plane tangled in the lines in gaithersburg, maryland. dangling about 100 feet above ground. it took hours, but crews were able to safely rescue two people on board. residents describe hearing the crash. >> we seen the flash of light from the bedroom window. i thought it was lightning and then heard the pow. we came out here and seen the plane. >> officials say the two people on board suffered serious injuries. there's no word on what caused the crash. the incident knocked out power to thousands of people, and some schools are even closed today because of it. sunday was the final day of the thanksgiving holiday travel rush and one of the busiest days as people headed home from their destinations. it was not an easy road. flight aware says there were more than 6,400 delays and 177 cancelations at our nation's airports. that was yesterday alone, and part of it was because of a nasty weather system that hit the northeast. naomi ruchim joins us from new york with more. good morning.

>> reporter: hey, bradley. good morning to you. it's quiet here now, but wow, if you were traveling this weekend you know it was definitely a busy one. on saturday alone the tsa screened more than two million people, and it seems folks are back to their pre-pandemic travel habits. severe weather was primarily to blame for more than 6,000 flight delays and cancelations nationwide yesterday alone according to flight aware. new york, chicago, and washington, d.c., were among the worst hit. >> every single flight has been delayed. >> the weather is not the best, but we're working with it. >> reporter: andy tembon said his trip from dallas to spend thanksgiving with relatives in the d.c. region was more expensive than previous years. he calls it a new normal. >> the price of traveling and going to everything is definitely worth the family time. >> reporter: with a song and a few fist bumps, one airport

worker in philadelphia kept passengers entertained as they passed through long security lines. >> the flight doesn't board for another hour but had to be extra early just in case. >> reporter: aaa expects when the numbers are tallied that this year's travel will be on par with pre-pandemic levels with more than 54 million americans trekking more than 50 miles away from home. the bulk of travelers hit packed roads. >> we make this trip once a year for thanksgiving. it's typical to see this every time. >> reporter: aaa expects travel to continue into this week with more americans working remotely. and according to aaa, this was the third busiest road travel thanksgiving ever, bradley. it seems because so many people are now working from home, they have the flexibility to spread it out, so anticipate some traffic even in the days or perhaps weeks to come. bradley? >> hopefully it's an easier path

for stragglers. naomi ruchim in new york, thanks. for more on today's weather and storm systems brewing later in the week, here's paul goodloe of the weather channel. >> reporter: rain causing problems, starts to exit for monday. if you're not traveling until monday, looking pretty good. maybe lingering scattered showers. now the northwest more snow for your monday. watching that system because that is going to bring severe weather including tornado risks going sky high as we head toward tuesday and wednesday across parts of the lower mississippi valley. east texas, louisiana, arkansas, mississippi in the zone for severe weather including tornadoes but also snow. maybe even the twin cities close to maybe three to six inches of snow. heavier snow in the western great lakes and mountains getting clobbered. the concern here is including tornadoes on tuesday evening, tuesday overnight across parts of the lower mississippi river valley. >> thanks to paul goodloe with the weather channel. today the man accused of gunning down ten people at a

buffalo, new york, grocery store is expected in court. payton gendron is expected to plead guilty to state charges. his hearing was supposed to take place last week but was delayed because of that historic snowstorm in upstate new york. the 19-year-old allegedly shot and killed ten people at a tops supermarket in may. officials have said he was motivated by hate, and the majority of his victims were black. the wave of mass shootings this year from buffalo to uvalde and most recently the colorado lgbtq club is putting the fight over gun control back at center stage in washington. nancy cordes has more on the political battle over curbing gun violence. that is what we argued the time is right for a return to the assault weapons ban, but even the biggest gun safety advocates admitted the numbers just aren't there. >> does it have 60 votes in the senate right now? probably not. >> reporter: republicans who

take over the house in january argued there are enough gun laws already on the books. >> passing a bill would simply end gun violence, i think you would have overwhelming support in congress for that. >> it saves lives. >> reporter: here on nantucket, president biden lamented the fact that some laws just weren't enforced in recent mass shootings including a red flag law that could have kept guns out of the hands of a man who killed five and injured dozens more at an lgbtq nightclub in colorado springs last week. >> in this case, it wasn't pursued by the local sheriff agency. >> reporter: on "face the nation," colorado governor jared polis said he wants to see his state's red flag law expanded so local prosecutors as well as family members can petition to have guns confiscated from troubled individuals. >> we also need to make sure that we publicize the law and make sure that the tools are in people's hands when they need it. >> nancy cordes reporting for us. overseas now to china where

protesters are calling for president xi jinping to resign over the strict covid policies still in place in that country. elizabeth palmer has a look at the new clashes between police and protesters. >> reporter: he shouts what until now would have been unthinkable. down with xi jinping, down with the communist party. the protests in shanghai and other cities were sparked by a tragedy -- thousands of miles away in western china. ten people burned to death in an apartment fire last week. a furious crowd gathered around local government offices convinced that covid restrictions had stopped the fire engines from reaching the blaze. authorities denied that, but the story brought people into the streets in sympathy with the victims and in anger with the government's heavy-handed covid rules.

at the vigil in shanghai they held up blank sheets of paper to show how critics of the government are routinely silenced. ♪ and by sunday night, another vigil under way in beijing had spun off even more protests. some of the pushback against zero covid may have its roots in chinese crowds at the world cup, unmasked and unafraid. by today, it appeared state tv was censoring images of those bare-faced spectators. all part of xi jinping's plan to double down on his zero-covid policy. and the sight of citizens chanting "lift lockdowns" isn't likely to change his mind. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, tokyo. now we'll turn to a shocking development in those protests against iran's government. you're looking at the niece of iran's supreme leader calling on countries around the world to

cut ties with her uncle's government. reports now say that she has been arrested. there have been widespread protests in the middle eastern nation over human rights abuses sparked by the death of a young woman while in the custody of iran's so-called morality police. those protests have sparked another controversy, this time at the world cup. this image was posted on social media by the u.s. soccer federation. it removed the symbol in the middle of iran's flag which is associated with iran's clerical leaders. the federation later took it down but said it was meant to show support to protesters. iran is calling on the u.s. to be suspended over the move. meanwhile, there's been another huge upset at the world cup. morocco beat the world's number-two ranked team belgium. it was 2-0. people did not react well. the loss led to riots in parts of brussels. police had to use waters cannons and teargas to try to get things under control. coming up, a dramatic rescue.

jr. was removed from a plane in miami before takeoff sunday. of consciousness prior to departure and refused to leave on his own. the crew feared his condition could worsen and called police and paramedics. his attorney said he had been sleeping and blamed the incident on a quote, overzealous flight attendant. npr says a cruise ship passenger was rescued by the coast guard after spending hours in the gulf of mexico. the 28-year-old man was spotted in the water and lifted to safety by a helicopter crew on thursday. he was located about 20 miles south of the louisiana coast. the man had fallen overboard from the carnival ship thursday evening. the coast guard said he was suffering from mild hypothermia, shock, and dehydration. "the atlanta journal constitution" says after the shooting death of a 12-year-old boy, officials are renewed calls to fight gun violence. police say shots were fired saturday night during a dispute

week in a row now raking in about $46 million just this weekend. now to a major warning for parents. thousands of toddler cups have been recalled over fears of lead poisoning. courtney kealy has today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: the markets resumed trading today. futures slipped sunday after gains were made during the shortened holiday week. on friday the dow closed up 152 points. the nasdaq fell 59. the s&p 500 dropped one point. shoppers in the u.s. went shopping for bargains this weekend and continues with cyber monday. as many as 64 million people may shop today. adobe estimates more than $11 billion may be spent today. parents, listen up -- more than 10,000 of these toddler bottles and cups are being recalled over lead poisoning fears. the base of the bottles and cups manufactured by green sprouts can come off and expose lead, according to the u.s. consumer product safety commission. no injuries have been reported.
