starting for a lot you. how busy it will be for those flying out of town. swifties listen up, it is taylor swift versus ticketmaster. what the singer is saying about fans on that site. theranos founder elizabeth holmes just sentenced to 11 years in prison. she had claims about her company's blood testing tech it nothing. she raised just shy of $1 billion. holmes claimed the technology had the ability to perform hundreds of tests with a few drops of blood. the problem is it didn't work. holmes faced about 20 years. her attorneys asked for 18 months due to her pregnancy. it's unclear when she's due to have the baby, but holmes has been ordered to report to prison april 7 of next year and the 38-year-old is expected to appeal the verdict. in the courtroom today, ramirez is tweeting about what he saw and will have

more on the sentencing and reaction ahead at 5:00. today, the feds wrapped up the criminal probes into former president donald trump with news a special counsel will take the lead in those investigations. skyler henry has more from the white house. >> reporter: u.s. attorney general merrick garland announced he is turning over the investigations into former president donald trump to a special counsel. >> appointing a special counsel at this time is the right thing to do. the extraordinary circumstances presented here demand it. >> reporter: jack smith who has been with the doj since 1994 will now oversee key aspects of a probe involving the january 6 insurrection and efforts to undo the 2020 presidential election as well as the investigation into the former president's handling of classified documents at mar-a-lago. >> as special counsel, he will prosecute independent

judgment. >> reporter: he says the pace of the investigations will not pause or flag under his watch. attorney general garland said former president trump's announcement this week that he would make another run at the white house and president biden saying he too will likely seek re-election prompted him to make a decision now to appoint a special council. >> such an appointment underscores the department's commitment to both independence and accountability in particularly sensitive matters. >> reporter: a trump spokesperson released a statement saying this is a political stunt by a weaponized biden department of justice. house republicans who will be in the majority next year say they will investigate political attacks on the former president. cbs news, the white house. a lot of bay area travelers are in for a busy weekend. holiday travel levels are approaching prepandemic levels and sfo, we know you expect about five million travelers to pass through your gates between

ttsetup. thewill ip the switch to light the embarcadero center one of the coolest downtown during the holidays. it should be a good time overall. hope to see you down here. weather is pretty much perfect for it. let's take a look at our current temperatures. those are running mostly in the 60s. it's 73 right now in santa rosa. 61 degrees downtown san francisco. it feels comfortable even thundershower we are in the shade at the embarcadero center. here is the hour-by-hour forecast as we head through the rest of the evening. temperatures are going to stay nearly steady the next hour or so. once the sun goes down, a little bit of a dip down into the 50s by the time they flip the switch coming up just after 7:00. we'll be here throughout the evening keeping an eye on the weather and keeping an eye on all the festivities. we'll have a check at the complete weekend forecast and thanksgiving in a few minutes. >> i'll be joining you at 5:00,

citing high demand and low inventory. >> i feel like i'm about to burst into tears. >> reporter: the singer weighed in writing in part it is excruciate to go watch mistakes with no recourse. we asked if they could handle this kind of demand and we were assured they could. during tuesday's presale, 15% of customers experienced a glitch on the site. ticketmaster says bot attacks and fans without invite codes to the presale drove unprecedented traffic to the site four times their previous peak. >> i never could have imagined how insane this whole process has been. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news that the justice department has opened an antitrust investigation into

meteorologist hanging out live at the embarcadero center. you are a busy man. i saw you tweeted that and got down here in time for your live shot in time. great. >> it helps that we're only about a half mile away from the station coming down here to the embarcadero center. we are at the building lighting ceremony and the carnival that goes with that. that opens up at the top of the hour at 5:00 4:00 across from the ferry building if you want to find us. there will be all sorts of stuff going on. first time in a few years there's been an event surrounding the embarcadero lighting. i want to bring in the president of bxb properties who is in charge of this particular event. it's nice to be out here in person for the first time in a few years. >> it is. it's been since 2019 they've we've got to gather the community and clients together and celebrate the beginning and start of the holiday season. >> reporter: a few changes this time around. there used to be a skate rink here. now we have more of a participatory area around here.

>> reporter: yeah, the ice rink is gone. it's more intimate here. we have a rcusci and will light the buildings with 17,000 bulbs and they will be l.e.d. very energy efficient. >> reporter: 17,000 bulbs. does this stay on the building all year long or do you have to -- >> no, they come down. temporary installation. they go up in october. they'll come down. we'll shut them off on january 2. >> reporter: i love it when it is lit up. it adds more light to the darkest time of year in terms of daylight. it is such a fun event. what time does the lighting occur? >> about 6:50 p.m. tonight. this starts at about 4:00. we'll roll it until about 7:00 p.m. and it should be a great night, great weather and great day out here. >> reporter: and somebody fairly famous flipping the switch for you. who is that? >> we have the mayor willy brown to flip the switch. >> reporter: that will be awesome. at 6:50 lights and take in all the stuff behind us

and the weather is perfect. >> absolutely. >> reporter: thank you for joining us. i'm going to talk weather and not just for today, but heading into the weekend as well. the last weekend before thanksgiving. a lot of folks have decorating on their minds. let's take a look at what you can expect as we go into this weekend. clear skies sticking around. we have abundant sunshine. it will be on the chilly side especially inland and breezy in the hills. mostly sunny, mild weekend in store for us. temperatures maybe not quite as warm as today, but still slightly above average. more clouds on the way next week. rain chances we were tracking over the last few eare. l be maindry as we heet's take a look athcurrent winds and they are gustiest at the highest elevations. we have a couple spots at lower elevations that are reporting 15 plus-mile-per-hour gusts in santa rosa and fairfield, but mainly it will be 2,000 feet where we will see stronger gusts in the 15 to 20-mile-per-hour range. those are going to gradually die down. still an offshore wind as we head through tonight which

means the fire danger isn't going to be zero, but that rain we picked up early last week helping us out as we wind through the day on saturday. winds will still be offshore. they will diminish further by saturday afternoon. in terms of the rain chances, well, we had to take that chance of rain out of the forecast entirely for tuesday, but starting with monday so we can take you all the way through thanksgiving weekend, we'll get through that was giving day and likely black friday. big shopping day without any chance of rain. our rain chances do go up as we look further down the line beyond the scope. there is a chance for the last day of the thanksgiving weekend on sunday. right now severe clear over roa degrees down here in san francisco. temperatures later tonight dropping to the mid- to upper 30s to around 40 degrees inland mostly in the low to mid-40s around the bay and high temperatures are going to warm up nicely into the mithe cooler

hitting the low 60s tomorrow afternoon for the very warmest spots getting close to 70 degrees. the 125th playing of the cal-stanford rivalry. 65 degrees at kickoff. lots of sunshine. it could not be better weather for the 125th reiteration of the big game. cloud cover by monday and tuesday of next week, looks like not only are we going to be sunny and dry for thanksgiving, but we will be warm with temperatures reaching into the mid-60s around the bay. farther inland it will be a mix of low 60s. after you eat if you are going to be one of the folks running one of the turkey trots around the bay area thursday morning, the weather looks great and the weather is great down here at the embarcadero center. we're on the plaza across the ferry building. the carnival gets started at the top of the hour at 4:00. >> it will be fantastic. thank you so much. coming up, she is going the distance to help others. we'll tell but this great lengths story. a california teenager swimming to fight hunger.

people. we need each other, right? in but are basic, edie is swimming 35 r.he says during the pandemic she realize add lot of people in our community were struggling, didn't have enough to eat and that need has only grown greater as we've learned with our food for bay area families campaign. last year we organized this swim-a-thon to raise money to fight hunger and so another event and is hoping her efforts will inspire other teenagers to figure out where they can give back where they live. it doesn't have to be just a pool where they live. >> i think it's great to focus on what you are good at and tweak it to apply it towards helping people. >> edie says she hopes to make this an annual event with other swimmers joining in. congratulations. we celebrate you. coming up, forget something? what was so important that the pilot was reaching out of an open window

all these days later, the race to be the next mayor of oakland still too close to call. a look behind the process and an update with the latest count. a southwest airlines passenger had a stroke of good luck thanks to the pilot. here is the story. the passenger left their cell phone at the gate in long beach before boarding, but thankfully, somebody spotted it and alerted a crew member. this is what happened next. they got it out at the tarmac. you see the pilot reaching out of the window to get the phone. he did it. got it back to the passenger even though boarding had finished. the door was closed and the plane had already pushed back. that is some extra service. now get me to grandma's house on time. that's it for kpix 5 at 3:00. cbs evening news is next. we'll be back with more local news at 5:00 and streaming 24/7 on cbs
