inflation, owners say the support means everything during these times. this small business saturday was the boost many needed, especially as we head into the most critical time of year for retailers. >> honestly from a morale point of view it's a big deal. it really gives us energy for the rest of the holidays. >> small independent stores really add to the flavor of the community. >> while most stores in the bay area have seen a boost in business this busy weekend, not everyone has been so lucky. >> betty yu caught up with a store owner who says things are slower than ever. >> reporter: ambience clothing boutique has been here nor union street for more than 20 years, and the manager says this small business saturday might be the slowest one yet. gwen has worked at ambience clothing store for several years. she said even a small business saturday 20% off

small? >> reporter: damian porter came in looking for a great gatsby inspired outfit for his fianc÷e. >> i love unique gifts. >> reporter: a new survey from bank rate shows even more americans shop on saturday than black friday. but the majority still buy from large businesses. gwen is staying optimistic, despite the disappointing thanksgiving weekend turnout. >> it's ambience. we made it through the pandemic, and we'll figure it out to bring people in. >> reporter: in san francisco, betty yu, kpix 5. >> despite the slow business they saw today, the national retail federation expects 166 million americans will take advantage of the deals this weekend. that means on the whole, people are still spending a lot of money this holiday season despite high inflation. retail sales were up about a percentage point in the past month, and more people are expected to spend money today

than black friday. it's not all good news. as more americans will be using their credit cards to cover expenses, economists say that u.s. credit card debt is growing at the fastest pace that it's been in over 20 years. so is adding to that debt ever a good plan? >> absolutely not. if you have to put it on a credit card that you can't pay off the next billing cycle, then you should not be buying that gift. >> more and more people are also using buy now, pay later services like afterpay and affirm for holiday shopping, but experts say it's easy to miss payments and be hit with fees. the the founder of san francisco-based tummo credit has this message for shoppers. >> when you're tempted to click the buy now, pay later button, always think that button exists to incentivize the merchant. the companies get a huge cut from the sale they're getting from you. they're not on your

side. they're not incentivized for your personal help. so always feel like they're against you. outgoing local mayor libby schaff released her plan to spur business. that includes spending more than a quarter million dollars on increased security and street ambassadors at locations like piedmont, jack london square, and the lake shore. so far it appears to be working. on black friday, we saw decent sized crowds out again. and no reports of any smash and grabs or shoplifting like we saw at this time last year into well, protesters with that ongoing university of california academic workers strike took their protest to the cal football game. a ph.d student and community ally

dressed up like referees. they climbed flag poles and put on a banner saying flag on the play, unfair labor practice. they were arrested by university police after the game. the protests have been going on for two weeks now. and the case of the puzzling powder in martinez. much of downtown was blanketed in the fine dust. no one is sure where the powder came from. some point to the local refineries. >> i noticed this morning walking up perry street, and there was dust all over people's windshields. i think it's coming from the refinery. they have to deal with it. >> the martinez refining company says it has taken samples of the dust to test it and identify what it is. they'll also investigate who's at fault and how it happened. it's that time of year in san francisco. the fairmont's

heads up if you're hitting the road this weekend. the chp is having one of its maximum enforcement weekends. that sounds ominous. they're expecting to be busy as aaa predicts this to be the third busiest travel weekend since they started keeping track in the year 2000. they expect some 50 million americans to hit the road this weekend alone. last year, 42 people died on california roadways over the thanksgiving weekend. if you're traveling through the sky for the holidays, it's been pretty smooth so far. there have been very few delays or cancellations at bay area airports this weekend. as we take a live look at sfo tonight, fewer than ten flights have been delayed since thanksgiving. none have been canceled. we're seeing similar numbers from oakland and san jose as well. but the news isn't as good

elsewhere. more than 2300 flights were delayed across the u.s. the biggest delays were in dallas and houston. they're dealing with storms and severe weather that's moving east across the southern u.s. and all this travel has public health officials bracing for what could become yet another post-thanksgiving surge of flu and covid cases. >> here's what doctors say to do if you start feeling sick. >> reporter: public health officials stress the importance of testing at the first sign of feeling sick. there are different treatments for covid and the flu which if taken early can prevent serious illness. >> if you're eligible, older, immune compromised. but tamiflu works for all age groups. >> reporter: they warned about a potential perfect storm of three restaurateur viruses, covid, flu, and rsv. in fact, the strain on the hospital

system and pediatric wards in particular was so great that health care workers set up emergency tents outside the hospital as a precaution. >> i think if you look at all around the country, they're telling a similar story of just at the limit of capacity for hospitals. >> reporter: and even if you manage to make it through the thanksgiving holiday without getting sick, doctors are still urging the public to get a flu shot and vaccine booster. parents of young children will have to remain vigilant for rsv as there's no vaccine yet. >> watch out if for difficulty breathing. that might have be wheezing or use of extra muscles to breathe. and number two, dehydration, fatigue, listlessness. >> reporter: there's still a long way to go in the cold and flu season. doctors say they haven't needed the extra tents outside the hospital yet and

we color code it, show what the temperatures look like. into monday, you can just see the colder air pouring our way. you'll see that factor into the forecast. it also gets a little windy on monday morning when that happens: monday afternoon feels different. it's going to be cooler, a bit breezy, and to top it off, even though we're not getting rain here, there will be a little bit of snow in the sierra from that same system monday night into tuesday. it's like an inch or two. just enough to be nuisance snow. the real issue is when the winter air gets here for the morning lows. tuesday and wednesday the valleys go down into the upper 20s. wednesday, the coldest morning, the north bay will always be the coldest spot. there's our 29 on wednesday morning in santa rosa. we're not all getting that old. it's going to be cold

for everybody, just not that cold. oakland only going to 40. but mid to upper 30s for just about everywhere else. so when is the next chance of rain? well, if you believe the longer range forecast model, there's still a good looking storm in the forecast models. we've been here before. let's give this another 36 hours before we start getting our hopes too high on this notion. but it's nice to see it. and there's more coming after that. so much more on that in the first alert forecast. but look at the cool down. whether we get the rain or not, we're getting the cool down. feels different next week. afternoons only in the upper 50s. sounds dramatic, but only in comparison to where we've been. it's the morning lows that really make that
