i'm elise preston, cbs news, new york. . it's monday, november 14th, 2022. this is the "cbs morning news." control of congress, a huge win for democrats in nevada means they'll hang onto the u.s. senate. high stakes meeting. the tense one on one between president biden and his chinese counterpart. what they'll be discussing. and deadly attack. a half dozen people are killed in an explosion in turkey's largest city. the latest on the investigation. well, good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the battle for control of congress. we now know the democrats will keep control of the senate after last week's election. in a tight race in nevada cbs

news projects that catherine cortez masto is the winner over adam laxalt. it gives democrats 50 seats and control of the senate. a democratic victory would give them outright control. bradley blackburn has more of a look. >> reporter: good morning. democrats will be fighting for that 51st seat in georgia because a true majority would give them the full control over the makeup of senate committees and it would mean joe manchin's vote would no longer be a deal breaker. that's why republicans are going all in too. democrats took a victory lap sunday after catherine cortez masto's projected win gave control of the senate. >> a victory and a vindication

for democrats. >> i feel good about where we are. >> reporter: some republicans linked their party's underwhelming showing to former president donald trump who's expected to announce another presidential run this week. >> those who are most closely aligned with the former president under performed. those who are talking about the future, who managed their states well, they over performed. >> reporter: a growing group of senate republicans is also calling for a delay in this week's planned leadership elections. south carolina's lindsey graham tweeted all republicans should be focused on winning in georgia and trying to understand the mid-term elections before senate leadership elections move onto the 2024 race. others disagree. >> i think it's better we move forward with the elections so we can focus again on the georgia runoff. >> cbs news projects the house leans republican. >> they've given up because the quality of our candidates. >> it's sad we didn't get the true red wave. >> reporter: lawmakers return to

washington. among the items to be discussed, a funding bill to keep things operating, additional assistance to ukraine and emergency aid for florida and puerto rico after raines hurricanes. arriving in washington today newly elected members of congress. they are there for orientation. they can't vote on legislation until the next congress officially begins but, anne-marie, they are already taking the reins as the new balance of power takes shape. >> bradley blackburn in new york. thank you. >> you bet. this morning president biden is meeting with agenda. mr. biden arrived on the island of bali yesterday after meeting with asian leaders in cambodia.

former president donald trump wanted the irs to investigate his perceived enemies. john kelly said trump's demands were part of a broader pattern of trying to use the justice department and his authority against people critical of him. kelly said they included former fbi director james comey. kelly said he told trump he could not do that. a trump spokeswoman denied trump ever tried using the irs. the head of the u.s. customs and border protection is out of a job. president biden accepted the resignation of christopher magnus. he had been under pressure to step down. it comes as an all-time record number of migrants is entering the u.s. from mexico. the government 125is.4 million border encounters this year. officials looking into what caused a horrific mid-air collision at a dallas air show say they wanted to know why the

aircrafts had the same altitude just before they slammed into each other. this was the fiery aftermath that left six people dead. one historic military plane crashed into another before both flames went down in a burst of flames. j.d. miles has more on the crash. >> reporter: smoldering wreckage is all that remains after two vintage war planes collided mid-air horrifying onlookers. >> i just see flames and everything go flying. >> reporter: the ntsb is investigating. michael graham is with the ntsb. >> do we think there was a mechanical failure, pilot error as part of this, it's too early to tell. >> we had an air collision. >> video captured by spectators will be vital to finding out what happened says former ntsb chair and cbs aviation analyst

robert somwalt. >> what did you think happened? >> the p-63 was approaching the b 60 which prohibited that pilot from seeing the b-17. >> both retired american airlines pilots. they were aboard the b-17 bomber. remarkably no one on the ground was hurt. >> what does this say about the future of air shows? >> i think the air shows are a very important part of recognizing our heritage. air shows can typically be done safely. >> reporter: still, these were very experienced pilots at the controls which raises questions about whether vintage war planes are better off on display than in the air. j.d. miles, cbs news, dallas. an investigation is underway after an airline passenger eventually brought two box cutters on board a flight.

jude." actor alec baldwin has filed a lawsuit in the "rust" movie shooting. the bbc reports six people were killed and dozens injured when a bomb exploded in istanbul. one person was arrested after yesterday's blafs which took place on a busy street in the center of the turkish city. a woman who was sitting on a nearby bench for about 40 minutes left minutes before the explosion. they say she is a syrian national who claims to have been trained by kurtish militants. the associated press said one person killed and seven others hurt at a shooting at a party in omaha, nebraska. a confrontation took place at what they are calling an after hours party. officers found two people with gunshot wounds that were rushed to the hospital and one died. the injuries to the other victims are not considered life threatening. no word on any arrests.

most amazing living things. we are talking about giant sequoia and redwood trees. there's an effort to save them. charlie demar shows us. >> reporter: as fires and drought fueled by climate change threaten the ma guess stick sequoias and redwoods that have lived for thousands of years, what's growing in this out of the way greenhouse in northern michigan could help save the species. >> what is the goal? >> real goal for me is to protect and propagate as many different species as we can. >> reporter: the team at the arc angel ancient tree archives are in a race against climate change and the toll it's taking on ancient trees. they collect samples from sequoias and redwoods, clone them and replanned them places that need to be reforested. the castle fire in 2020 ripped through the southern sierra nevadas claiming an estimated 10% of the world's largest

sequoias and one of the largest redwoods left in california called the water fall tree. >> the water fall tree is a great example why we're in a hurry to do this. we collected genetics from that. we were able to take some of those clones and give them back to the community. >> reporter: just as importantly they are archiving tree's genetic materials so they'll be available to clone. david millark is jared's dad and co-founder of the project. >> this is a really, really special tree. >> reporter: these are marvels, he said. >> it grew 6 feet this year. >> reporter: because they grow ten times faster than most others and capture massive amounts of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas. >> these trees uptake co2 ten times faster than almost any species of tree on earth. when you remove the excess co2 from the atmosphere, these are the champions or the workhorses of doing just that. >> reporter: some of the newest sprouts here come from clippings
