now at 11:00, oakland's police chief claims his plan to crack down woing, and doubliow on go people are doing their shopping though. that is a part of it. betty yu is here. she talked to the chief tonight about his big plans. betty? >> reporter: the chief says right now, he is just laser focused on addressing homicides and shootings in oakland. also, i spoke to an owner of a local shop tonight who has been targeted by burglars repeatedly. he says more officers are needed in this area. in the overnight hours, a burglar broke the glass panel at quickly on lake shore avenue earlier this month. the thief stole a change box and emptied the cash register. it's the third time in the last year crooks hit this boba tea shop.

bill knew nguyin prepares drinks for customers. >> reporter: on monday, oakland's police chief announced isol ctit's a part of department's holiday strategy. the initiative started in september after the city experienced its deadliest month all year. >> it's a pretty good idea, i'm not going to lie. i think it is more important to have a safer community and a place where no one gets stabbed once in a while. >> reporter: bill said just last week, an officer came by looking for any witnesses to a stabbing that happened right outside in broad daylight. the chief says since opd beefed up its presence, homicide has dropped nearly 50% in the last two months. >> really focusing on

individuals that we know are involved in group and gang violence. being really focused on those that are carrying weapons. but also enhancing our traffic stops, bringing our motor teams out to make more traffic stops. >> have a nice day. >> reporter: bill hopes the enforcement will make the lake shore area more inviting for customers. quickly also hopes opd's plan will help drop down property crimes and reduce quality of life issues. for example, this is a staircase workers have to wait through to get to their cars in a nearby parking lot. in the meantime. >> i need to be a little more cautious about going and walking around even in broad daylight. >> well already this year, opd said its officers recovered 120 more firearms than it did in all of last year. and when we look at 2022, the total number of homicides is down about 15% compared to this time last year. sara? >> so betty, when it comes to the plan, we're hearing more officers, more resources, more

of a police presence. i know like a lot of other police departments in the bay area and around the country, oakland has had its issues with staffing in the past. so how are they doing with that, given what they want to do here? >> reporter: i asked the chief about that. just to give you a sense of where we are, pre-pandemic the department had 337 officers. now they're back up to just over 700 just today. opd welcomed 28 new recruits. so the chief believes steadily they will add more and more officers. sara? >> all right, betty, thank you so much. you know, san francisco has been trying to crack down on crime too especially in union square during busy holiday shopping. the mayor has touted a program that adds more police and community ambassadors to the streets to try to stop major retail theft. well, it seemed like it was working and then came saturday. armed men robbed the camera store on bush street taking nearly $200,000 worth of merchandise. this

happened in broad daylight near union square around 1:00 in the afternoon. the store has had to close down for now. we've reached out to the mayor's office for a response. they wrote in part, "our work to keep union square a safe and clean place for residents, workers, and visitors continues." the mayor remains focused on safety as a top priority. a vital part of the city's economic recovery and vibrancy. senate leaders are set to vote tomorrow on a bill to protect same-sex and interracial marriage, but the clock is ticking. democrats want to pass it, while they still hold the majority in both chambers. it would ensure marriages are protected by federal law. the house still needs to vote on it before the president can sign it. now this all comes as a far-right republican lawmaker who was kicked off twitter is back online now and slinging slurs at the gay community. the line of attack focuses on a derogatory term from the past that's making a resurgence. that slur is aimed at a san francisco lawmaker.

>> reporter: sara, the man under fire is state senator scott wiener. he says this one has him particularly worried. >> she has a huge following with some very unhinged people in her orbit. >> reporter: state senator scott wiener says he is watching his back after georgia representative, marjorie taylor greene, hurled an anti-lgbtq slur at him on twitter calling him a groomer. >> when someone like marjorie taylor greene attacks me and in this case calling me a "communist groomer," yeah, i do have to be more vigilant. >> reporter: the term groomer, which refers to adults who build relationships with children in an effort to abuse them has been used by some in the far right against lgbtq people trading on an old stereotype that gays are predators. it all started a week ago when wiener tweeted the word groomer is

categorically an anti-lgbtq hate word. that's when greene, who had just been allowed back on twitter by elon musk, attacked him. wiener says since greene's tweet, he's been inundated with attacks on social media calling him a pedophile. his biggest worry is it could encourage some on the fringe to hurt him or others in the lgbtq community. >> hate rhetoric, particularly coming from people in power, directly leads to violence. >> reporter: the slur came just days after a mass shooting at a colorado springs gay club that killed five people and injured many more. now some in the lgbtq community are worried greene's words could inspire yet more assaults. >> being in a place that's very gay, we kind of are reminded we have to constantly be on alert. we are never really safe. >> reporter: susan ford is the executive director of san francisco pride. she says in

the last few days, her office has been flooded with calls from people worried about their safety. >> the tone of people is, you know, discouraged, hurting. it's terrible. >> hi, it's scott. >> reporter: perhaps the only good thing to come out of all of this, wiener says, is watching his community come together. >> we know we k up for oursves and be united, and we're doing it. >> reporter: senator wiener is outraged. he believes musk is exerting a toxic influence, not just on twitter, but on society as a whole. sara? the iranian men's soccer team is facing a lot more than just the u.s. team tomorrow. cnn is reporting the revolutionary guard is actually threatening to lock up and torture the players' families if the players don't sing the national anthem before tomorrow's game. you might remember they refused to sing the anthem during their opening match of the world cup. players and fans have been using the

world cup to call attention to ongoing human rights protests in the country. nearly 400 people have been killed, 18,000 arrested in iran. and fans in doha have been chanting and wearing protest slogans. now u.s. soccs drawn into controversy when it posted this on social media. iran's flag without the emblem of the islamic republic. u.s. soccer has since deleted those posts, but their intention was to show pport for n in iran. so vern is here. obviously a lot to talk about beyond soccer? >> yeah, let me make sure i get this right. you're talking about a soccer coach and a 23-year-old kid on the firing line. my oldest son is 23, and they've got to answer these kind of questions? >> they had to answer these questions in a news conference. they had to answer for all kinds of things not related to soccer. it was foreign policy. it was the american economy. even racism in the u.s. and here is what adams, the team captain had to say when he was grilled by a member of the

iranian media. >> there is discrimination everywhere you go. you know, one thing that i've learned especially from living abroad in the past years and having to fit in different cultures and kind of assimilate to different cultures is that in the u.s., we're continuing to make progress every single day. >> okay, so that news conference in full got a ton of attention because of what else was talked about. and obviously what's happening in iran. people are going to be watching the match because of the context, but also for what's going to be going on in the pitch. >> the game. >> isn't that the star of the whole thing? >> the game. yeah, on top of the political stakes of the match, there is a lot on the line for both countries in this game. here is what you need to know, okay? it's the final group stage game. both teams have a chance to advance to the knockout stage. now for the u.s., it's simple. they must beat iran and move on. the united states would be

kids are breaking into nancy pelosi's san francisco home has a new judge overseeing his case. david depape was not in court today, but hearing was set for december 14. the previous judge on the case said she worked with pelosi's daughter, christine, in the 90s in the san francisco city attorney's office. depape already pleaded not guilty to murder and several other charges. elon musk taking aim at apple. musk claims apple stopped most of its advertising on twitter, accusing it of engaging in censorship rather. the washington post reports apple was twitter's single largest advertiser in the first quarter of this year. it's easy to armchair psychology here and say yeah, it feels like he is picking a fight with apple, so he can claim they're retaliating and

take it out of the app store. but honestly it's hard to tell what he's thinking. >> twitter, like many other tech companies, is already blaming the loss of advertisers. we reached out to apple for a response and have not heard back yet. today googleand ihwill y mi reaching a settlement with the federal trade commission including california. the lawsuit claimed google would pay iheart media personalities to advertise their google pixel 4 smartphone without ever getting the phone. and aside from financial penalties, the two companies are now required to submit reports and maintain records for tracking uses. all right, check this out. this is thermal imaging showing an eruption last night from the mauna loa volcano on hawaii's big island. interesting look there, paul? >> yeah, it's impressive. just the amount of power that's contained within just below our feet within the earth's crust. this is going to be a large

event obviously. the world's most powerful active volcano and it will be roughing for a little while. a well-absorbed volcano. a lot of the scientists are studying it. hopefully we won't see any evacuations, any property damages as a result of this, but yeah. >> the images are world. >> yeah, that is melted rock. and that's up into the air like that. that is just so impressive. we will talk a little bit about what's happening weather wise around here and we will take you into the rest of the workweek into the weekend as well. we do have some rain chances down the line in the forecast. in the short term, that was breezy today. the wind brought in cooler temperatures from the north, sticking around the next couple of days. but in terms of the rain chance, wait for a couple of days to arrive. we will check out clear skies tonight, chilly tomorrow morning with some high clouds tomorrow, filtering the sun, not blocking it. and you will be seeing increase in cloud covers throughout the day on wednesday. but the rain chances are going to remain very low on wednesday. maybe a couple of sprinkles for parts of the north bay. but the bulk of the

moisture is still to the north by the time the sun goes down in the afternoon. showers will move in on wednesday night into early thursday. plenty ahead, be ready for a wet, just generally sloppy morning commute on thursday. some of the heaviest rain will be moving in at that point along with some of the strongest winds. this band of rain that will move through will drop quite a bit of rain in a short amount of time with some localized street flooding, some flooded intersections on the side of the road. be prepared for all of that. be flexible if you have the option to work from home on thursday. i would exercise that option because the roads will be messy even for the evening commute. the rain moving out by the afternoon. but the roads will still be wet. how much rain are we talking about? this model indicating quite a bit. an inch or two of total rainfall. it might be an overestimate. even if we pick up half of these amounts, that will be a nice rain especially with more rain down the line of the forecast by the weekend. another round of much needed rainfall for the bay area. probably late saturday into sunday. this will be a snow maker for the high

sierra. we are talking about anywhere from lake tahoe to potentially three feet of snow. you can go up in elevations, squeeze out more moisture. this will be a beneficial event for the ski resorts up there. we will keep you updated as they get closer. temperatures are dropping down into the 40s already except oakland holding on to 50 degrees. but we will end up in the 30s inland by early tomorrow morning with the low 40s around the bay. a chilly start to the day. temperatures will warm up within a few degrees of what's normal. mid-50s along the coast. everybody else is a mix of upper 50s and the low 60s. but the warmest spots on the map around fairfield and far inland of the forth bay, barely reaching out to 60 degrees. most of these numbers are running below normal for late november with very similar temperatures in the forecast for wednesday ahead of that next chance of rain. thursday our alert day because of the combination of heavy rain and wind likely around the morning commute on thursday and maybe even lingering for the afternoon commute. the next round of showers, late saturday into sunday and the timing on
