nothing brings the pack together like a trip to great wolf lodge. now open in northern california. good evening, and happy thanksgiving, i'm sara donchey. some people say the minute you finish your thanksgiving dinner is when the holiday shopping season starts. that used to mean people staying up all night waiting in long lines. we covered our fair share of

physical fights inside of stores. well, a few years ago, there were people pitching tents outside of best buy for black friday. that really wasn't all too uncommon back in the day but it's a lot different now. a lot of stores are not even open tonight. the big box stores were all ghost towns. the store did set up barricades for tomorrow. betty yu is here with us. a lot of stores are offering black friday deals. is black friday as we knew it no longer? >> reporter: it depends on how you define black friday. so, it seems like it is hard to know when black friday starts and when it ends because there's discounts in sales happening. for some it is black friday week or month. nishette said she didn't wait until black friday to score some air pods on sale last month. >> when did you get the first

black friday email? >> i got it earlier this month. they said black friday whole month. end of the year. amazon said that returns are until february, 2023. >> so you don't wait until black friday hits? >> not anymore. but, i like the thrill. >> reporter: the thrill used to look like this. camping out and waiting in long black friday lines outside stores like best buy, target, and macy's. >> we were just getting right here at union square and trying to get into macy's but i don't see any hustle in there. so we were debating let's wait until midnight. >> reporter: this year there is no midnight rush. in recent years, macy's and other popular stores chose to close their doors on a major shopping day. the best buy did have barricades set up thursday, but like many retailers, it will get a late start on friday. at

5:00 or 6:00 a.m. >> everyone will be in line. and we are going to shop. we used to have lists of things we wanted to buy. >> reporter: this bay area couple won't be waiting in any long lines this year, but this san francisco resident is betting big on an in-person black friday experience. >> i'm going to go up to sacramento. and, try to purchase me a convertible tomorrow. >> and you are doing it on black friday because you expect to get a good deal? >> that's right. >> reporter: she is open to spontaneous shopping. >> maybe a laptop. clothes for family. sign up for a credit card and you goat 30% off. well holiday sales are expected to hit $942 billion this year. that's up 6% from last year. >> okay, so, the one of the

things we bond over is our love for shopping. >> that's right. >> might be a little dysfunctional. but i have to ask, did you find any good black friday deals for yourself? >> so i found black friday deals on the day before thanksgiving so i took advantage of that. i bought several pairs of shoes. but, today was too busy to take advantage of some deals. but maybe after work. >> there are some hours left in the evening. >> there's still time. >> thank you so much. so, as betty mentioned, this doesn't mean that people aren't shopping at all. it is still supposed to be a record breaking weekend. 166million people expected to shop from thanksgiving day through cyber monday. that is almost 8 million more than last year. it sounds like betty was one of them. if you plan on getting up early to shop storm, best buy and old navy will open their doors before sunrise at 5:00 a.m. other stores are keeping their normal hours. a lot of people have been trying to get their hand on the new iphone. it has been sold out or back ordered a lot of places and

now, more than 20,000 workers have left china's largest iphone factory after violent protests broke out. this was the scene at the fox con plant. hundreds of workers clashed with authorities in hazmat suits. all of this is because of salary issues with covid. now, they are apologizing to staff. at the same time, workers are calling for better working conditions here and in 30 countries. first alert weather now. it was so sunny. a lot of people spent the day out at the beach on thanksgiving. cal fire crews made air drops on a brush fire that burned in sonoma county today. seven acre fire

broke out north of cloverdale near pine mountain road. strong winds blew embers from a previous pile burn. they contained the fire after about a few hours. now they were hard at work, but didn't miss their thanksgiving dinner. the food came to them. thank you to them and all first spends working on this day. an essential workers. one of the things i thought when i heard about this is we don't hear about too many of these. >> we have had a lot of rain, but they were doing a control burn there. and it was really windy. >> not a good time. >> not the best time. let me show you what's going on in the mountains. if you live in the north bay, you know it was windy. you woke up and you could tell, you could see it and feel it. 36 mile-an-hour gusts this morning going over mount saint helena and the north bay mountains. watch what happens. we had this kind of

minor fire weather scenario. this was the kind of service dinner nay owe where that could get out of control. on shore wind, it will help with the humidity. it has been really dry out there. but when that on shore turns on tomorrow, look at the improvement that will make. we will increase humidities and turn on the wind in the mountains and change the way this impacts the temperatures. we were way above average today. that offshore flow did really allow the temperatures to be quite warm today. it was 10 degrees warmer than average in santa rosa and san jose. we are not going to be that warm by the time we get to the middle of next week. we will bring the daytime highs down. cold mornings ahead of us for tomorrow in the north bay valleys and we need to talk

about the next chance of rain if it exists anymore. that is coming up in a bit. the tsa screened 2.4 million travelers at airports across the country yesterday. that is just shy of a post pandemic record hit on july 4th weekend this year. here in the bay area, over 50,000 passengers flew out of sfo just still ahead, we took to the street to ask a very simple question. what are you thankful for? >> our first grandchild. we don't know if it is a boy or a girl. >> we have a special update tonight on this couple we introduced you to today.

haseen a tough year for a lot of people. flu season has been rough. plus, tech layoffs and the strain of inflation. right now, more bay area residents are relying on food benefits than ever before. state data shows 600,000 people in eight bay area counties were enrolled in cal fresh benefits in september. that is almost a 50% jump from september, 2019. so getting a helping hand for thanksgiving dinner was probably more important than ever this year. both glide memorial and the tenderloin saint anthony foundation hosted a thanksgiving lunch. hundreds of peop ed up. >> the price of food is going up. the price of living is going up. just to make ends meet. and, bridge that gap, a lot of people are coming to us for that extra bit of help. >> a lot of us have a lot to be

thankful for this thanksgiving holiday. kpix5's da lin went out in the city today to see what people are happy for. >> reporter: across the region, family and friends gathering around dinner tables. some for the first time, post pandemic. the hope is the time we spent away from each other gives us greater appreciation for the time we have together. because for the last two-and-a-half years, we are reminded the best gift is the gift of time. on this thanksgiving day, i'm setting up shop along the san francisco embarcadero waterfront. asking people what are you thankful for? >> we have something really special to be thankful for. our daughter is right this minute at the hospital having a baby. >> our first grandchild. we don't know if it is a boy or a girl. nobody does except the medical authorities at the hospital. but, we are thankful either way. >> overcame homelessness for a

view looked like when the sun was setting you can really see it. the haze out there. this is the classic winter inversion. a lot of this is from wood burning fireplaces or stoves. as a result, bay area air quality management district is actually put out a spare the air day for tomorrow. if you look at the current air quality on here, some of these sensors are going into the unhealthy for sensitive groups. if you look at the forecast, most likely north bay and south bay valleys will go into unhealthy for sensitive groups. not the best air quality. other than that, the weather is great. there is the next little system. a little bit of rain off the far northwest coast trying to get into northern most california. we are not going to get the rain from that. if we follow that line, even though the rain falls apart, you can still see the

cold front. as we get toward the late afternoon and evening, this going into late saturday. there is a weak cold front coming through. that is important because it will help break up some of that haze. clear out the air quality a little bit. cold front is going to cool us down a little bit. and that really does start to show up by the time we get toward the middle of next week. there will be a few more like that. weak little cold front. doesn't look like any of them bring us rain. but, they are all going to make it noticeably cooler. by the time we get to the middle of next week. we can look at the futurecast and see most of these systems just fall apart in terms of any rain. if we wanted to really kind of take this to the end and play it out, we could look all the way ahead toward next thursday. and the model says maybe you will get some rain then. and we have done that enough times this winter so far. then it falls apart. we are not going to play that game too heavily tonight. just so you know.

there is light snow possible. monday. not a lot from that. but if you have any travel plan ins the sierra, most of sunday should be fine. but monday, you might get a light dusting of snow. temperatures out there now showed you how cold the lows will get. it will be in the upper 30s for the coldest inland valleys but mid to upper 40s for most of us. daytime highs almost as warm as today. tomorrow we might do a few 70s . a lot of mid to upper 60s . the seven day forecast, look at the cool down, san jose, 73 tomorrow. upper 50s over here. series of cold fronts, they add up. and it will be much cooler for daytime highs by materially middle part of next week and morning lows plan on colder mornings as well. charlie, over to you. sports is coming up after the break. thanksgiving day triple header in the nfl. and, not just any old triple header. trio of good ones. thanksgiving in detroit doesn't start until

elon musk plans to reinstate all banned twitter accounts including those batted for harassment and misinformation. musk pulled twitter users asking them whether the company should offer a general amnesty to suspended accounts as long as they have not broken the law and participated in spam. 72% said yes. musk tweeted the people have spoken. and a new report from the european union says twitter took longer to review hater content this year compared to 2021 and the company removed less of it. just over half of reported illegal hate speech was taken down this year. a drop from 82% last year. but, we should note that is before elon musk took the company over. after a blistering expose in rolling stone magazine,
