friday. for more, download the cbs news app on your cell phone or connected tv. it's wednesday, november 23rd, 2022. this is the "cbs morning news." breaking overnight -- walmart mass shooting. on the eve of thanksgiving, multiple people are dead after a shooter opened fire inside a virginia walmart. what we know right now. student loan relief. president biden extends the hold on federal student loan payments. how long he's putting them off. and hitting the road. today is one of the busiest travel days of the year. we have what you need to know before you head out. and good morning, and thank you for joining us. i'm matt pieper in for anne-marie green. we begin this morning with that breaking news of yet another mass shooting in this country. this one at a walmart in virginia.

police in chesapeake responded to a report of a shooting last night around 10:15 at the store. officers found multiple dead and injured victims inside the store when they arrived. police have not yet provided an exact number of people killed but say it's likely less than ten. they say they believe the shooting had already stopped by the time they arrived. >> we were able to put rescue and tactical teams together to go inside to provide lifesaving measures rapidly and quickly. and then through the course of the investigation we believe it was a single shooter, and we believe that shooter is deceased at this time. >> police are not saying whether the shooter took their own life or what sparked the violence. we're expecting further updates later this morning. and we are learning more about the suspect accused of killing five people at an lgbtq nightclub in colorado. the alleged shooter is out of the hospital and is expected in court today for the first time. the suspect faces multiple preliminary counts of first-degree murder and committing a bias motivated

crime. it comes as some survivors are talking about what happened saturday night at club q in colorado springs. bradley blackburn is in new york with the latest. bradley? >> reporter: matt, among those survivors now speaking out one of the patrons who helped take down the shooter. officials say that the exact motive is still under investigation, but court filings are telling us more about the suspect who could face life in prison if convicted on those murder charges. today the suspect in the colorado springs club q shooting is expected to appear in court by video for the first time. court filings from 22-year-old anderson lee aldrich's public defenders say aldrich is nonbinary and goes by the pronouns they and them. >> i'm waiting to wake up from a bad dream. >> reporter: barrett hudson was shot multiple times before escaping the nightclub. three bullets are still inside of him. >> this is something that's going to stay with me forever in life. the bullets will be right there with it, and i'll never forget. >> i will be uncomfortable going anywhere for a long time.

>> reporter: shooting survivor anthony says he doesn't feel comfortable around strangers after the shooting that night. >> i pretty much heard it first along with everybody up by the door. they just hid. >> reporter: mourners returned to the memorial set up outside of the colorado springs nightclub which now bears an altar with pictures of the five victims who were killed. one of them, raymond green vance, was a family friend of richard fierro, one of two patrons celebrated ads heroes after they subdued the suspect. >> pulled him down, pinned him against the side. i started whaling on this dude. >> reporter: the president biden called the army veteran and his wife to offer condolences and thank him for his bravery. aldrich was arrested last year for an alleged bomb threat but not prosecuted. some are wondering why police didn't use the red flag laws to look for and seize weapons that

he may have had toe time. y -- had at the time. a lot of questions in the case. >> absolutely. thank you. >> reporter: you bet. to north carolina now where two people are dead after a news helicopter crashed along a busy interstate leaving our cbs affiliate there to report on the loss of their own colleagues. mark strassmann has the story. >> reporter: this noontime disaster fell from the sky. a news helicopter crashed right along i-77 in charlotte. it belonged to wbtv, the cbs affiliate there. why it crashed remains unclear, but both people aboard were killed including wbtv meteorologist jason myers. >> rain from the south -- >> reporter: the father of four fell in love with weather during a third grade science project. also killed, chip theyag, sky 3's pilot the last five years, and a hero in his final minute of flight.

>> he apparently knew he was in trouble and circled looking for a place to put that down. i don't think he had any choice. it was going down, and he -- he got it just off the highway and avoided it. >> reporter: charlotte's police chief agrees -- >> if that is truly the case, then that pilot is a hero in my eyes. >> reporter: lifesaving but heartbreaking for wbtv. >> this is a family here at wbtv. and we are devastated, we're devastated for their families. >> reporter: a veteran member of the newsroom told me the two men went flying to give myers some special training in the helicopter. both men died doing what they loved. mark strassmann, cbs news, atlanta. the suspect in a deadly crash at a massachusetts apple store says it was an accident. 53-year-old bradley rein pleaded not guilty yesterday to reckless homicide by a motor vehicle. authorities say he drove his suv through the front window of the store outside boston on monday. one man inside that store was killed, and 19 others hurt.

rein told police he was looking for an eyeglass store when his right foot became stuck on the accelerator. president biden is extending a pause on federal student loan payments as legal challenges to his plan to cancel some of the debt are decided in court. the moratorium which was set to expire january 1st will now be extended by 60 days after a lawsuit is resolved. if it's not resolved by june 30th, payments would resume 60 days after that. the education department stopped processing applications this month after a federal judge struck down the plan. and the supreme court cleared the way for former president donald trump's tax returns to be turned over to a congressional committee. the court rejected trump's plea that would have prevented the treasury department from handing over six years of returns to the house ways and means committee. democrats are in charge of the committee for just another six weeks until republicans take control of the house in january. jury deliberations are under way in the january 6th capitol

riot trial of members of the right-wing extremist group the oath keepers. the group's leader, stewart rhodes, and four other members face the rare charge of they're accused of a violent plot to stop the transfer of power after the 2020 presidential election. rhodes claims there was no plan for the oath keepers to attack the capitol. the charge carries up to 20 years in prison. jurors have gone home for the thanksgiving weekend. today is going to be one of the busiest travel days of the year as people head out for the thanksgiving holiday. aaa says nearly 55 million americans will travel 50 miles or more to their destination this year. the vast majority are going by car. today from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. is considered the worst time to hit the roads, so you may want to head out early to beat the rush. yesterday was expected to be the busiest day at our airports. kris van cleave has more. >> reporter: the soto family arrived bright and early at chicago o'hare for their flight

to phoenix. were you worried coming in that it was going to be a mad house? >> we were. we were. hence why we got the early flights with the child. but surprisingly, it was pretty quick. >> reporter: by 7:00 a.m., united airlines customer service agent edwin gonzalez had logged five miles moving through the terminal. >> i don't stop. >> reporter: the surge in flyers is a big test for the airlines after staffing struggles this summer contributed to nearly 45,000 cancelations and more than 400,000 delays. >> i'm watching very closely, and i think what we're seeing is a system that's definitely improved but still not as resilient as it needs to be. still vulnerable to a disruption cascading through the system. >> reporter: with united flying half a million people each day, any disruption could have ripple effects. >> the thanksgiving holiday period defines the strength of an airline throughout the year. united's hired 15,000 new employees. we've been practicing and

"the oklahoman" says four people found dead at a marijuana farm were all executed. authorities say they received reports of a hostage situation at a shooting at the site about 55 miles northwest of oklahoma city on sunday. when deputies arrived, they found three men and a woman dead. they were all chinese citizens. another person was wounded. police say the suspect who was arrested in south florida yesterday knew the victims. cbs new york reports a suspect is under arrest after a brick was thrown at a new york city lgbtq bar. 34-year-old sean kuilan faces criminal mischief, weapons, and reckless endangerment charges in connection with the incident. police are also investigating two prior cases of bricks and rocks being thrown at the building in the last week. sources say the suspect confessed to three incidents and told police it was revenge against an employee of that bar. and the "baltimore sun" says three people were critically injured when a house exploded. a woman and a teenage girl were

quarter since the sub prime mortgage crisis. home prices are still higher compared to a year ago, but annual gains are shrinking. electric car company tesla has issued back-to-back recalls revealing it's recalling some 321,000 vehicles due to a safety issue. in a filing over the weekend with the national transportation safety board it said some sedans and model y suvs had an issue that caused tail lamps to intermittently illuminate. this comes after last week's recall of 30,000 model x cars in the u.s. over a front passenger airbag issue that can be corrected with a software update. more job cuts are coming to the tech industry. computer maker hp said it plans to cut nearly 10% of its work force. 4,000 to 6,000 people over the next three years. facebook parent meta, microsoft, and salesforce are among those that have made similar moves,
