>> absolutely. and i will climb a ladder and all heights to make sure our great viewers know a way to get involved . to really hit a problem in our community and make things better, right? we know we are coming off the pandemic, we know people are struggling out there, and that's why the people at this great food bank in santa rosa are working to get the shelves full and stocked up here they are powered not only by amazing volunteers, but by a great spirit of knowing that when we are in a community we step forward when we see something, we step forward. why is this so important? >> we are seeing more families than ever look to the food bank, because they are in such need this holiday season. >> something powerful to me, food insecurity is not something you think would just hit just them or them, after the pandemic. our neighbors might be experiencing this. >> really though, our unemployment rate has been the lowest in a long time, and
3:03 pm
people are still struggling to fuel the basics , so we are seeing people come more to food distributions like this, month to month. >> i have spent the whole morning here, and i love the words, hope and love, and it has nothing to do with feeling shame here. you have created an environment, where people can come volunteering get the help they need, and people won't feel shame in asking for help expect all clients are the same. they register one time, they give us the name and basic contact information, and then they have access to groceries and diapers, and anything else that we can offer to ease the burden of increase of cost and everything. >> why do you do you do? >> i love coming to work every day. i truly love it. it's a really creative, innovative, well the best part is the welcoming space. it's a soft place to land, and they bow out when they don't need help, so

years now. i would recommend any crime that would leave you in a situation like this. it humbles you, it sobers you. >> even after all these years behind bars, terrence ford still struggles with a life he calls hell. >> it's meant to punish you, psychologically, and it does it. >> other than the prison yard, this is pretty much his entire world. a cell, 6 x 10, where the day seemed to blend together, and the only connection to the outside is a tiny window sealed shut. expect not being able to go outside or hear the birds or see trees blowing in the wind, you know, that gets to you. >> even the before, arriving

at a maximum four level state prison, his life was not much better. >> i remember i was 3, walking down the street by myself in my pampers, and my mother didn't even have a clue of where i was. >> growing up in richmond, he was surrounded by drugs, gangs, and violence. he was in what he calls, the norm. >> i walked past bodies that had been shot to death. i've seen bodies lying dead on the street that no one called the police to come get. >> by the time he was 18, he was already serving his first stint in prison for burglary. then, in 2008, he held a driver at gunpoint, taking him with him. that resulted in a kidnapping charge, and a sentence of 26 years to life. >> something i thought was simple turned into the worst
3:08 pm
mistake of my life. >> about 60% of adult suffer from some type of childhood trauma compared to 97% among prison inmates. even so, it's a topic that's rarely discussed within prison walls. but that might be changing. >> volunteers, are you ready? >> for the horseman is the founder of a nonprofit called about compassion prison project. for the last three years she has been educating officials and inmates about the long-term effects of childhood trauma. >> are you ready to face her past? >> studies have shown early life abuse is linked to a host of psychological disorders , including depression, anxiety, and ptsd. >> being told you are not good enough by your family, being beaten up by your parents, this
3:09 pm
is damaging to not only their well-being, but their ability to perform well in school, their ability to you know, keep a job, to stay focused. we have more things in common than we have differences. >> horseman says she cares about these men even though they have committed heinous crimes. she cares, because she too suffered from physical and emotional abuse as a child. >> i shoplifted, i sold drugs, i did things that really went against my own moral compass. we are going to dive into your past right now, what happened to you as a little boy? >> her behavior, she says, was a direct result of her trauma, a message she's trying to pass on to the men at salinas. horseman starts by putting prisoners in a circle, then she reads a set of questions from the cdc's ace quiz, which stands for adverse childhood experiences. >> if a parent or other adult in the household often or very often pushed, grabbed,
3:10 pm
slapped, or through something that you, step inside the circle. >> the rougher your childhood, the higher the trinity ascorbic speak a.c.e. score. >> if you had no one to protect you, step inside the circle. >> four more to 19's and you are at risk for high stress, which increases 460%. suicide, 1220%. >> step inside the circle. >> you are also seven times more likely to go to prison. >> trauma separates us from ourselves. >> no surprise, almost everyone here scores above four. some hit as many as nine. >> that's another one. >> ford gets four questions, then another seven tailored to
3:11 pm
prisoners. >> you are blind to trauma that you think you can handle, mentally, so i was definitely living in blindness. >> coming to terms with what they have done and why, horseman says, helps start the process of healing. >> i can't remember hearing my mom saying something i love you. >> lowering their trauma will lower your chances of reoffending. >> prisoners will come home someday, do you want a good or a good criminal? >> for ford, it was a moment of realization that he is not alone. >> it showed that no matter what you go through, there is always someone here that has gone through it with you. >> even though his road to recovery is just beginning, he is hopeful knowing that and shackling the chains of the past is the right step to freedom . >> such a powerful story where
3:12 pm
all the men are standing in that circle. what did you notice as far as their mood as each of them started taking that step? and an additional step, then another, then another? some took as many as nine steps. >> nine, eight, seven, many people scored really hard on that a.c.e. quiz . many of them were emotional, it was very eye-opening for them. these people, their entire lives, they were told they were bad people. then all of a sudden they are being told there might be a reason why you're doing this, you are a trauma survivor. so as you can imagine, that sort of opens up their eyes. many of them have told me that this was the best data they've ever had, that's how emotional it was. >> it almost felt cathartic. >> it really was. and again, these are people who have not thought about this, they don't have a language or context of this . this allows them to talk about it, especially in a place

like prison, or vulnerability is not something you want to show too much. and seeing everyone in that exercise, taking the steps forward, you get to see everyone who has gone through what you've gone through, and that allows you to talk about with other people. >> we subpart one, and part two, how about part three? >> it's a fascinating look, right? all these stories so far have focused on was being done within the prison. now we will take a look at what the prison is doing outside prison walls. it's still inside, but we are talking about the families of the prisoners , the wives of these prisoners who have to deal with coming into this world twice a week sometimes and having to deal with this reality that isn't theirs, but guilty by association. >> powerful seers, powerful story. up next well live to the red empire food bank in santa rosa, as we start our donation drive how you can help bay area families.
