f0 now at 11:00, it is an employee lock out, literally. twitter employees shut out of their san francisco headquarters. why an ultimatum from elon musk seems to have back fired. [ applause ] making way for the next wave of the democratic party. what we know about man ex shs. >>thn to write a letter. i think it speaks to miss holmes persuasive nature. that she has a lot of people in her corner. also, she was the youngest billionaire in the heart of silicon valley, and now elizabeth holmes just hours away from a possible prison sentence. tonight hundreds of people and even a u.s. senator are pleading with a judge to go easy on her. we'll get to those stories, but first, we're only a week out from thanksgiving meaning a lot of families are preparing to get together. but for a lot
11:01 pm
of people, this time of year is extremely hard. maybe especially so now. the covid-19 pandemic has left millions of children across the world without a parent or care giver. andrea nakano is here with more on how bay area families who have lost loved ones are coping this time of year. andrea? >> reporter: sarah, i spoke with one mother tonight, and she says the holidays are the worst. she lost her partner and father of her son in 2014, and she says life hasn't been the same sense. >> every holiday, every father's day, his dad's birthday. his birthday, you know? the dad will never be there again. >> reporter: for the last eight years, lori valdez has dealt with the pain of losing a loved one. she attended a vigil where students were urging action on the mental health crisis in santa clara county. >> it's been really hard. my son has grown up without his
11:02 pm
dad. he's cried many times. still now, he'll, like at random just shut down and start crying. i just want my dad. >> reporter: valdezless partner antonio died tragically in an officer involved shooting when her son was just eight years old. >> he makes up stories of stuff they did that they never did. i guess that's his way of trying to keep his dad's memory alive. >> reporter: in a study done around the world during the pandemic, a stanford psychiatrist says women and the younger generation are having the most trouble dealing with anxiety. he says recovery comes in steps. >> in general, avoiding things that make you anxious only makes you more anxious about them, so take one step after another to reengage with the parts of life out in the real world that you think you can engage with. >> reporter: because of the rise in anxiety during the pandemic, doctors came up with a way to reach as many people
11:03 pm
as they can. dr. speigel developed an app that will help reduce stress and improve your sleep. >> we found in our studies of it, that people get about a 35% relief in their self-reported stress in 15 minutes, so you'll know if it helps you or not. >> reporter: for lori, what keeps her going is keeping the memory of her partner alive, but also being the support her son needs. >> the kids left fatherless, nobody talks about them. they're the unheard, you know? the unheard victims that never get acknowledged. >> reporter: valdez is working on creating a trust line. it's a non-policemennal health crisis line that helps people suffering some kind of crisis in hopes of saving lives like the one of her partner. andrea nakano, kpix 5.

>> all right, thank you so much. [ applause ] house speaker nancy pelosi getting a standing ovation from all members of the house after announcing she is stepping down from her leadership role. her decision comes after last month's attack on her husband at their house in san francisco. paul pelosi is recovering at home after that intruder attack. and this announcement works the end of an era. pelosi has spend more than 35 years in washington. she made history by becoming the first female house speaker. >> when i came to the congress in 1987, there were 12 democratic women. now there are over 90, and we want more. the new members of our democratic caucus will be about 75% women, people of color, and lgbtq. and we have brought more voices to the decision making table. when i entered leadership in 2002,
11:05 pm
there were eight of us. today there are 17. >> one of pelosi's closest friends is the congresswoman from san jose, and she says she understands pelosi's decision to spend more time with her family. >> her record is unmatched in the history of our country of speakers. and not only a national leader, but recognized and respected around the world. there was a really, a deep regard for this woman that put the constitution and our democracy first. >> and tomorrow, new york congressman jeffries plans to make a formal bid to serve as house minority leader. right now he's the fifth highest ranking democrat in the house, and if selected, he would be the first black lawmaker to lead a party in congress. first twitter employees were laid off. then the ones left were told you need to come back to the office and work from here. now, the the company is saying don't come into work
11:06 pm
because we've locked you out. elon musk closed alof twitter's buildings at least a week, that includes the headquarters here in san francisco. this comes after musk issued an ultimatum to employees who haven't already been fired, saying they had to commit to a new, quote hard core approach to working at the company or quit. and apparently hundreds of twitter employees took him up on that offer today. >> elon musk now seems to be afraid that some people may end up actually doing damage on their way out. it's really hard to tell what is going to happen, right? a lot of people who have worked at twitter or follow the tech industry closely are convinced there aren't enough people that work for twitter now to be able to keep the site running reliably, and at some point it will stop working correctly. >> well, doesn't seem like elon musk is too worried about that. in fact, he says all this press
11:07 pm
and publicity is helping. he's been tweeting since news of the office lock out broke writing things like and we hit another all time high in twitter usage. lol. we have sports coming up in mfortae conditions right at the have to practice in? the temperatures in monday night's to be warm, but to get acclimated to the altitude, tough weather came with it. a person found dead after a fire at an east bay home tonight. why firefighters say it was no accident. and she promised her silicon valley company would change the world. now elizabeth holmes is a convicted felon and hours away from learning her fate. and tonight is the peak of the leonid meteor shower. you can really look in any direction and catch up to 50 meteors per hour. temperatures already dropping down to the

tonight a man is dead after a house fire in concord, and firefighters think this was a case of arson. the home of euclid avenue went up in flames around 5:45 this afternoon. firefighters knocked it down within an hour, but then found a body inside. >> it's an arson fire. there were multiple sets throughout the house along with a set in the garage and the outbuilding shed. >> we still don't know who the man is, but concord police are
11:11 pm
now investigating. in january, elizabeth holmes walked out of a san jose courtroom guilty of four fraud charges, and now her sentencing is just hours away. her blood testing start up, theranos, was a silicon valley unicorn that came crashing down. prosecutors want her behind bars for a long time, but her defense is putting up a fight to keep her at home, and they recruited dozens of people to help. >> reporter: attorney steve clark has been following the elizabeth holmes case since day one. >> she's someone that people wanted to know more about. people wanted to understand what made her tick, and you saw that with the national media and documentaries and movies made about miss holmes because she is an incredibly compelling figure. >> reporter: to help sway the judge, her defense team submitted photos and letters of support written by more than 100 people. one of those people, new jersey senator cory booker. he wrote a letter
11:12 pm
praising her thoughtful focus and determination to make a difference. he wrote, she was not only sincere about her interests, but a person that would dedicate herself to making progress in the world. >> that's an unusual person to write a letter. a lot of times, politics won't do that because they don't want blowback later. i was very surprised to see cory booker, united states senator, writing a letter of recommendation under these circumstances, but i think that speaks to miss holmes' very persuasive nature. >> reporter: clark says it's not unusual to see character letters like these. what makes these so come pelling is the number of letters from very significant people in the community rallying behind her. >> she also got support from people from theranos that may have lost money as well. i think what the defense is doing here is portraying miss holmes as someone who's worthy of a second chance, and shouldn't go to prison for a significant period of time.
11:13 pm
>> reporter: there are letters from actress ricky lander action and an ex-cdc chief that helped eradicate smallpox, and venture capitalist timothy draper who wrote holmes a million dollar check. the cnet editor at large says he's not surprised to see so many people supporting her. >> a lot of times, people we view as monsters are still human beings to other people, right? she may have caused a lot of harm. she may have ruined a number of lives. but she still is a daughter and a mother and a wife and a friend to a lot of people. >> reporter: one of the biggest questions hanging over the case, her pregnancy. clark says the judge may allow her to delay her sentence until after she's given birth and bonded with her child. holmes wants 18 months of house arrest while prosecutors want 15 years. >> miss holmes never really
11:14 pm
took accountability for her actions. i was a business surprised that she wasn't more remorseful and accountable and responsible for the conduct that she engaged in. >> reporter: there's also the message her sentence will send about fraud in silicon valley. >> if she doesn't end up spending a lot of time in jail, i think the message about what the responsibility of silicon valley entrepreneurs is and the responsibility of venture capitalists and all these people that enable them is going to get a little muddy, right? they won't feel maybe as responsible to make sure things are done right, and instead say well, the worst that will happen is i'll get locked in my home for awhile. >> reporter: clark says it may be up to holmes herself to convince the judge to give her a lighter sentence. >> the court has a lot of information before it to make a very difficult call, and miss holmes herself will have the opportunity to address the court and throw herself on the mercy of the court. so it will

associating. it's like mad libs. >> it is 11:00 and some change at night. >> exactly. let's take a look at the big picture pattern. why the winds are going to pick up? let's check out the big picture. the winds will off offshore and stronger as a system that's dropping down through idaho, it will miss us, but it's close enough to produce the gusty winds. they'll pick up throughout the day tomorrow. the winds the rest of tonight not going to be a major factor. they'll be fairly calm to start the day on friday. but the winds pick up, especially inland and north bay and east bay. we wind the clock forward to tomorrow afternoon, and you can see substantial wind gusts showing up. 25 to 35 for napa and fairfield. these are the lower elevation spots. go up in elevation, say
11:17 pm
vacaville, you get higher gusts, and on the peaks over 40 miles per hour. combine that with low humidity, and it does escalate the fire threat, but we're still kind of coasting on the rain we picked up last week. but we'd like to see more rain. last week's rain helping us out, keeping the fire danger from getting out of control. but unfortunately the rain chance we were so enthusiastic about 24 hours ago has almost completely gone away. still an outside chance it comes monday night into tuesday, but that's a real outside chance. looking dry for the foreseeable future. maybe a more unsettled weather pattern after thanksgiving. clear skies overhead for most of us right now. just a couple of passing cloud. temperature right at 50 in san francisco and san jose. otherwise down to the low to mid-40s already, a bit chilly out there. we drop to the mid to upper 30s around 40 tomorrow morning for inland parts of the bay area and low to mid 40s around the bay. the
