we begin tonight with breaking news. another tragedy at the hands of gun violence. multiple people are dead and others wounded after a mass shooting inside a virginia wal-mart just after 10:00

tonight east coast time, 7:00 our time. now once inside the wal-mart, officers found multiple people shot and killed. police believe it was a single shooter who has also been killed. right now multiple law enforcement agencies are assisting as officers continue to search the store for more victims. we'll certainly keep you updated throughout the night. hello, i'm juliette goodrich in for sara donchey. safety is on everyone's mind as the holiday shopping season is on full swing. with more people out and about, there is a call arwide. london breed was out promising a safe holiday shopping season for both locals and visitors. if you recall last year, union square gained national attention for scenes like this. crowds of shoplifters rushing several high-end stores and taking off with everything they could carry. since then there has been a strong police presence with a mobile command center and seemingly constant patrols in the area. but that's not all they're doing to make sure the

shopping season goes smoothly. betty yu joins us with a hook at how the city is beefing up security, so everyone could feel safe. betty, you were able to see it firsthand? >> reporter: that's right. tonight, i felt very safe reporting in union square with the various layers of security on virtually every corner. some shoppers were surprised to see this area flooded with police officers and private security. others felt comforted by it. >> reporter: salazar and his friend are in the holiday spirit and ready for thanksgiving dinner. he's visiting san francisco from mexico city. >> i love the feeling of christmas right now. >> reporter: salazar has been staying in the city for a month. in union square, it was hard to miss the heavy police presence on virtually every corner. private security guards also made rounds. we spotted an ambassador whose purpose is to add another layer of security and make tourist years more

inviting. >> they're doing their best efforts to make people feel welcome to the city. and they are trying to give you as much information as possible about the culture. >> reporter: the other popular destinations, more security. katherine stephanie said extra police will be deployed around the park and chestnut street seven days a week. the supervisor securitied $300,000 to pay for ambassadors. >> do you feel safe here? >> i feel safe. i didn't know about robberies in the stores. but the one thing is i would never have a car here in san francisco for sure. i would be afraid someone would break into my car and destroy the window. >> is that because you have seen a lot of glass? >> yeah. >> reporter: this group of shoppers said they definitely noticed the increase in police

officers. >> i feel a lot safer. >> reporter: i was like are you doing tours or something? and i'm not used to people saying hi like that. you're not used to people being openly friendly like that. >> reporter: planning to end the night with ice skating. the two met in san francisco. >> i love the fact that we can skate here. it's a good feeling of celebration. the city is deploying increased police officers and ambassadors in other high traffic areas in the city. >> and you do see that. what did you see different this year? does there look like there is more to your story? >> reporter: the amount seemed to be about the same. i noticed

a big difference is the ambassadors in the orange jackets and also there were more private security guards walking around the tree for example. >> it's nice to see. betty, thank you. and in addition to the increased police, mayor breed is also pushing to keep the streets in surrounding areas clean and wants to rezone some areas to attract new businesses. all in an effort to revitalize the city's key shopping district. >> you can have a great retail establishment on the first floor. an amazing restaurant on the second floor. an office space on the third floor. in the past, many of our restrictions around what can happen has made it difficult to do that. >> all right, as we do head into the holidays under the threat of covid, flu, rsv, bay area children's hospital are preparing for a potential surge in kids. they're making contingency plans in case they

run out of space in their e.r.s. >> reporter: hospitals turning to tents with emergency beds in case they run out of space indoors. chopper 5 was over benioff children's hospital in san francisco. the mission campus has 17 emergency room beds. the hospital's chief nursing officer says those beds will hold kids who are less ill. she told us most of the children they're seeing are under the age of 15 months old though it is especially dangerous for seniors. >> remember the weather is colder, so we're not outside, we are more inside where we are closed in and there isn't that good circulation. >> reporter: recommending everyone try to limit the number of people you're around, and mask up while indoors. the oakland campus has more than twice as many pediatric beds as

san francisco's. and they have opened an annex if they need to treat more children. possibly linked to rsv. the child was under the age of four and died at hospital. meanwhile officials are ramping up efforts to get more boosted to prevent another surge. >> the best way to save lives this holiday season is to ensure all americans, particularly seniors, get their updated covid vaccine and their flu vaccine. all right, get ready for the holidays. let's get to our first alert weather and paul heggen with our travel forecast. why would anyone want to leave the bay area? >> exactly, it will be perfect here. if you're flying out of town, families, i guess. >> i guess. >> take a look at the travel forecast for some of the major hubs that are connecting out of the various bay area airports. things are looking pretty good.

and the troubled spots, minor inconvenient spots. denver might be on the windy side. some early showers in dallas. but that will take a break for much of the day before the rain will become steady around dallas, fort worth. as you're trying to get out of town if you will be sticking close to home around the bay area, the weather looks great. temperatures will start off cool, but not chilly, then warm up rapidly. the high temperatures in the mid-60s along the coast. the upper 60s in the bay with the low to mid-70s. we will cool off rapidly once that sun goes down. if you will be heading up to tahoe, good for you. and those temperatures will be above freezing. but the fact they would back off quickly, it does mean we shouldn't see too much melting there. a lot of sunshine on friday. i'll come back with the rest of the holiday weekend forecast in a few minutes. mos.hesugar bowl m e y area wh

promise of rank choice. >> reporter: while taylor says he won't push for a recount personally, he says he is aware some of his supporters are looking into funding one. alameda county will certify the results on december 8. san jose's current and future mayor's serving up thanksgiving meals to families who used to live on the streets. dishing out turkey, mashed potatoes, and other fixings at the quick build community. almost, famous bay area rapper was also giving back to the community. he held his 18th annual turkey giveaway in oakland. people stopped by to drop off turkeys and other ingredients to make holiday meals. >> we are always in the

we will continue to monitor the mass shooting as we told you at the top of the show. police still on the scene after a single gunman walked into a wal-mart just after 10:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m. our time and opened fire killing multiple people and injuring others. no word yet on the number of victims, but police say the gunman is dead. this marks the second major mass shooting in the u.s.

a live look now and it looks pretty calm. passengers are inside and everyone is trying to get to their destination at the same time. with the tsa reporting 4.6 million passengers going through their check points today alone, it's a 7% increase from last year. and while it was busy in the sky, aaa expects it to be worse than tomorrow. they will drive at least 50 miles to get to their destinations about 98% of what we saw before the pandemic. >> you want to leave at a reasonable time where traffic should be better. it won't be

light or great, but better. >> and you know, we should be aware that traffic will be heavier this time of the year. we need to slow down and buckle up to get to our destination. and at least no slick roadways. are you show up to the party on time or a little late? >> on time. >> what about the airport? >> i want to try to get through security with a beverage. some kind of relaxing thing. that's not a word. okay. >> if you have a beverage, it might be. >> and wherever you're going, the weather looks cooperative, whether it's around the bay area or in california. across the country it will be calm. temperatures were still mild and the warming trend will continue with high pressure taking oh in the upper levels of the atmosphere. it means more atmosphere and more air piled on top of us. and it warms it up. so the temperatures will be several degrees above average tomorrow

and even warmer than that on thursday for thanksgiving. we will see mostly sunny skies throughout the day tomorrow. maybe a little fog to start the day and along the coast, but it won't last long. we'll add in an offshore wind tomorrow, which will help boost those temperatures for thanksgiving. then it's back to some passing clouds for thanksgiving night into friday. but the clouds will not be substantial night. and just a little bit of filtering effect to the sunshine for black friday. the next chance for rain isn't that far away. there is a chance it might move in on monday for the best chance for showers with another chance potentially following it up on tuesday night into wednesday. that'll be nice to see. but focusing just on the rain that will fall monday. the weather prediction center, which is a branch of the national oceanic atmospheric administration. calling for a quarter inch of total rainfall. certainly not a

drought buster. by that point, we would have been dry for three weeks. we will take whatever we could get. dry out there this evening. temperatures cooling off, but not too bad just yet. but the warm side, downtown san francisco at 52 degrees in the moment. the mid to upper 30s and the lower 40s inland. mostly mid-40s in the bay and along the coast. fairly close for late november. then temperatures are going to warm up into the low 60s along the coast in the cool spots. mid to upper 60s around the bay. the temperatures are at least into the upper 60s inland. most are reaching or exceeding 70 degrees. again, we're going to be a degree or two warmer than that as we head through thanksgiving day. so things are looking good for the holiday and the weekend. a gradual increase in cloud cover for sunday. the temperatures are gradually going to cool off as we head through the weekend down to about what's normal for this time of the year by saturday and sunday. then that chance for showers will arrive for monday and monday night. maybe a few lingering showers on tuesday. but the next wave

of moisture will hold off until wednesday of next week. it will be nice to end the month of november with at least one more rain chance. >> so true. thank you. well no ice skating, no problem. that's why they invented roller skates. when we come back, we will head to the roller rink opening in time for the holidays.
