and of course the festivities kick off this morning with the 96th annual new york's thanksgiving day parade. you can see some of the world-famous giant balloons as they were inflated. there are four new balloons this year including bluey, the dog from the hit cartoon. the parade starts at west 77th street and central park west and heads south until it reaches the famous macy's store in harold square. bradley blackburn is at the start of the parade route with a preview. good morning, and of course happy thanksgiving. >> reporter: matt, happy thanksgiving. you know, i brought my 2 1/2-year-old daughter to see the balloons yesterday, and i have to tell you, bluey was a big hit. i think a lot of kids are going to be looking for that. for so many families the holidays don't really start until tom turkey kicks off the macy's thanksgiving day parade. it brings a little magic here to the streets of new york city, but all across the country. and after a couple of years with covid setbacks, they promised

this year's parade and bigger and better than ever. new york city's thanksgiving day parade is as iconic as turkey dinner. >> everybody has grown up with the thanksgiving parade, right? i mean, even if it's on our tvs, it's part of thanksgiving. >> reporter: thousands watched workers inflate the giant balloons that make this parade so unique. >> my favorite thing was the soccer one. >> my favorite one was actually -- i like the books, and i like his humor. >> reporter: for some, seeing the parade up close is a bucket list item. >> we didn't realize how big they are. now we see why they're all tied down. >> reporter: the massive parade features 8,000 participants, 16 character balloons, 28 floats, 1,200 cheerleaders, 700 clowns, a dozen marching bands, and of course santa claus. about three million people are expected to line the parade route. while there are no credible or specific threats, the nypd is

taking precautions to keep everybody safe. >> heavy weapons teams, our warm squad, radiological and chemical centers, counter surveillance teams, drone detection and mitigation and additional cameras installed along the parade route. >> reporter: there will also be explosive-detecting k-9s with a huge contingent of police officers. >> there will be officers that you see and officers that you will not see. we are here in the air. we are here in the crowds. we're here along the route to keep you safe. >> reporter: the weather forecast is perfect, sunny, in the mid 50s, with no wind to cause trouble for the balloons. and from start to finish, the parade runs about three hours. that is easy to believe when you see all these floats and balloons. they say it is so big this year they have to start about 15 minutes earlier than usual. santa has to cross that finish line in time for thanksgiving dinner.

>> of course he does. no wind, great weather, early, it's all good. bradley blackburn in new york. thank you. millions of americans will be hitting the road today to spend the holiday with their loved ones. if you're driving to your destinations, aaa says the busiest times to travel today will be between 11:00 and 3:00 this afternoon, and the busiest areas will be new york, los angeles, chicago, and atlanta. the good news is gas prices right now are about 20 cents lower than they were a month ago. while turkey is the biggest thanksgiving tradition, football is a close second. all the usual cast of characters will suit up for the three games on tap today. the detroit lions host the buffalo bills. the new york giants and dallas cowboys face off. the nightcap is the patriots and minnesota vikings. be sure to watch "cbs mornings" today. super bowl-winning quarterback and host of cbs sports nfl on cbs, phil simms, will join us to break down all of today's games. to the deadly mass shooting

at a walmart in virginia. sre m pulled out a handgun and began firing inside an employee break room tuesday night. the gunman's been identified as 31-year-old andre bing. authorities say he died for what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. police have identified the dead including a 16-year-old boy whose name is being withheld because of his age. we get more from jeff pegues. it's unknown where the suspect is. >> reporter: the first 911 call came in at 10:12. >> there is serious bleeding. >> reporter: police say the first officers on scene entered the store four minutes later. the alleged gunman, 31-year-old walmart employee andre bing, was armed with a pistol. investigators say he had additional rounds of ammunition. >> over the course of the next 30, 45 minutes we were able to find multiple fatalities and multiple injured parties. >> reporter: investigators say that bing died of a

self-inflicted gunshot wound but not before shooting and injuring seven people and killing six. bing and victims were found in the walmart break room. >> it is by the grace of god that a bullet missed me. not going to lie. i looked at him, i saw the smoke leaving the gun, and i literally watched bodies drop. >> reporter: sarah stone walker is among the injured. a mother of three, she was shot five times. 24-year-old jaylen jones was also injured. among the dead, 39-year-old brian pendleton who was described as having a big hart. 22-year-old tyneka johnson who family say was working to get her first car and apartment. her aunt agonizes over the fact that she didn't anticipate. >> they don't teach you what to do if it's your manager. you know, she didn't see that coming.

she didn't see a threat from him. >> reporter: the investigation will stretch through the thanksgiving holiday. authorities are still working to determine a motive. today chesapeake city manager encouraged residents of the latest home of a mass shooting to stay strong. thvery dficult days today and in the days ahead, but we will get through this. >> that was jeff pegues reporting. the suspect accused of killing five people at a colorado springs lgbtq nightclub was ordered held without bail after making an initial court appearance. 22-year-old anderson lee aldrich sat slumped over in a chair yesterday on a video feed with visible wounds and struggled to speak. aldrich was beaten and subdued by people inside the club during saturday's shooting. the suspect who identifies as nonbinary faces possible first-degree murder and hate crimes charges. there is no word on a motive for that attack. cbs news has learned the department of justice has reached out to former vice

president mike pence as part of its investigation into events surrounding the january 6th capitol attack. sources familiar with the matter say pence is reviewing the request. investigators want to talk with him about alleged efforts by former president trump to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. pence has said he won't talk to the house committee investigating the riot. georgia's abortion ban after roughly six weeks of pregnancy is back on after the state supreme court reinstated it. the justices put a lower court ruling overturning the ban on hold while they consider an appeal. it took effect in july after the u.s. supreme court overturned roe versus wade. doctors who had resumed providing abortions after six weeks had to immediately sto after yesterday's state supreme court ruling. overseas now. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy is urging the u.n. security council to act after russia again attacked the country's energy infrastructure. more than 70 russian cruise missiles bombarded the energy

shook homes a block away. measles may soon be a global threat, and michigan state football players are hit with charges. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "detroit free press" reports charges were filed against seven michigan state football players for their actions in a post-game fight. video showed the players hitting and kicking two university of michigan players in a michigan stadium tunnel last month. it followed michigan's 29-7 victory. one player was charged with felonious assault which carries a maximum of four-year sentence. the others were charged with misdemeanors. "reuters" reports muse else -- measles is now an imminent global threat due to the pandemic. according to the world health organization and the cdc. health officecord high of nearly 40 million children missed a measles vaccine due to hurdles from covid and immunization delays. in the u.s. there's been a recent outbreak of measles in ohio where 24 children have contracted the virus. they were all unvaccinated. and the bbc says hundreds of

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ well, a treasure hunter in florida hit the jackpot when he found a diamond ring worth $40,000 on the beach. joseph cook did not cash it in. instead, he went looking for the owner. after posting his find on line, a man claimed the ring was his wife's. he had a receipt with numbers that identified the stone and soon after he had that ring back. cook says he believes in good karma. search crews have found the body of a hiker who went missing in new hampshire. emily sotelo was last seen sunday morning. tracks and personal belongings led crews to her body yesterday on what would have been her 20th birthday. the cause of death has not been released.

a columnist has filed a second lawsuit against former president donald trump after a new law went into effect at pars as soon as the adult survivors act temporarily lifted new york state's deadlines for suing over sexual assault. she's already suing trump for defamation claiming he raped her in a department store dressing room in the '90s. trump denied the claim. israeli police say two americans were among those injured in yesterday's deadly twin bombings in jerusalem. officials say one person was killed and more than a dozen others injured in two explosions near bus stops. police are calling it a terror attack. no one has claimed responsibility. prime minister justin trudeau said the person who died was a canadian citizen. coming up on "cbs mornings," cbs sports' phil simms has a preview of nfl thanksgiving day football.
