is banding together after a shooting rampage at a nightclub in colorado. i'm sara donchey, tonight the denver city building is all lit up in pride colors, and that's to honor the victims of the horrific colorado nightclub shooting. the violence has left the community shaken all across the country, three customers and two bartenders were killed saturday night when a gunman started shooting inside of club q. 17 others were shot. the club was known as a safe space for the community, and tonight, an army veteran is being called a hero for disarming the gunmen. richard fierro said he went into combat mode, tackling the shooter and hitting him repeatedly with his own gun. >> this whole thing was a lot. my daughter and wife should have never experienced combat. in colorado springs. everybody in that building experienced combat that night, not to their own accord but because they were forced to.

>> i'm not a hero. i'm a guy that wanted to protect his kids and his wife. >> a lot of people would say that man is a hero and tonight san francisco's lgbtq community got together a four bowling night, i know you were there, it looks like people showed up and this was top of mind for everybody. >> definitely, as the evening went on we saw more and more people come through those doors, it really was a lighthearted and family-friendly event, but many as you mentioned had thth trage weekend. >> reporter: longtime san francisco resident gonzales said she was feeling emotional on bowling night. she brought her partner and 9-year-old jj, to place she considered a safe space. >> which is why i think we are out tonight is to continue to reclaim and show our child that and trans people get to be out in the world and claim our space. and take the risk. i

feel like that's what we've always done and i'm going to try not to cry right now. >> the fundraiser followed the tragic weekend in colorado springs, and transgender day of remembrance. >> it's so sad. the first thing that went through my mind was orlando, and this flashback to what's been happening, and we work within the lgbtq industry, we make children's books, so, but hate that's been rolling around, we've experienced ourselves. >> reporter: my and her partner run reflection press which publishes gender inclusive children's books. >> having lived in castro and being for 28 years you are bound to have some kind of experience. this year has been the worst, we've gotten more online harassment than we've ever received. when we see this sort of thing happening in the clubs, again, in a way it makes me want to buckle down and be like, we need to teach our kids that we belong and this is our home and we can feel safe here.

>> reporter: donations for monday's event will benefit the nonprofit bay area american indian two spirits. the safety that the san francisco community offers is not lost on keith pence, whose family members spent time in colorado springs. >> i visited colorado springs once before, and i felt uneasy. it certainly a more conservative place, i came out when i was 18, i know that's not everyone's experience. >> reporter: gonzales says there's a lot to grieve in this moment but she knows the tragedy won't take down her community. >> there's the heartbreak inside, and there's the courage that keeps us going, and that's what the community is about. >> reporter: earlier we showed you video of the army veteran who tackled the colorado gunmen. it turns out he did get

help from a drag queen who started stomping the suspect with her high heels, and that night, the club also featured a drag divas show. >> it shouldn't have to come to that, the shooting was horrific but as soon as i saw that headline i knew that people were going to come to the castro and turn up, and say is enough is enough and that's what happened. you were there, right? >> there was a tremendous turnout in the castro last night, i met sister roma, there, she's a drag activist, she's worked and advocated for this community for more than 35 years, and she told me that this incident made her want to fight back in her own way. >> i do a lot of really big public events, i'm on the main stage at san francisco pride, and you have in the back of your mind, i wonder if anything crazy is going to happen. but we can't let the terrorists, that's what these people are, from being are authentic and true selves. i got up today and i did this to say, to these

people. >> she said when she got up, she thought, what can i do? i can stay in bed but in an act of courage she said i'm going to put on this fabulous drag and carry-on, and she ended up handing out thanksgiving meals to the homeless which was part of her plan for the day. >> interesting to see that the heartfelt reaction to all of this, thank you for telling us this story. the colorado shooting is now putting red flags back in the spotlight again tonight. a year and a half before saturday's nightclub shooting the suspect apparently threatened his own mother with a bomb. police had to evacuate the entire neighborhood until he surrendered. in spite of that, there is no record showing police or relatives tried to trigger colorado's red flag law. that would have allowed authorities to take away the suspects weapons and ammunition, since he was at that time considered to be a risk of harming himself or others. we spoke with u.s. have professor james taylor who says some of these legislatures are used by gun rights activists in the same way we use sanctuary city around immigration.

>> conservative judges in jurisdictions and sheriffs in many instances, they support giving people who might otherwise be subject to a red flag protection, so they give sanctuary to people that might be high risk. >> the violence in colorado is being treated as a hate crime, it was the deadliest attack on the lgbtq community since the 2016 pulse nightclub shooting in orlando. we know that the world cup is going on right now, and qatar is coming under scrutiny first strict anti-gay laws. threatening to penalize teams that wear these one love armbands to promote inclusion. ahead of the u.s. wales game, a popular journalist, grant wall, said he was barred from entering the stadium in qatar for wearing a shirt with a rainbow pattern. he was detained for half an hour and then was let go. we will have more on the world cup later on

measurable rainfall, and the most likely scenario at this point looks like between a 10th of an inch on the low-end to half an inch on the high-end, not a heavy rainfall event but a good soaking rainfall which we definitely need, after that three-week stretch of dry weather, and it would mark the beginning of an unsettled pattern that should carry us through the end of november and into early december. right now temperatures cooling off, 39 degrees in livermore, most temperatures in the 40s, holding onto 52 degrees in san francisco, it will be chilly tomorrow morning for inland parts of the bay area with lows in the upper 30s to around 40 degrees, low to mid 40s around the bay and along the coast. temperatures will warm up to a few degrees above average and most spots tomorrow afternoon, most of us topping out in the 60s, temperatures around 60 degrees along the coast, mid to upper 60s down the peninsula in the south end of the bay, mostly upper 60s in the santa clara valley, some of the warm spots near 70, inland in the east bay, mid to upper 60s, warm spots approaching 70, falling just short. low 60s in san francisco with mid 60s for
