have never written this many tickets at one side show. in the past, they've gone after those doing the donuts. but last night they detained and ticketed all the spectators. this is drone video showing san jose police blocng all the side show participants and spectators from four different directions, so they couldn't drive off. san josece wrote everyone a ticket. we'll come back to this massive crackdown. let's go back to the beginning. started around 11:20 saturday night. hundreds of cars and people blocked off the intersection of virginia and 7th streets. it was a chaotic scene with fireworks, laser beams, four cars spinning donuts all at the same time. after a while they left this intersection and made their way to the intersection of monterey highway. >> it was loud and woke me up, yeah. the cars are breaking and we're turning around, moving fast. it was kind of squeaky. >> reporter: as they were having their fun, they were coordinating their strategies

to block them in. once they closed off every escape route, they moved in. the drivers tried to move out. they 'tgeveo 0 cars. ipants mt the tickets were spectating. they call the parents for 82 minors. they impounded at least 20 cars for participating, which will cost $3,000 to $4,000 to get each one back. police also recovered this ghost gun. >> this is new. hooray for san jose pd. that seems to be a new course of action. thank you to the city of san jose. >> reporter: hughes is fed up with the side shows. she lives next to the intersection. >> hopefully this will send a message that says look, don't come down here. >> reporter: some question why oakland, san francisco, other cities don't go after the

spectators. one oakland officer tells me that's because san jose and antioch are the only two bay area cities that have a law to cite spectators. >> i'm surprised oakland hasn't had that law. they've had the problem for years. >> reporter: oakland public safety committee plans to look at the idea of citing spectators on tuesday and eventually send a proposal to the city council. as for san jose residents, they're happy with the tough crackdown. >> i feel good, so people won't watch anymore. >> reporter: again 720 tickets. each ticket up to a thousand dollars. in san jose i'm da lin kpix 5. at the same time the side show must go on in oakland. it did tonight with video from citizen app. as we've come to expect dangerous conditions out there with people standing in

the road with the cars tearing by. there are no words on any injuries though tonight. elon musk continues to cut costs at twitter. over the weekend he issued more layoffs gutting contracts and monterey tour jobs. many of the content watchdogs learned they would be out of work. many say they expect an increase in misinformation and harmful content on twitter. we don't know how many contractors were let go. but one ucla professor and ex-employee estimate 3,000 contract workers were fired on saturday. federal prosecutors have suggested a 15-year sentence for silicon valley fraudster elizabeth holmes ahead of her court sentencing date this friday. she was convicted in january of criminal fraud. last week her lawyers asked a judge for no more than 18 months of house arrest. but her convictions each carry sentences of up to 20 years. tomorrow tens of thousands

of academic workers from all ten university of california campuses are set to walk off the job. the move could disrupt classes just weeks ahead of final exams. >> betty yu spoke to one person hitting the picket line tomorrow who says they have no choice. >> reporter: evan holloway is a clinical psychologist working on public health research at ucfs. on monday you'll find him on the picket line. alongside 2,700 workers. total 48,000 workers including academic student employees like t.a.s are expected to go on strike across the state. >> we are all asking for higher pay. as you're familiar, inflation has hit the united states in california and almost up 9% inflation over the past year with what uc has offered in terms of pay. it's an effective pay cut. >> reporter: post dogs in particular are asking for a

$70,000 minimum salary, which is comparable to what stanford university pays. currently they make around $52,000. he said it's hardly enough to afford the high cost of living. >> one thing that's important to me, it's something that's coming. and becoming a father. we're liking for sty pens and they're offering $200 a month. >> reporter: those who teach and grade papers, perform cut-edge research that generates billions for the uc system says their work drives innovation. alleging the university of california has engaged in unfair labor practices including showing up to the sessions unprepared. >> it is important to me and it is a place where i know can be better. so it is frustrating. frankly i would rather be focused on the research. >> reporter: they said in a statement in part, many agreements have been reached on key issues such as the

respectful key environment and health and safety matters. we're committed to negotiate in good faith. they added if a strike does occur, we anticipate that classes will remain as scheduled. officers will be open. the campus will provide normal or equivalent services. betty yu kpix 5. and now to a quick update on the local midterm races. the votes are still being counted like the one you see behind me. but still no resolution to any of the big races we've been watching like the mayors in oakland, san jose, or the d.a. race. a few, but just a few of the ballots were lost until they were discovered today on the side of the road in santa clara county. once they were found, the registrar turned the information over to the post office, which will be doing an inest gase. the registrar will see if the ballots are eligible

take a look at this plane that ended up perched on its nose today at the reed hill airport in san jose. the single engine cessna came in hard on the runway around 3:30 this afternoon. luckily no reports of anyone being hurt. but this is just the latest safety incident at the airport that has been facing criticism. two planes collided during an air show causing a huge explosion and a rain of debris. >> six people were on board the two vintage planes. at the time there are no survivors. as reported jd miles explains the crash is raising new concerns over the safety of air shows. >> reporter: smoldering wreckage is all that remains tonight after two vintage war planes collided midair at a dallas air show, horrifying onlookers. >> i just see flames and everything go flying. >> reporter: the ntsb is
