we begin with a state of emergency this morning in parts of western new york state as a dangerously early winter storm moves in. the potentially historic lake-effect snowstorm could dump more than four feet of snow in the buffalo area. near zero visibility is possible in some areas, and it could be so bad the county that encompasses buffalo imposed a driving ban starting last night. the storm has already caused treacherous conditions across the great lakes region as it pummels the area with heavy snow. >> this is considered an extreme event, an extreme weather event. that means it's dangerous. it also means it's life threatening. >> the most intense snowfall is expected to left through tonight with more falling over the weekend. the nfl moved sunday's scheduled game in buffalo between the bills and the cleveland browns to detroit. and for the first time in nearly two decades, democrats in the house will have a new leader. speaker nancy pelosi announced that she's stepping down from her leadership position when the

new congress convenes in january and republicans take control of the house. it marks the end of an era. pelosi is the longest serving democratic leader in the house. in 2007 she became the first woman to ever hold the powerful position of speaker. attention now turns to who might replace her. elise preston is in new york with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning to you. the party's leadership elections are scheduled to take place two weeks from now, but we could find out before the weekend begins who the front runner is. today new york congressman and house democratic caucus chair hakeem jeffries is expected to make a formal bid for democratic leader according to a person familiar with his plans. it comes one day after house speaker nancy pelosi announced she will not seek re-election to leadership. >> for me the hour's come for a new generation to lead the democratic caucus that i so deeply respect. >> reporter: pelosi, now 82 years old, will continue to represent her san francisco

constituents in the house, her longtime number-two majority leader steny hoyer will also step down. >> i think it's always good for a party to have new blood and new invigoration and enthusiasm and new ideas. >> reporter: hoyer and james clyburn announced support for jeffries as well as catherine clark and pete aguilar to leadership posts. earlier this week, cbs news projected that republicans had won the majority of seats in the house, already the caucus laying out its priorities for the next congress which include aggressive investigations into the biden administration. >> rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse will be the primary goal of a republican house oversight committee. >> reporter: house republican leader kevin mccarthy has received his party's nomination to become the next speaker, though it's unclear if he'll get the required 218 votes. in a statement, president biden called speaker pelosi the most hoof representatives in our history. senate republican leader mitch

mcconnell said the impact of speaker pelosi's consequential and path-breaking career will long endure. anne-marie? >> elise preston in new york. thank you. autopsies on the four university of idaho students murdered last weekend in an off-campus house are now complete. the county coroner says they were brutally stabbed to death with a large knife, and it comes as police continue to search for a suspect. christina ruffini has more. >> reporter: more than four days since the gruesome murders at a house off campus at the university of idaho the town of moscow remains in shock. the campus is deserted. the murders are still unsolved. this social media video shows two of the victims at a food truck hours before they died. today the coroner released the cause of death. >> they were all murdered through stabbing with some kind of a -- probably a larger knife. >> reporter: outside the home just across the street from the university, police tape and a small memorial.

many students have already packed up and left early for the thanksgiving break, but classes are still in session. the sister of one of the victims posted a warning on instagram. to the students of the university of idaho staying around campus, leave. your grades are severely less important than your lives. from grieving family members, mounting frustration about the police investigation. >> we're not getting any answers, and we're not going to settle for that. >> reporter: as this close-knit community tries to process the unthinkable. >> the crime and loss of these young lives is simply beyond comprehension. i just want justice for these victims. >> reporter: police say there was no forced entry in the house behind us, and the county prosecutor says there could be more than one suspect. this as the fbi has joined the investigation assisting local law enforcement. christina ruffini, cbs news, moscow, idaho. turning to the war in ukraine where the military says the country's energy infrastructure is under persistent attack by russian missiles and drones. as the season's first snow fell in kyiv, president volodymyr

zelenskyy said about ten million people in the country are without power. chris livesay say the aftermath of one attack in central ukraine. >> reporter: it was a morning like any other for commuters in dnipro, ukraine. until it was shattered by vladimir putin's war. among the wounded, a 15-year-old girl. astonishingly, those aboard the bus were unscathed says the driver, still sitting behind the wheel in shock. "i saw the missile strike right in front of me," he says. "the passengers ran and tried to hide." just imagine what it's like, you're on your way to work in the morning or about to respect to off your kids at school, and then this happens. this is the reality for millions of ukrainians just trying to live their lives during a war. ukrainians now forced to pick up the broken pieces.

cannabis oil in her luggage. her lawyers said that they visited her this week, and she is doing as well as could be expected. the man accused of driving an suv into a group of los angeles county sheriffs and police recruits is facing attempted murder charges. 22-year-old nicholas gutierrez was arrested wednesday. authorities say he veered into the wrong lane striking 25 cadets jogging in the l.a. suburb of whittier. five were injured critically. hundreds of twitter employees are reportedly leaving the company following an ultimatum from new owner elon musk. "the new york times" and other media are reporting that a mass exodus is under way. musk issued an ultimatum wednesday telling employees they had to sign a pledge by 5:00 p.m. yesterday to work longer hours in, quote, extreme hard-core fashion or leave. he was reportedly meeting with key employees trying to convince them to stay. musk laid off thousands of workers since he bought the

those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "wall street journal" reports the convicted founder of failed blood testing startup theranos will be sentenced today. prosecutors are asking a federal judge in california to sentence elizabeth holmes to 15 years in prison and to pay more than $800 million in restitution. her lawyers are seeking an 18-month sentence of home confinement. she was convicted of defrauding investors of millions with false claims about her blood-testing company. "the new york times" says the gunman accused of killing ten people in a racially motivated attack at a buffalo supermarket is expected to plead guilty to all state charges. that according to victims' relatives. 19-year-old payton gendron is scheduled to appear in court monday. almost all of the 13 victims in the shooting attack were black including three people who survived. he still faces federal charges that could carry the death penalty. and "the miami herald" says

♪me high i'm the problem it's me ♪ today was supposed to be the day tickets for taylor swift's upcoming tour went on sale to the general public, but that will not be happening. earlier this week there was a meltdown of ticketmaster's website after more than three million people signed on for a presale. the glitches caused outrage among fans who were preapproved to buy tickets but could not. yesterday ticketmaster tweeted "due to extraordinarily high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand, tomorrow's public on-sale for taylor swift's the eras tour has been canceled. ticketmaster says more than two million tickets were sold on tuesday, and that's the most ever sold for an artist in a single day. meantime, starbucks workers at more than 100 stores went on strike. and this thanksgiving holiday could see a record number of shoppers.

dan lieberman has today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks closed lower thursday as the federal reserve slowlation is far from over.thi. nasdaq dropped 38 points. s&p 500 lost 12 points. mortgage rates dropped sharply last week averaging 6.61%, down from 7.08%, the largest weekly drop since 1981 giving would-be buyers new incentives. the plunge comes after a series of economic reports that indicate inflation may be finally easing. freddie mac changed its method for calculating rates, too, now collecting real time rates based on loan applications submitted to its automated underwriting system. starbucks workers at more than 100 stores in the u.s. went on strike thursday in their largest labor action since launching a campaign to unionize the company's stores last year. workers say they want better

pay, more consistent schedules, and higher staffing in busy stores. the starbucks workers united union says stores in 25 states plan to take part in the action, and strikers are handing out red cups with union logos. and this thanksgiving holiday weekend is expected to see a record number of shoppers despite worry about inflation. an estimated 166.3 million people are expected to shop from thanksgiving day through cyber monday this year. almost eight million more than last year. this is according to an annual survey from the national retail federation and prosper insights and analytics. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this friday morning. i'm dan lieberman, cbs news, new york. well, tyson foods is recalling 94,000 pounds of ground beef because it may be contaminated with hard mirror-like material. the products were produced on november 2nd at the tyson foods facility in amarillo, texas, and extends to four
