searching for a motive after a gunman opened fire in an lgbtq nightclub in colorado. five people were killed saturday night, another 25 were hurt. officials say the heroic actions of a few people inside who subdued the shooter saved lives. a makeshift memorial filled with fw flowers has been set up near the club. danya bacchus is in colorado springs with the latest on this. morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, anne-marie. in addition to that growing memorial, authorities continue to work through the night still searching for a motive. authorities say the horrific attack ended when at least two people grabbed a gun from the suspect, hit him with it, and pinned him down until police came. ♪ across the country, vigils were held to honor the victims of saturday night's horrific mass shooting at a colorado springs lgbtq club. >> i lost friends.

i'm not okay. >> reporter: joshua thurman was on the dance floor when the gunman opened fire at club q. to my left. i took off running to the dressing room. >> reporter: investigators identified the alleged shooter as 22-year-old anderson lee aldridge. they say at least two firearms were found at the scene and a long rifle was used in the attack. >> the motive of the crime is part of the investigation and whether this was a hate crime is part of that investigation. >> we don't have him anymore. ural sucks. >> reporter: the club q bartender was killed. friends say he made everyone feel like family. >> loving, supportive, with a heavy hand in his drink pouring. and just a really good listener. >> reporter: the attack considered to be at a haven for the ellgbtq community happened a day that honors transgender people who lost their lives to

violence. i'm sure we will continue to learn more about the victims today. president biden released a statement that said in part, "we cannot and must not tolerate hate." colorado's governor, who is gay, said that the flags will fly at half staff for five days to honor the victims. anne-marie? >> danya bacchus in colorado springs. thank you very much. so be sure to tune in to "cbs mornings" today. we're going to be speaking with colorado springs police chief adrian vasquez about the investigation and what we know about the accused shooter. meantime, we are learning more about the driver involved in a deadly holiday parade incident in north carolina. that killed a young girl on saturday. police say 20-year-old landon glass told them that he works on vehicle safety systems, and they say he was also assigned to driver improvement in the past. michael george has a look at the incident. get back -- >> reporter: a runaway truck turned a christmas mar aid in raleigh, north carolina, into a horrific scene. it started when this pickup

truck pulling a parade float lost control. first it slowly pushes through the crowd. some performers scatter. there's confusion. many don't realize what's happening. then the truck picks up speed and strikes a young girl, killing her. >> it was just a lot of chaos. cops running, people running. >> reporter: bystanders and police officers jumped in to action chasing after the truck and physically forcing it to a stop. >> people came up and were helping grab it and slow it down a little bit. >> reporter: witnesses say they thought it was an accident. the driver was honking to warn others that the truck was out of control. >> the driver, you could see the people in the truck getting out, telling people, warning people, get out of the way. we can't stop. we can't stop. they were screaming. >> reporter: police say the driver is cooperating and is now facing multiple charges including misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and reckless driving. michael george, cbs news. an investigation is under way to determine what caused a deadly bus crash near the campus of brandeis university in

massachusetts. officials say the bus carrying students was returning to the school from a hockey game at northeastern university when it hit a tree saturday night. one student was killed, 26 passengers and the bus driver were hurt. classes at brandeis are canceled today and tomorrow. and now to politics. president biden celebrated a milestone at the white house -- he became the first sitting president to turn 80 years old. he celebrated with some cake surrounded by his family. meanwhile, some are asking whether he's too old to serve a second term. natalie brand has more from the white house. >> reporter: facing questions about his age, president biden said he'll make a final decision on running for re-election early next year. >> i think he should. i think he's extremely capable. what he's been able to do in the last two years is an unprecedented level of accomplishment. >> reporter: on the other side, a field of potential rivals is already courting support. >> we've accomplished more over a four-year period than anybody

thought possible, but i can tell you this -- we've got a lot more to do, and i have only begun to fight. >> candidate quality matters. holy cow have we learned that the tough way. >> reporter: and trying to take the spotlight from former president donald trump whose platform just received a boost from elon musk, reinstating trump's twitter account saturday night after taking a social media poll. even as trump has said he now prefers his own social media platform. >> i don't know if that decision should be made by some poll. >> reporter: it's a reversal of trump's lifetime ban from twitter over concerns his tweets could incite more violence following the january 6th capitol attack. the congressional committee closer to finishing up its work. >> within a month, the public will have everything that we've found, all the evidence. >> that was natalie brand. today's scheduled hearing for the man accused of killing ten people in a racially motivated

shooting at a buffalo supermarket was adjourned because of the massive snowstorm that hit the area. 19-year-old payton gendron was expected to plead guilty to all new york state charges. almost all of the 13 victims in the shooting attack earlier this year were black, including three people who survived. a new date for the hearing has not been set. and residents are digging out from that historic storm that dumped more than six feet of snow on western parts of new york. many businesses remain closed, but highways reopened. some travel bans were lifted. governor kathy hochul canceled plans to visit hard-hit watertown yesterday after being told that it wasn't safe to travel there. since last thursday, orchard park, home of the buffalo bills, received the most snow, 80 inches. the bills moved yesterday's game to detroit. coming up, explosions near a nuclear power plant in ukraine. we're going to tell you about the damage. and harsh reality. tv stars todd and julie chrisley will learn their punishment for

♪are you ready♪ nasa's orion space capsule is set for a fly by of the balloon and critical rocket test firing today. the spacecraft's main engine is supposed to fire as it passes behind the moon. orion blasted off last week aboard "artemis 1" for a test aimed at getting astronauts back to the lunar surface in a few years. two reality tv stars will learn how much time they will spend in prison, and a nuclear power plant in ukraine sustained damage. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the bbc reports more than a dozen explosion the rocked the area around a russian occupied power plant in ukraine. both sides are blaming each other for the weekend shelling around the largest nuclear plant. the international atomic energy agency said that there was damage to some buildings systems and equipment, but nothing critical for safety and security. the head of the agency warned

"reuters" says that it at least one person is dead after a boat carrying cuban migrants capsized off the florida keys. the u.s. coast guard said it recovered the body of one person after the homemade vessel capsized. crews are searching for five people. nine people were rescued. survivors said 19 people were originally on the boat. the coast guard says that there were rough seas and 30 mile-per-hour winds. and the "associated press" says the sentencing hearing for reality tv stars todd and julie chrisley is set for today in atlanta. the couple was convicted this year on charges including bank fraud, tax evasion, and conspiring to defraud the irs. they're known for their show "chrisley knows best." he faces more than 20 years in prison, and she could be sentenced to more than 12 years. still to come, disney shcker. a former ceo announces his

stocks closed higher on friday as wall street looks ahead to black friday this week. the dow gained 199. nasdaq up 1. the s&p 500 took in 18. a disney shakeup as former ceo bob iger has returned as ceo. that means bob chappick was out, iger's handpicked replacement. iger left only 11 months ago. chappick has come under fire for various decisions as shares of disney have fallen about 41% so far this year. disney says iger will remain as ceo for two years to help the company get back on track. to its creditors, and ten owed at least $100 million. the exchange in one of the highest profile cryptoblowups. a hearing on fxt's so-called first day motions is set for tuesday before a u.s. bankruptcy judge. ye is back on twitter. the rapper formerly known as
