well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the midterm elections are already a week old and already the presidential race is expected to kick into high gear. today former president donald trump is going to make a special announcement from his mar-a-lago estate. he's expected to announce he'll run for president. it comes after republicans had their latest defeat in arizona. cbs news can now predict katie hobbs will beat kari lake. elise preston looks at the latest. this expected announcement comes as some fellow republicans had cautioned trump to wait until the georgia consequential runoff in three weeks while others question whether he should continue to be the party's bearer. >> after weeks of teasing, today

former president donald trump is expected to officially announce another run for the white house. it comes on the heels of an underwhelming 2022 midterms for his party. >> this election was the funeral to the republican parties as we have known it. the republican party as we have known it is dead. >> reporter: while the republicans are within striking distance to narrowly take the house, the democrats have clinched another step toward taking the house. katie hobbs beat out kari lake. >> these elections have shown that the maga republican way is not where the american people want to be. >> reporter: recently the former president lashed out at the potential 0 2024 rivals ron desantis and glenn youngkin. monday, another potential challenger, former vice president mike pence told abc news he was angered by trump's tweets aimed at him during the january 6th capitol attack.

>> the president's words were reckless. it's clear he decided to be part of the problem. >> reporter: the january 6 committee is considering its next steps after he failed to appear for yesterday's testimony under subpoena. the former president has sued to block the subpoena. trump's announcement today is also the same day pence releases his memoir, which is expected to criticize his former boss. anne-marie? >> elise preston in new york. elise, thank you very much. well, a former university of virginia football player is under arrest, accused of gunning down three fellow students and setting off a campus-wide lockdown. last night thousands attended a candlelight vigil to pay their respects for the slain students. deborah alvarez has more on what we know about the mass shooting. >> reporter: in the middle of a press conference university of virginia police chief timothy longo heard the news everyone had been waiting for. >> we just received information that the suspect is in custody. take a moment to thank god. >> reporter: authorities say 22-year-old christopher darnell

jones jr. was apprehended without incident in suburban richmond about 80 miles from campus. >> we've charged him with three counts of second-degree murder. >> reporter: campus police say lavel davis jr., d'sean perry, and dev inchandler were killed when they returned from a field trip. sophomore ryan lynch was on the bus with jones. she said he yelled at some students before opening fire. >> and they kept coming, more and more gunshots, and so we thought he was going to shoot everyone in the bus. >> reporter: the suspect's father chris jones sr. last spoke to his son a month ago. >> he said people were picking on him or whatever. he didn't know how to handle it. i told him to just go to school, don't pay them no mind. >> reporter: the shooting caused a 12-hour lockdown here on campus. students had to shelter in place overnight as authorities searched for the suspect building by building.

>> we received notification like run, hide. i thought, oh, my god. >> reporter: the university assessment team was aware of jones from two previous incidents in the last two year. one was about a weapon, a gun, though, not found, and a hazing incident, but in that case, the witnesses did not cooperate. deborah alvarez, cbs news, charlottesville, virginia. there was a frightening scene in kentucky when a school bus with students went over an embankment and flipped over in a ditch. 18 students and the driver were hurt yesterday, including some in critical condition. the age of students range from elementary to high school. police are investigating the cause of the crash. and there's been another setback to president biden's plan to forgive student loan debt from millions of borrowers. yesterday a federal appeals court agreed to a preliminary injunction, temporarily halting the program. it will be put on hold while an appeal in a separate case is decided. last week a federal judge in texas blocked the program saying it was unconstitutional. the biden administration is

appealing that judge's ruling and is likely to appeal this one too. the white house says 26 million people have applied for debt relief so far. it was a big day for president biden on the world stage. the commander in chief had his first in-person meeting with the leader of china since becoming president. nancy cordes takes a look at the high-stakes talks and a range of crucial and tense topics. >> reporter: it was a meeting two years in the making, both presidents vowing to de-escalate tensions as the rest of the world looked on. >> i'm not looking for conflict. i'm looking to manage this competition responsibly. >> reporter: president joe biden and president skxi jinping lead the two biggest powers and they've been publicly at odds over trade, technology, and spying. >> the world expects the united states will properly handle the relationship. >> reporter: in the 3 1/2-hour meeting the two men discussed

russian aggression and taiwanese independence. china's military has stepped up its drills near the self-governed island, and after the meeting they called u.s. interference in china/taiwanese affair as red line. but in a press conference, mr. biden expressed optimism. >> i absolutely believe there need not be a new cold war, and i do not think there's any imminent attempt on the part of china to invade taiwan. >> reporter: both leaders are here in bali for a g20 summit for a meeting among the top officials of the 20 largest economies. vladimir putin was a notable no-show. the white house is hoping to use his absence to push china to condemn russia's faltering invasion of ukraine. >> i found him the way he's always been, direct and straightforward. and some breaking news overnight. the prime minister of cambodia is leaving the g20 summit after

testing positive for covid. it's raising some concerns because he met with president biden during a gathering of world leaders in his country's capital over the weekend. the cambodian leader said he tested positive last night, and it was confirmed by a doctor. the white house says mr. biden tested negative today and is not considered a close contact as defined by the cdc. and we're finding out how much damage hurricane nicole caused in florida last week. officials in volusia county say that the category 1 storm caused an estimated $522 million in damage. several homes in the daytona beach area collapsed into the ocean. dozens more were damaged and some condo complexes were evacuated and deemed unsafe. severe beach erosion from hurricane ian in september made homes along florida's east coast more vulnerable to the impact of nicole. coming up, passenger refunds, why some airlines are paying back travelers, and which domestic airlines is giving back millions. and ready for blast-off.

"the washington post" reports the white house will seek more covid funding during the lame deck session of congress. sources tell "the post" the biden administration is finalizing a "for about $10 billion in public health funds

by the end of the year. it would mostly go toward covid response efforts and the development of new vaccines and treatments. republican lawmakers have been reluctant to approve more funding. >> "the new york times" says rudy giuliani will not face federal charges for allegedly violating lobbying laws. in a letter to a judge, federal prosecutors in new york said they made the decision after reviewing evidence seized in raids on giuliani's home and office last year. the investigation was focused on whether giuliani illegally lobbied the trump administration on behalf of ukrainian officials while he was looking for their help investigating trump rivals. and the idaho statesman said police have found four students dead in a house near campus. they found the three women and one man sunday after responding to a report of an unconscious person. police have opened a homicide investigation but have not said

biggest companies. this time amazon plans for record job cuts. wendy gillette has that story and more in today's "moneywatch" report. the markets lost ground as there had been reports of big gains. hopes had started to rise that inflation may be easing. the dow lost 211 points, the nasdaq slid 127 points, and the s&p 500 sank 35 points. amazon is preparing for the largest layoffs in the company's history. multiple reports say as many as 10,000 employees will lose their jobs as soon as this week. the online retail giant stock has plummeted 40% since the beginning of the year. another hit for crypto trading site ftx. federal prosecutors in new york are now reportedly examining what caused the company to collapse and how it handled customer funds. financial investigators in the bahamas where ftx is based are also looking into what happened. and ralphie's house is going

and it's considered one of the biggest successes so far in the now nine months-long war. a school official was told about the dangers at the uvalde school well before officers made their way into that classroom. cnn says phone recordings sew that acting police chief mariano pargas was told a 10-year-old girl called and said she was in a room full of victims and they needed help. this was allegedly 30 minutes before the police went into that classroom. pargas said he was unable to comment publicly. and comedian jay leno is recovering after a terrifying fire that left him with serious burns. the former late night talk show host told the "a.p." he was burned in a gasoline fire, but he didn't give any other details. the 72-year-old said he's okay and will need a week or two to get back on his feet. leno is known for his vast collection of cars that are housed at a garage in burbank, california.
