off. this cell phone video shows a gunman running away with someone else's bag into likely a stolen get away car. >> i think he was extremely, extremely brave to have done that, but, you know, it's not worth risking your life over potentially, because they did have guns. >> reporter: this san francisco-based photographer was alerted to the attack and watched the video right before her shoot on saturday. >> i was just scared, yeah, i

was scared and nervous. >> reporter: the palace of fine arts is a hot spot for car break ins. that's why these signs are posted all around it. but this type of attack is forcing some photographers to stay away. >> it changes things. i think possibly next year i wouldn't have that many shoots in sf anymore. >> reporter: but this wedding photographer says that's not an option. her livelihood depends on this location. >> all my couples are traveling from out of state and want the most signature locations. >> reporter: she says she'll just have to be more careful. >> asian female photographer, usually by myself. i'm an easy target for them. >> reporter: how does that make you feel? >> very vulnerable. >> reporter: the victim has a bloody head from repeated blows. he says the reason he refused to give up the cameras, he wanted to save the pictures for his clients. in san francisco, i'm da lin, kpix 5. tonight, police are searching for the suspects that

robbed a jewelry store in the san pablo town center along interstate 80 on san pablo dam road. multiple suspects came in and robbed the store at gun point, and then got away. police are still investigating. no further description of the suspects have been released. some 48,000 workers from the university of california are set to begin striking at all ten campuses tomorrow. they're demanding better pay and expanded family leave among other things. and with teacher assistance, graders, researchers, and more all set to join the picket line, some classes could be shut down ahead of final exams in december. the napa valley film festival is happening this weekend. it's a celebration of film, and of course being in napa valley, food and wine as well. tonight festival organizers honored an actor on the rise after her break out role in the hit movie everything everywhere all at once. she spoke with us about

bringing more asian-american representation to the big screen. >> i can see where this story is going. >> reporter: everything, everywhere all at once is a sci-fi comedy centered around an asian-american family. stephanie plays joy, a daughter trying to get her mother to love and accept she's queer. >> it explores this complex relationship. no one can see her face, but she's smiling at me in a way you probably know about mother and daughter relationships, which is they're complex and complicated. i've had so many people, especially asian-americans, daughters and also mothers, just saying like, thank you so much for this film. i've never seen anything like it, and it tells the story of my family. they'll just start crying and be like i don't know how you guys did it,

but i see myself in that story. >> i don't believe you. >> reporter: the emotional movie is believed to be an oscars contender, and has already broken records at the box office. it's the independent studio a24's highest grossing release ever and also stephanie's first feature film. growing up she didn't see anyone like her on the big screen. >> it's crazy to reflect on even when i was coming up that i was very much an only in a lot of the rooms i was in, and i think i've just always been really a passionate person and bull headed and stubborn probably to a fault. >> reporter: she's now creating space for aspiring asian-american actors. speaking to this cultural moment, how do you feel? because as a community we've experienced so much heartbreak and trauma, but there's also so much to celebrate. >> totally. i think one of my

favorite things about the movie is it's about so many things that it's able to somehow transcend identity politics. >> reporter: the napa valley film festival presented her with the rising star award, a celebratory diner at the culinary institute featured asian cuisine and wine inspired by the movie. >> it's isolating to look at media and not see yourself represented. so the fact that this film does represent asian culture in such a beautiful way is very important. >> i feel excited about the future of art to kind of move away from just re-emphasizing how we're different or how we've been marginalized and to really start to embrace diversity in a way that seems seamless. >> reporter: in napa, betty yu, kpix 5. turning now to the election. new numbers out of the santa clara county and san

francisco for the midterm election races still yet to be decided. we start with the san jose's race. the latest numbers show chavez closing the gap on mahan, picking up another thousand votes today. but that still leaves mahan up by about 4,000 votes. turning now to santa clara, same percentage points, 51 to 48, but a much tighter race as incumbent gilmore leads becker by just 451 votes. becker received millions in backing from levi stadium and the 49ers, while the owner of the miami dolphins supports gilmore. ross' real estate company is developing a project in santa clara. and one more race to update you on. the battle to be the next district attorney for san francisco. it's looking more and more likely that london breed backed appointee will win. when you factor in rank

needed cash and crowds back to the mountains this season. so, it feels like today was a day for the driving restrictions, but tomorrow they're going to see great conditions out there for skiing. yes. if anyone was lucky enough to get up there and they're all tucked in and ready to go, tomorrow will be great. it will be a blue bird day with three to six inches of snow. but here at home, the rain is down. going to first alert doppler, it's going to look weird. you see all the fuzzy green stuff in the central valley and even here in the bay area. that's because the radar has been switched over to its most sensitive setting because it's not raining. they call it clear air mode. so we're seeing a bunch of stuff that's not rain. i'll turn it off, and we'll get a much clearer view of what's falling from the sky, and it's just the snow. still going. this is good. this will go for about another two or three hours and continue to put snow down. the better snow is

focused from 50 south. kirkwood, sierra, tahoe. those will be the places with nice fresh tracks tomorrow. but, the system itself, in terms of the bay area, is done except for the cold air. looking at the big picture, you don't really see it. we're right in the middle of this thing. look at the counterclockwise spin centered right over us. it's going to be cold tomorrow morning. you can almost visualize. we had two cold fronts come through, but now you can see the flow in the atmosphere. we're just pulling in the cold air from the north. we'll have relatively clear skies tomorrow morning. it's going to be cold as we go back to the mid-30s. if we just look at what the satellite will look like on the futurecast, maybe a batch of clouds is pulled in, but there's nothing really organized. here's tomorrow morning's lows. 34 in santa rosa, 37 in napa, 38 in vallejo. it's the sheltered north bay valleys that feel it the most. we had pretty dense fog up there this morning. plan on that as a good possibility tomorrow morning as well. if

you're an early morning riser, on the road, in the north bay valleys, give yourself extra time because of the fog. everyone else is doing okay. still cold. the afternoons are just fine. you don't feel this so much in the middle of the day. low 60s and sunshine, you barely notice it. the days are pretty benign. it's the morning lows where you feel the cold air. the other thing important for tomorrow is the beach hazard statement. there's a lot of energy kicked up in the pacific from this series of storms, and tomorrow is a day when that kind of delayed wave action will hit the coast. so be mindful if you're near the water tomorrow. don't turn your back on the waves because we'll have some rip currents and it will be a bit dangerous. we get a little warmer by thursday.

plenty of sunshine too. we're done with the possibility for rain. let's get back to the first seven-day forecast to show you san francisco, oakland, and san jose. same story there. back to you. all right, thank you. dozens of people came out tonight for the 7th annual german san francisco lantern festival in the castro at the german international school of silicon valley's campus here in the city. it's a popular festival celebrated each fall in germany. they had a lantern parade, live performances, and food and games for people to enjoy. the dominican sisters of catholic nuns teamed up with local community members today for their big annual fundraiser, the olive harvest. >> we decided to invite our friends, the people in the community, and that's made all the difference. >> the dominican sisters have

deep roots in the community. their order has been headquarters in fremont for more than 130 years. in years past, three to four tons of olives have been harvested from the trees. the tradition also includes community service and joy. the sisters estimate that as many as 2,000 people, young and old, took part in the harvest. two blocks of sports coming up. 49ers and warriors to get to in a bit, including steph's magnificent week, but straight college football after the break. did they live to fight another day or wind up like this guy? highlights, ouch, coming up next.

the san francisco zoo is welcoming its newest resident, a kimodo dragon. they celebrated today with a kimodo carnival. today was his first time on display at the main exhibit. they're the largest lizard species on the planet, and this one is four years old and about two and a half feet long. and an electric night at chase center, steph curry, though, didn't have anything to do with this. lizzo is rapping up her concert right about now. this is earlier before the show, and you can see the long lines of people. there are a lot of people there. lizzo heads to inglewood next. thanks so much for watching. our next newscast
