what will be a slim majority. it's a narrower margin than what many expected before the midterm elections. earlier this week republican lawmakers nominated kevin mccarthy to lead their party meaning that he will now likely be the next speaker of the house. a formal vote is still needed when the new congress convenes in january. elise preston is in new york with more. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. the nominations come as the gop is divided over its future after an underwhelming midterms and former president trump's announcement for a 2024 white house run. republicans are taking a victory lap after narrowly clinching control of the house. >> one party democrat rule in washington is finished. we have fired nancy pelosi. >> reporter: on fox news channel's "hannity" gop leader kevin mccarthy downplayed challenges to a potential house speakership after his fractured caucus voted to nominate him this week. current house speaker nancy

pelosi is expected to address her future plans today, but some house democrats already urging her to run again for leadership at the end of the month. >> i'd still love to have nancy pelosi for sure. >> reporter: in the senate, long-serving republican leader mitch mcconnell fought off a late challenge from florida's rick scott to win another term. >> i'm not in any way offended by having an opponent or having a few votes in opposition. >> reporter: the gop's divisions are now on full display after democrats won control of the senate in a midterm election that didn't produce a predicted red wave. that infighting is spilling over in the 2024 election cycle. a day after former president trump officially launched another white house run, his former vice president and potential primary challenger said this to cbs news' "face the nation" -- >> the president and i parted amicably. i believe as we look to the future that we'll hav better chices. >> reporter: top gop donors have indicated they want another

candidate. blackstone ceo steven schwartzman told axios he'll back someone else, while hedge fund billionaire ken griffin is now openly backing florida governor ron desantis. now president biden issued a statement last night congratulating leader mccarthy on winning the house majority and offered to work with house republicans. anne-marie? >> elise preston in new york. thank you. be sure to tune in to "cbs mornings." we'll have much more from former vice president mike pence's interview with "face the nation" moderator margaret brennan. tensions in europe have cooled a bit as poland has acknowledged that the missile that struck its territory was not fired by russia. the u.s. and its allies aren't letting russia off the hook. debra alfarone has more. >> reporter: the explosion that killed two people in poland most likely came from a ukrainian defense missile. top u.s. military officials saying it happened while ukraine was fending off a barrage of missiles from russia.

>> the world knows that russia bears ultimate responsibility for this incident. >> reporter: russia launched upward of 100 missiles on tuesday, its largest wave since the invasion began in february. the target -- ukraine's energy grid. >> the deliberate targeting of the civilian power grid causing excessive collateral damage and unnecessary suffering on the civilian population is a war crime. >> reporter: with winter fast approaching, over a quarter of ukraine is without power. in newly liberated kherson, residents came together in the central square to reconnect, charge their phones, and receive much-needed food and supplies. >> we decided to come to kherson because we figured there would be work here for us, and the need was great. as you can see, it is. >> reporter: speaking from the g20 in indonesia, president biden says russia needs to realize the world is united

against its war. >> russia can and should stop the war. they could stop it tomorrow. >> reporter: the president is asking congress for $37 billion in emergency aid to continue supporting ukraine. debra alfarone, cbs news, washington. a terrifying scene in california. an suv swerved into the wrong lane and then slammed into a group of police recruits in the midst of a training exercise. danya bacchus has the details. >> reporter: the l.a. county sheriff says 25 los angeles county sheriff's department recruits are hurt after this suv drove into them while they were on a training run. >> tragedy struck our department. they were running in formation, heading northbound, when a vehicle that was traveling southbound veered into the northbound lanes and struck the formation. >> reporter: the recruits were hit just before 6:30 this morning near their training facility in whittier, a suburb a few miles southeast of los angeles.

>> 25 recruits were injured, and 16 were minor injuries, four were moderate, stable condition. five were from critical condition. >> it is hard to see because these young people are getting ready to go put themselves on the line of danger in their career. and who knows that while you're training to do that you're actually in harm's way. >> reporter: the injured recruits received quick medical treatment. crews working at a nearby fire station heard the crash and rushed to the scene. >> the chaos that ensued looked like an airplane wreck. there were so many bodies scattered everywhere in different states of injury that it was pretty traumatic for all individuals involved. >> reporter: the 22-year-old suv driver suffered minor injuries. >> we're going to look at the totality of this incident from an intentional act to distracted driving to possibly impaired driving to accident. >> reporter: police say the driver is being detained while the investigation continues. danya bacchus, cbs news, whittier, california.

we are learning new details about the weekend murder of four university of idaho students in an off-campus house. police say that the three women and one man were stabbed with a knife. they have not identified a suspect or found a weapon. they also continue to say that it was a targeted attack, but they walked back a previous comment that there's no threat to the public, and the suspect is still out there. they told people to be aware of their surroundings. two other people were found alive and unhurt in that house. a makeshift memorial of flowers and stuffed animals left for the four students is growing on campus. meanwhile, the student accused of killing three university of virginia football players was held without bond during his arraignment. former football player christopher darnell jones jr. appeared by video yesterday in court. prosecutors said that a witness on the bus where the shooting took place sunday told police that the gunman targeted specific victims and even shot one of them as he slept. the school canceled its upcoming home game this weekend.

a class-action lawsuit is accusing bankrupt cryptoexchange ftx of misleading customers and costing investors billions. the suit filed in federal court in florida alleges that u.s. customers sustained $11 billion in damages and accuses ftx of targeting unsophisticated investors. several athletes and celebrities who promoted the exchange are named as defendants including tom brady, steph curry, and larry david. storm warnings are in effect this morning in several northern states as a potentially historic lake-effect snowstorm moves across the great lakes region. snow covered parts of indiana and michigan yesterdays th storm makes its way east. forecasters say there could be paralyzing conditions in buffalo, new york, where more than four feet of snow could fall. there will also be strong winds that could make traveling dangerous through the weekend. coming up now, protecting same-sex marriage.

"the washington post" reports north korea fired another ballistic missile toward the sea according to south korea. the reported launch came hours after north korea threatened to conduct, quote, fiercer military responses. that followed president biden's recent commitment to defend u.s. allies, south korea and japan, en with nucleaapons. this is north korea's first llistiile launn eight days after a barrage of tests in recent months. and "the wisconsin state journal" says a man who killed six people when he drove through a christmas parade was sentenced

to life in prison with no chance of release. a judge ordered 40-year-old darrell brooks jr. to be moved to another courtroom yesterday after he became disruptive before he was sentenced. brooks drove an suv through the parade in waukesha last november after having a fight with his girlfriend. dozens of people were also injured. "politico" says a bill to protect same-sex marriage and interracial marriage under federal law cleared a critical senate hurdle. 12 republicans and 50 democrats voted yesterday to move the respect for marriage act forward. the house passed its version of the bill earlier this year, although another vote is still needed. a final vote in the senate could come this week. president biden has said that he will sign it once it is passed. still to come, ivy league disruption. why two big universities are pulling out of an annual college ranking.

families deal with high inflation. the dow was down 39. nasdaq lost 174. s&p 500 dropped 32 points. amazon has confirmed that layoffs have begun at the company. it's been reported that the e-commerce giant plans to cut around 10,000 jobs. the initial cuts will impact roles on the devices and services team with the company announcing it decided to consolidate some teams and programs. many laid-off workers took to linkedin to share the news of their job cuts. if you haven't claimed your stimulus child tax credit or earned income tax credit and are entitled to funds, today is last day to claim the money. the irs alerted nine million people last month they could still claim the funds. people who are eligible must file a tax form by the end of today. citing flaws in the way the ratings are determined, yale and harvard announced they are withdrawing from the "u.s. news

white house christmas tree being cut down at evergreen acres christmas tree farm in pennsylvania. the fir was planted at the farm 20 years ago as a seedling, and now weighs one ton. it was gently hoisted onto a trailer so that it can make the journey to the white house where it will bring cheer in the blue room. jay leno's doctor says the comedian is in good spirits after surgery for serious burns. leno has undergone one surgery and will undergo another later on this week. he suffered burns to his face, hands, and chest when a fire erupted as he worked on a vintage car last weekend. his doctor said leno had some facial wounds that are a little bit deeper and more concerning. he said leno is up and walking and, of course, telling jokes. new trouble for actor kevin spacey. he now faces seven additional sexual assault charges in the uk. the charges stem from alleged incidents that took place between 2001 and 2004 with the same alleged victim. the 63-year-old has already
