across the country today for the unofficial holiday we know as black friday. the national retail federation says an estimate 166.3 million people are expected to shop between thanksgiving and cyber monday. that's about eight million more than last year. that includes more than 114 million people today alone. bradley blackburn is outside a best bay in woodland park, new jersey. i know it's early, but what's it looking like there? >> reporter: well, michael, right now it's just us. there was a time not too long ago when shoppers would have camped out here overnight. the store even has a fence set up to manage the crowds. but black friday has changed. the deals start earlier, the shopping season is longer. still more than a third of the entire country will shop today, and most of those people will visit a store in person. this is the day shoppers and retailers have been waiting for. >> black friday has been on my bucket list forever.

>> reporter: the national retail federation says a record 166 million people will shop this weekend with today being the most popular day followed by cyber monday. >> i usually like the old, traditional holiday, just one day and, you know, go splurge. >> reporter: of the 114 million people hunting for bargains this black friday, more than two-thirds say they'll go shopping at a brick and mortar store. >> the consumer likes to go into the stores. people like to see their clothes, try on sweaters, ask their friends if it looks good on them. maybe even get something to eat at the mall. >> reporter: but the pandemic pushed more people to purchase on line. >> i'd rather do on line. i think it's easier. >> reporter: many stores like target, macy's, and walmart were closed on thanksgiving, so today they'll offer deep discounts. >> the deals will be steeper >> reporter: now that pandemic-related supply chain issues have been resolved, retailers have more merchandise than space in warehouses. >> they're going to lower prices on everything to make room and space for the things that they

need to bring in for spring. >> reporter: while the stores may be packed and the discounts abundant today, many shoppers say they'll be spending less this holiday season. that's because due to inflation, nearly everything costs more. what is your favorite part of shopping? >> buying stuff. >> reporter: not enough to disrupt what has truly become an american tradition. the national retail federation says the top gifts this year are clothing, gift cards, and toys. about one in five shoppers has already completed most of their holiday buying. michael, i don't know about you, but i haven't even started my list. >> i'm way behind, but good to know that there's still a little bit of time.paw jers bradley, thanks. and before the black friday shopping, it was turkey time. americans gathered with friends and loved ones to chow down and watch the world-famous parade in new york city. elise preston has a look at all the festivities. >> reporter: the massive

balloons in the macy's thanksgiving day parade kicked off the holiday, baby yoda leading the way. >> we're so super excited. >> reporter: bluey, an australian cartoon character, was one of the new balloons this year. and plenty of old favorites made a return to the skies. >> i got my turkey hat. i got my turkey socks. >> reporter: for many it was the first big post-covid family event. >> it was kind of like hard during the pandemic, and now we get to enjoy it again. >> reporter: also enjoying the parade, the president and first lady who called in. >> we're just going to have dinner with the family. >> we're going to come up to nantucket. >> reporter: later the first couple spent time calling members of the military to thank them for their service. the tradition of giving on display near orlando, florida, where people recovering from hurricane ian were served a turkey dinner with all the fixings. for some, traditions include t d nville

nearly 55 million people were expected to travel this holiday. >> i was just over there repacking us up so that our bags were under weight for the flight. >> thanksgiving means to me happiness. >> reporter: at the end of the day, the holiday is about family. >> thanksgiving is all about caring. >> that was elise preston. in other news, we're learning more about the man accused of gunning down and killing six of his co-workers at a walmart in virginia. jeff pegues has the details. >> reporter: the search for answers in the mass shooting in chesapeake, virginia, continued as investigators combed through evidence at the walmart and the home of andre bing. police say 31-year-old bing, a store manager, opened fire in the walmart killing six and injuring seven before turning the gun on himself.neined n complaininout hijob and

rassment from his co-workers emplre police have not named the sixth victim since he is a minor. 22-year-old taneka johnson was described as one of the most loving people you could meet. >> i wish i could bring her back because she -- she didn't deserve that. >> reporter: ryan pendleton was the night custodian. his brother said that he was someone with a big heart for anybody that needed help. sarah stone walker was among the seven injured. a mother of three, she was an overnight stocker at the store and has worked there for two years. president biden called for stronger gun control measures, vowing to push for an assault weapons ban. >> the idea we still allow semiautomatic weapons to be purchased is sick. just sick. >> reporter: in colorado

springs, still reeling from a mass shooting at a gay nightclub there last week, a local church has stepped up to host a meal for those who would normally have gathered at club q for thanksgiving. restaurants have donated pies and food. >> no matter what your sexuality is, no matter what your religion is, what your politics are, you're a person, aou mattos.epre > mexin prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for an american woman in connection with the death of another american seen being beaten in a viral video. we want to warn you, this video is graphic. 25-year-old shanquilla robinson appears to be involved in altercation at a resort near cabo san lucas next month. prosecutors called one of robinson's six friends she was vacationing with the direct aggressor. the group left mexico after robinson was found dead.

the u.s. men's national team is back in action today in what may be our country's biggest match in world cup history. the u.s. takes on our rivals across the pond, england. after a draw against wales in our opening match, a win or draw against england is crucial if the u.s. is to move out of the group stage. the u.s. and england square off this afternoon at 2:00 eastern. meanwhile, an absolutely stunning bicycle kick goal from brazil's striker. he had two goals in brazil's 2-0 win over serbia. and another game, another record for cristiano ronaldo. with this penalty kick goal, he became the first man in history to score a goal in five different world cups. portugal won the opening match 3-2. back in the u.s., thanksgiving tradition played out on the football field. in the last of three games yesterday, the minnesota vikings beat the new england patriots 33-26. vikings quarterback kurt cousins threw for three touchdowns.

72% responded yes. musk reinstated donald trump's account last saturday after a similar poll. some critics say reinstating accounts that had been banned for such offenses as violent threats, harassment, and misinformation is dangerous. an apology to protesting iphone workers in china, and a deadly high-speed crash in chicago. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "chicago tribune" reports two people were killed and ten others hospitalized after a speeding stolen car crashed into seven other vehicles. authorities say the stolen car was traveling in the wrong direction wednesday night on the city's south side when it slammed into the other vehicles. the car burst into flames. two people inside were killed. police say a gun was found in the back of the vehicle. "reuters" says the european union parliament is calling on fifa to help compensate the families of migrant workers who

with winter around the corner, there's concern about a so-called tripledemic. manuel bojorquez explains. >> reporter: as viral infections continue to rise nationwide, people like sherry wharton are vocal about vaccines. on facebook, she wrote, "i hesitated getting my covid shot this time, but i thought of our dear friends we lost before vaccines were available." >> i don't want to lose any of my children or my grandchildren or my friends. >> reporter: but the message is lost on even some of her loved ones. what's this conversation going to be like at the thanksgiving dinner? >> my children are all for, very outspoken. i have one in particular that will not take the booster, but that's his choice. and that's just how i have to leave it.

>> reporter: doctors are concerned holiday gatherings may accelerate a so-called tripledemic, a convergence of flu, rsv, and covid cases. while covid cases declined slightly from the previous week, hospitalizations for the flu are at the highest level for this time of year in more than a decade. at least 36 states are seeing elevated levels of rsv cases compared to this time last year. dr. eileen marty, of florida international university, says not to take the threat of illness lightly. >> whether it's a child, elderly person, if they've had covid, the risk of a worse outcome from the other viruses has increased. >> reporter: still, there are things everyone can do. hand sanitizer, wash your hands. if you're feeling ill, separate yourself or wear a mask? >> it's common sense. >> reporter: despite health campaigns urging vaccination just over a quarter of adults have gotten their flu shot.
